It was nothing dangerous at all. Or was it? Nor me nor Abby
had ever seen a similar thing in our lives. A little fish peeped up at the surface.
Shortly after, seven more appeared. It was not a Koi, or a Flotsam, Jetsam, or
water petpet. Abby asked Bubblin' Barti what those fish- uhh, things were.
"What?!" exclaimed Bubblin' Barti. "Ya mean
ye lil' mateys hve never seen a Squiggelyjig?!"
"A what?!" said Abby.
"A Squiggelyjig!" shouted Bubblin' Barti. "Those
lil' mateys ar' used for two lil' uses: makin' music n' eatin' Fishfofs."
I looked back at the water. Eight Squiggelyjigs
were swimming at the surface. Bubblin' Barti clapped his hands eight times.
Each time he clapped, one of the Squiggelyjigs flipped upside down so only the
tail was showing. Bubblin' Barti clapped his hands again and the strange fish
began to play a lovely tune with their tails.
"This is one lil' use for the Squiggelyjigs,"
said Bubblin' Barti. "Those lil' mateys eat Fishfofs. I'll let ye take them,
but ye can't get to that lil' island from here!"
"Why not?" asked Abby.
"Ya hafta go there from Badbone Beach. Beware,
ye mateys. To get to Badbone beach, ye must cross the Trail o' Doom!"
I reached into my bag. I pulled the book Maps
of Neopia. Yes, I am a big bookworm. I searched through the book, and I finally
found a map of Krawk Island. There was a faint line marked Trail of Doom in
the back, on the right side. It was strange, for I had never noticed it before.
But, ignoring that, Abby and I began our journey to get the Squiggeleyjigs to
the island.
When we were half way to the Trail of Doom,
Abby suddenly stopped.
"What is it?" I asked.
"If Squiggelyjigs only eat Fishfofs, then what
will eat the Gulwags?" said Abby.
I thought a little bit. Shortly, I realized
that Abby was right. How would he get rid of the Gulwags if the Sqigelyjigs
won't eat them? I deeply wished that Bubblin' Barti was with us. He could definitely
tell us what ate Gulwags.
I looked around Krawk Island. Straight ahead,
I saw an old Krawk pick up a fifty Dubloon coin of the ground. "Me really not
need this," the Krawk said, walking up to us while staring at the coin. "Here
ye go," he said, handing us the coin. "Use it wisely." The Krawk then hurried
away.
"He said to use it wisely," said Abby. "I wonder
if there's a place where you can buy Gulwag-eaters or something."
"Let's try the petpet shop," I said. "I bet
that they have something that eats Gulwags."
We proceeded towards the petpet shop. The normal
shopkeeper was not there. Instead there was a female Pirate Aisha. She sang
a song about how great petpets were and how we could never live without them.
I noticed that she was only singing about pirate petpets, and when she finally
did sing about something else, she put it in a bad way. When her extremely long
song was over, Abby asked the Aisha if there was a petpet who ate Gulwags.
"Why, yes me matey," said the Aisha. "Me lil'
Snarhook. Get 'im for a wee three Dubloons."
Abby put the fifty Dubloon coin on the counter.
The Aisha gave her forty-seven Dubloons change and a Snarhook. Both of us left
the petpet shop to search for the Trail of Doom.
After three full hours of walking, we arrived
at a dark, spooky trail. I knew instantly that it must have been the Trail of
Doom. "I-I-I'm s-scared," I stuttered.
"No worries, Flopilda," said Abby. "We'll be
f-f-fine."
I noticed that Abby was a bit scared too. But,
if we wanted to save the island, we had to travel along the trail. Facing our
fears, we began to walk.
"This trail is long," I said after an hour of
walking. "Exactly how long is it?"
"You're the one with the map," said Abby. "Have
a look at it."
I took out my map. We had only traveled a third
of the way. We still had to walk for two whole hours. It was a good thing that
Abby did all the walking… I mean, bouncing while I got to sit in her backpack
all day!
***
After another hour, we arrived at a point where the trail was wider. "This
is a good place to stop and take a rest," said Abby.
We took a rest. I pulled snacks out of Abby's
backpack. All she had was a large bag of Lost Desert fruit, but I didn't care.
It was good even though it was cheap.
"Ugh! My owner snuck meat in here again!" shouted
Abby. "Doesn't she know that I'm a vegetarian!?" She threw her Buzz Sandwich
to the other side of the trail. Suddenly, I spotted a small character eating
the sandwich. The figure came a bit closer. It was Lequi, the Aisha from the
petpet shop. She had a grin of evil on her face.
"Ha ha!" Lequi laughed evilly. "Now that I've
kidnapped the petpet shopkeeper, I will attack this wimpy Meerca and her stupid
Pfish! Ha ha ha!"
Abby saw that Lequi had only eaten half the
sandwich. Soon, another figure appeared and was eating the other half. It was
Goaden, the old Krawk who handed us the fifty Dubloon coin. He too was plotting
to attack us.
"Excuse me, but why do you wish to be cruel
to us," said Abby. "At first you were honest to us."
"When me said to use the coin wisely, I was
hoping that ye would not use it to save that island!" shouted Goaden.
"When I gave ye that Snarhook, I thought ye
were tryin' to clear up that Gulwag overload at ye south point," said Lequi.
She then shouted "Goopolo!" and a monster appeared from the trees.
"Run!!" Abby shouted. The two of ran from Lequi,
Goaden, and Goopolo, who were all chasing us. As we were going so fast, it only
took us one half-hour to reach the end of the Trail of Doom. "Where are we?"
I asked.
"I think we're at Badbone Beach," said Abby.
"Let's grab that boat over there. I don't think that any of those three can
swim."
We jumped in the boat and paddled away. Abby
was right that none of them could swim. They all drowned when they first jumped
in the water. After an entire night of paddling, we reached the island. Abby
claimed it A-F Island, which stood for Abby and Flopilda. We then built a shelter
and stayed for the night! It was great, for the Squigellyjigs ate all the Fishfofs,
and the Snarhooks ate all the gulwags.
"So did you like your first adventure?" I said
as we crawled into bed.
"Oh, it was okay," said Abby. "But tomorrow
I want to have a BIG adventure."
"Abby, don't you think that one adventure is
enough?"
The End
