A loud shrill screech filled the air; a strident cry cutting into the
depths of the night. A dark figure lay motionless; deathly still upon
the thick grass. Lightning cracked across the darkened sky as a torrent
of rain broke free and fell from the heavens. Rain soaked through the
feathers of the demented creature. An ebony Eyrie. From its parted beak,
came the words, "You were right...I am what you said I was..."
***
Kakosenas. Her name given to her at her hatching. A name
that determined her fate. Kakos, meaning evil, and Enas, meaning one.
It was no surprise that this young one was off to a rough start. Upon
her arrival to the world, Kakosenas slaughtered her two nestmates, who
would have become her brother and sister. Her parents grieved, and upon
finding out that Kakos was the culprit of the destruction, they disowned
her.
Kakos adopted the ways of the forest, becoming more independent
and self-reliant with each passing day. Such solitude led her to become
aloof and untrusting to outsiders. What once was a young hatchling was
now a full grown Eyrie. A small figure, lightweight in size but big in
stature. A lethal curved beak adorned her small features, along with sharp
talons on each foot.
Her wings, fairly large in size weren't all that much to
look at, but did provide easy access to the sky world above. Largely set
red-hued oculars peered out from a solemn and sometimes malicious face.
Perhaps the most alarming and dominating feature on Kakosenas was her
unusually coloured fur and feathers. Instead of being brightly coloured
and fancy like most, she was covered from head to toe in dark ebony. Just
her colouring reflected upon her foul nature towards others.
Maybe it was fate, or some other powerful force. Something
however did lead Kakos into venturing into the dark regions of the Haunted
Forest. Perhaps just the idea of finding others just like herself, or
perhaps it was just her own curiosity. Whatever the reason was, this was
only the beginning.
Kakosenas slunk through the forest furtively, getting the
strangest sensation that the gnarled trees were reaching out to her, attempting
to pull her into their grasps. She chuckled lightly at the thought, moving
trees? Such foolishness. She continued on, pushing her way through the
undergrowth, dark wings folded across her back. Thorny bushes left deep
scratches on her flanks as she kept up her even pace, though she paid
them no heed. Deeper into the forest she traveled.
Silence fell.
To be continued...
