Edna the Witch

by tbbd

It had to be one of the largest yet and very ugly also. It’s hairy legs and slimy green belly made the spyder quite terrifying. It was a perfect specimen. She carefully urged into the jar she was holding in front of it so as not to damage it’s delicate legs. They were the most important part after all. She reached into her bag to check the contents. A large moss spyder, a blood mushroom, an assortment of herbs, and some purple worm she found as an extra. Good, everything there, she thought. It was time for Edna to head home.

After months of waiting for just the right time of the year when the spyders are out, she had finally got all her ingredients for the last spell. This would be the one that would prove her status as a full witch. Edna had been practicing for this her whole life. She would finally be one of them now. She did everything they expected and she learned well. She practiced all her spells every day and did her research thoroughly. The time was here at last.

Edna spent the next few days locked in her tower worked harder than ever before. The witches’ convention was only a couple days away and there was no time to waste. She combined all the right ingredients at exactly the right times. Applied just the right amount of magic here and there and followed the instructions to the last letter. The spell was finally complete. The ceremony was that day and she almost hear them declaring her a witch.

She dipped the potion from the cauldron she cooked in and poured it over her broomstick. The same broomstick she crafted herself. She had carved the handle from one of the Brain Tree’s branches and stolen the straw from an unsuspecting scarecrow from the pumpkin patch at the edge of the Haunted Woods. The broomstick already spoke of power, just wait until it was finished she thought. She then enchanted the final few words over the broomstick and it began to glow. Softly at first then wildly light a candle flame caught in a passing breeze. It stopped just as suddenly as it had started and Edna knew that it was done. She had the power to command the woods now.

The ceremony started right at dark. Edna was ready. She had brought some peanut butter spyders to munch on in case she got nervous, but she found she was just the opposite. She ate them anyway to be sociable and patiently waited for the event to start. The witches gathered around and started a bonfire from their fingertips. The eldest came forward and delivered a long speech about the history of witches and the passing of knowledge from one generation to the next. She then turned to Edna.

The elder chanted a few words very softly. She then motioned her hands in some circles and began to speak louder. Blue lightning flashed from her hands and arched across the sky. It ripped through the dark searching for its target. It closed down on Edna to strike her where she stood. Edna didn’t move, nor did she speak. She simply held out her broomstick towards the oncoming blue train of light. The lightning hit the broomstick with such force the Edna should have been laying on the ground. Instead she stood tall and the stick absorbed the lightning and glowed faintly to reveal that its charge was holding.

The elder turned to Edna and said, “From this day forth let it be known in all of Neopia that you will be called Edna the Witch.”
