Neopedia : Marvellous Kau Potion

"Oh dear, oh dear, I'll never get this done in time!" Kauvara muttered to herself as she flung open the doors to a pantry full of different ingredients. "Let's see, I'll need some of this... oh, and definitely this," she said, pulling several glass vials from the cabinet. With an armful of different chemicals and ingredients, she hurried over to her laboratory set.

Carefully, Kauvara placed the vials one-by-one onto the counter. However, she didn't notice the final small vial that was slowly coming free from her grasp. By the time she felt it slip past her elbow, it was too late. A green cloud of smoke exploded from where the vial had hit the floor. Kauvara coughed as the acidic smoke stung her eyes and throat. She ran across the floor, trying to escape the gas, when she ran headlong into something large, and was thrown back against the floor. Peering through her stinging eyes, she saw something that was quite unfamiliar.

A strange, curving wall lay before her; it was black, and nearly as tall as herself. Straining to look over, Kauvara saw that the top was circular and inclining, and had a black pole rising from the center. A strange yellow glow reflected off the top of the metallic surface. Looking up, she saw (far above) the pole leading up to form a smaller base, and the unmistakable flickering of a candle from on top it.

Panic gripped her as she realized she was looking up at the candle stand in her laboratory. The magical shopkeeper whirled around, trying to make sense of her surroundings. Sure enough, behind her, across the wood that now looked ridged, was the shattered vial... however, it was now nearly as big as her!

Clamouring across the jagged floor, Kauvara came to the area below the cabinet where she kept all of her different vials. There, on the top shelf (which seemed to be at an impossible height above her) was the vial of red fluid she would need to return herself to the proper height.

Kauvara looked around. Nothing was leaning against the wall for her to climb up (besides, Kaus are terrible climbers, anyway). She looked up, desperate to figure out a way to get to the antidote. Her heart fell as Kauvara realised that she'd have to crawl right up the wall if she had any hope of getting to that vial.

Nearly giving up all hope, she sat roughly on the dusty floorboards, then looked across the room to her locked door. Kauvara had told everyone not to bother her, as she was busy making a very special potion for Kau Day (her favourite holiday). Help would not come through that door, and she didn't dare try squeezing under it, for fear of being trampled in her own shop. Once again, she stared at the potion far above her, as if her own will could bring it down.

Her focus was interrupted, however, when she heard a small scuttling that came from her left. Startled, the miniature Kau leapt up and peered into the darkness. From underneath a dusty rag on the floor came a rather curious Mootix.

Quietly, the bug skittered across the floor towards a horrified Kauvara, who unconsciously began backing away.

The Mootix scuttled right up to her and said, "Hi."

Kauvara blinked in astonishment. "I never knew Mootix could speak."

"Of course we can speak; you big folk just don't hear too well," the Mootix said simply. "Speaking of which... why aren't you big? I live over there," the Mootix said, pointing one of its legs to a dusty corner. "I see you in here all the time, but usually you are much, much bigger."

Kauvara quickly explained her situation to the Mootix, who seemed quite friendly. Upon hearing her plight, the fellow was determined to help Kauvara. "You always drop crumbs on the floor for me to eat, so I'll help you!" he said enthusiastically.

Kauvara was about to say that she didn't drop the crumbs intentionally, but thought better of it as she climbed onto the back of the Mootix, who scuttled over to the wall. Slowly he began climbing up the wall, using his sticky feet, while Kauvara held on for dear life.

After what seemed to be quite some time, the shelf was finally in sight. Carefully, the exhausted Mootix brought Kauvara over to the large red vial that contained the antidote. She clumsily slid off the back of her new friend, then turned towards him. "Thank you for all your help," she said gratefully.

"No problem!" the Mootix said. "Just try not to step on me when you get big again!"

Kauvara laughed and smiled widely. "I can promise you that one."

Kauvara then hurried over to the vial, which luckily had been knocked over during her earlier rush. She thanked her friend one last time, then dipped a hoof in the red liquid. Her hoof immediately began to expand, and the Kau leapt off the shelf, crashing to the floor in a gigantic cloud of dust.

Kauvara shook herself off and looked around the laboratory. All was well again, and seemed the appropriate size. Before getting back to work on her potion, however, she picked up a potted plant from a table. Holding it up to the cupboard (so that its leaves rested on the shelf by the red vial) Kauvara squinted, then smiled as she saw the little Mootix crawl onto a leaf. The two friends might not have been able to talk anymore, but she would never forget his kindness and willingness to help. The shopkeeper then gently set the plant in the dark corner where the Mootix had made his home.

In the end, the grand potion was ready for its debut on Kau Day, without a moment to spare. All thanks to one little Mootix, who was now spoiled daily with breadcrumbs.
