Hold the slots that: have numbers, especially high ones (3, 2, 1,), are the same, but don't absolutely have to be in a row, have high winning rewards (melons, bells, etc. Check the reward section of Scorchy Slots before you play to know what to look for). What this does: It increases your chance of winning good chunks of NP. Okay, say you've won some NP and your NP is above 100 now. The instant you get NP over 100 and stop winning on the next click, go to the bank and deposit 100 NP. Now go back with your remaining NP and play again. Keep doing this until you run out of Neopoints in your hand. There is a very good chance that you will end up with more than you started with as long as you play smart. Now, say you had a small amount of NP left and for some reason it was taken, whether by the evil Scorchio, the Korbats or just some random event. If you're in the negatives, leave Scorchy Slots and play a round or two of the Great NeoPets Hunt or Kacheek Seek. That should help you even out.
