Darkwise

by averyangryshaylir

Nobody understands me...

Darkwise, a cynical pirate Krawk, thought bitterly to himself as he flopped out of bed. Rubbing his bleary sleepless eyes he stood up, realising he hadn’t gotten much sleep at all again.

“Stupid dreams...” he murmured quietly to himself as he picked up his bandana and tied it around his forehead to tame his wild mane of gray hair. It was one of those overly bright sunny mornings, and the blinding glare of the sun nearly sent Darkwise reeling as he turned around to place his hook hand on. Shooting the rays of sun light a nasty glower the Krawk ambled out of his room.

Not many people liked Darkwise. That didn’t bother him, because he didn’t like them either. In fact, he hated everybody and everything. He was bitter, sarcastic, and cynical. A grouch all around. Most people and their pets believed that he was this way because that’s just the way he was. They thought he was just naturally pessimistic, as some pets and people are.

They were wrong. Darkwise wasn’t just “naturally” unhappy. He didn’t have such a negative demeanour because he chose to be like that. It wasn’t even that he had had a depressing past.

Darkwise was...different from all the other pets. Physically he seemed almost normal enough. He had the overall look of your average pirate Krawk There was only one thing about his look that separated him from the other pirate Krawks.

     His eyes.

His right eye was the normal grayish tinge of a pirate Krawk His left eye, on the other hand, was a sharp bluish hue that seemed to emit a faint glow. Most people thought it was just a minor deformity. A mere flaw that didn’t effect him in anyway other than aesthetically, but again this is where they misjudged Darkwise.

His eyes were the reason he the way he was. Darkwise didn’t know how or why it had happened to him. He supposed it was because of his name, or maybe that’s why he was given his name. He couldn’t be sure which it was. You see, His eyes weren’t your normal average eyes. At least one of them wasn’t. His right eye could see things normally, like every other person or Neopet with decent vision. While in his left eye...

Well, In his left eye he didn’t see things like everybody else did. It didn’t have a lack of sight, it was more like some kind of twisted sixth sense. An extra sense he had no need or care for, yet he couldn’t do anything about it.

Darkwise saw the darkness in all people. It was as if his left eye opened a door in people’s minds, memories, and hearts that revealed the worst about that particular pet or person. He knew he must have been born this way, because ever since he could remember he would have visions of the evil inside people constantly. Whenever he was introduced to a person he saw their flaws, their darkest emotions, their greedy ambitions. He always saw the worst of every situation, and not in a figurative way, but in a literal one. He really honestly had no choice.

The things he knew about some people were what caused the nightly recurrence of nightmares. Most of the time he didn’t even remember what his nightmares were about the next morning, he just knew they had to do with his “sixth sense” and that he felt as if he hadn’t slept at all.

Sighing Darkwise shook his head trying to bring clarity to his mind, but he couldn’t. His brain seemed to have stopped functioning for the moment from sheer exhaustion. Muttering darkly to himself he finally reached the end of the hall and took a sharp turn into the kitchen.

“Good Morning Darkwise!” Shaylir said cheerfully as she peered up from a copy of The Neopian Times. She brushed a piece of raven black hair away from her eyes to give him a curious look. “Sleep well?” She didn’t know about his nightmares, nobody did. Darkwise preferred to keep them to himself. He shook his head in disgust as an image formed in his left eye. Last night when Shaylir had said she was going to go shopping for them she had really bet a good hunk of their NP away in Dice-A-Roo.

“Yeah, Sure, Whatever,” Darkwise responded bluntly as he collapsed into his designated seat at the family table and began to chomp down on the bowl of neoflakes Shaylir had left him. Sure, she seemed nice enough, but she wasn’t really. She was selfish and cruel just like everybody else. He knew the truth about everybody.

“Oh look. It seems like we’re still free of the Myyth ruling over Neopia. Hmm, I wonder why? Maybe it’s because you’re a failure Myyth,” Darkwise told his fire Eyrie brother cynically, favouring him with his dark eye.

It was strange, Myyth was the only pet Darkwise could look at without seeing images of the evil he did or felt. Possibly it was because Myyth wore his emotions on his shoulder. Darkwise honestly did not know. Still, Darkwise enjoying trying to make people as miserable as he was even if sometimes he did not do a very good job at succeeding at it. Shaylir shot a glare at the bitter Krawk for insulting his brother in such a manner. Darkwise merely shrugged.

“Hmph, You have no idea what you’re talking about Darkwise. I’m taking my time, Neopia will be mine soon enough,” Myyth replied, unfazed as he took a bite out of his omelette. He whispered something to Shaeylan, their baby Kougra sister, who nodded in response. Soon after both of them left the table. Shaylir only shook her head and made a clucking sound with her tongue. Like Darkwise she honestly didn’t believe Myyth was a threat.

This left Rhapsody, their adopted sister left at the table. Rhapsody rarely spoke to Darkwise and when she did it was only to ask him to pass the peas, or something of that nature. To be honest, he hardly knew her and he didn’t quite understand the images he received in his left eye when he looked at her. He knew it was something bad she had done before she had come to live with them, but none of it made any sense at all. Darkwise did not know that Rhapsody was really a Chaos Faerie in disguise who had come to spoil Myyth’s plots, he only thought she was an ordinary Kau. So naturally when he saw images of sloth, the space faerie, and something about betrayal it truly puzzled him. He did not know comprehend how a simple faerie Kau would have any contact with sloth or the space faerie. He took his gaze away from his sister to prevent further confusion and stood up to wash his plate.

All the time Darkwise wondered why he possessed such a strange ability, and cursed himself for having it. Almost always he wished it had never been laid upon him, That he could be normal like most other Neopets. Then, there were other times, when he really thought about it that he appreciated it. It showed him the real truth behind people and pets. It showed that nobody was truly good and that everybody had darkness in them. Sure, it made Darkwise a less trusting person. It made him wary of others. It made him really think about who he was friends with.

But maybe, just maybe, that was a good thing.
