The first Kau's to roam across Neopia happened many, many months ago. One of
the first ever created was a young calf named SnowFlake. She was a beautiful
calf, with snow-white fur, a rose pink nose and big blue eyes. She was adventurous
though, and many times as she got herself into trouble.
It had been her curious and adventurous nature that had resulted her in being
the first spotted Kau.
"Mum, I'm going out," Snowflake called. Her mum nodded.
"OK, Snowflake Be careful!" Her mum replied.
"Yeah mum," Snowflake replied, somewhat embarrassed.
Snowflake was walking down to the lake, a popular place for Neopians. Near
it was a mud patch, and no one had ever gone there. Only few had been foolish
enough to venture down there and the few had come out with their fur a dark
brown.
"Snowflake!" a voice called out. Snowflake turned round in time to see her
friend, a purple Kau called Jay running towards her.
"Hey Jay," Snowflake said, smiling. Jay returned her smile. They walked down
to the water, discussing a whole matter of things. Neither saw the shape blocking
their path.
"Oof!" Snowflake said as she bumped into the shape. The shape smirked.
"Oh look what's bowing at my feet," they said sarcastically. A few Kau's around
them gave a nervous titter. One laughed out loud.
"Hi Sweetie," Snowflake replied. Standing in front of her was a striped calf
called SweetieCake124 but everyone called her Sweetie. Sweetie and Snowflake
had been deadly enemies since kindergarten.
"Oh look. A wimp," Sweetie said, her voice dripping with sarcasm.
"Watch it, Sweetie," Snowflake replied.
"Okay, if you're not a wimp… I dare you," Sweetie said. Snowflake raised an
eyebrow.
"I dare you to jump into the mud hole," Sweetie continued. A few people gasped.
Snowflake looked worried. If she jumped into the mud hole, she would surely
ruin her beautiful white fur. But if she didn't, Sweetie would never let her
live it down!
"I…" Snowflake started before Jay interrupted.
"Is your fur worth this dare?" Jay asked. "Don't do it."
"She's just a cowardly Lenny. A WOODEN SPOON Lenny!" Sweetie teased. That
was it!
"I accept," Snowflake said sternly. A gasp emitted from the small crowd and
a deadly silence overcame them. Even Sweetie looked nervous.
"OK," she said. "Come on." The group Quiggle-marched poor Snowflake down to
the mud hole. By this time, Snowflake was incredibly nervous. They stopped next
to it and Sweetie gave Snowflake a dirty look.
"Go on then," Sweetie said. Snowflake took a deep breath. She looked at the
mud and then back at Sweetie. The mud was a dark brown and in places, the mud
was a lighter chocolate brown where the sun had partially dried it. Snowflake
took another deep breath.
"Okay then. Stand back!" Snowflake announced. She took the dive at a run.
Closing her eyes, she dove into the black, oozing mud.
She coughed and spluttered as she surfaced. Spitting out mud, she glared triumphantly
at Sweetie.
"Ha!" she said.
"Okay, you win," Sweetie admitted reluctantly. Snowflake thought that was
the best words ever muttered. The words from her mother, however were not…

Snowflake arrived home half an hour later covered from head to hoof in thick,
oozing mud.
"WHAT HAVE YOU DONE YOU BLASTED CALF?" SnowFlake's mother asked, horrified.
Snowflake gave a sheepish look at her mother. "Um... it's kinda a long story
mum," Snowflake muttered. Snowflake's mother glared at her.
"Humour me," she said in a voice, which suggested she wasn't in the mood to
laugh.

Three hours of inpatient scrubbing later, Snowflake's white fur was still
mucky. Parts of the white fur had shone through and the rest was dark brown
and black.
"What have I done?" Snowflake thought miserably.

However, at school, Snowflake's fur was an instant hit. Before long, the rage
was to have spotted fur. Snowflake couldn't believe her luck. Eventually, the
Faerie Queen created a spotted Paint Brush to allow all Kau's to have the same
look as Snowflake Soon the spotted look was adapted for Blumaroo's, Aisha's
and all other types of NeoPets.
But Snowflake could always say to her grand-calves and greatgrand-calves,
"I was the original Spotted Kau!"
