The Ideal Neopia: On the Pound

by sol_luna_estrella

PET CENTRAL - There are so many Neopets in the Pound, so many. You probably think that there are too many pets staying with Dr_Death; yet you may not be totally in the right. Abandoning your pet is such a horrible thing to do, you probably think, and I happen to disagree. I agree in some respects, but in others, abandoning may not be such a horrible thing.

Yes, "The Ideal Neopia" is back, and in this week's topic, I want to talk about the Pound and if it is a good or bad thing.

Now, say you were a Neopet, a less wanted species, with a terrible name and terrible stats and a terribly mean personality. You were in the Pound, abandoned because of a terrible thing you did to your terrible owner. How are you going to feel sitting in your cage in the Pound, people passing you by to adopt other Neopets? You guessed it-just terrible.

However, there is a way past all this. Your stats can be increased, there are people who like some of the less wanted species, and you can always have a nickname instead of the name you have. As to your personality, your new owner can change all that by some good discipline. Eventually, you are going to be adopted, and your life won't be so terrible anymore.

Yes, we all have always known that the Adoption side of the Pound is a good thing. However, this good thing came from the Abandoning side of the Pound, and we wouldn't need adoption if we didn't have this side of the Pound.

Day after day, people abandon their Neopets, sometimes with tears, and sometimes with a "goodbye and good riddance" kind of attitude. "With tears?" you may ask. Yes. With tears.

For example, say you were moving away and you knew you would never have time for Neopets, even just to put your pets in the Neolodge every few weeks, and you couldn't bear to starve them. You know you have to write that horrible e-mail to the Neopets Team to tell them you have to remove your account, but you don't want to send your pets hurtling through an endless Internet black hole. You want to know your pets go to other homes so they can be happy. You have to abandon them.

Then, there are the cruel type who abandon their pets just so they can get a limited edition pet or just to be cruel. Goodbye and good riddance.

Look at this from the point-of-view of a pet. Many well-treated pets dread being abandoned. They are just too happy with their current owner. They couldn't bear going away. However, think of a mistreated pet who is always hungry and bored and homeless and whose owner is mean. Despite their forced, pseudo-smiles when they are finally given a toy, is it possible they want to be abandoned so they can start a happier life? Absolutely!

The part of the ideal Neopia that this article wants to make noticed is that yes, adoption is good for most pets unless they get a neglectful owner, but abandoning isn't always bad. Sometimes it is needed and wanted by the owner or pet, sometimes it is wanted by the owner or pet, but it isn't always cruel and awful. The ideal Neopia's citizens would only abandon pets unless it is absolutely necessary or if they truly feel that their pets are unhappy with them.

Your step to take is to adopt a pet, if you can, or at least take one in for a while to keep it happy. I would suggest also that you not abandon any pet this week unless it is totally needful. Help make Neopia a happier place for some pet!
