There once was a Kau named Razbury for she sported a
rich soft coat of raspberry red. The same kind you would find on a hot
summer day hidden in the bushes among all the plain greens and browns
of the foliage. This too was the same for Razbury because not one single
Kau other than her had a red coat; they all had the same boring green.
Her father Goven, the alpha Kau of the Silflay Plains (Pronounced sill-flay)
continuously moved his herd along in fear of outlaw Gelerts and sly Kyriis
who would cheat you out of everything you owned. Goven, taught her daughter
to be cautious and careful but she was like the western wind, untamable
and headstrong.
During her 15th summer in the plains, Razbury had suddenly
become antsy and agitated. While the other Kaus were completely content
chewing the lush grass and dandelions and not at all worried about what
the next day had in store for them Razbury always felt that something
was missing in her life. One night she had a dream, she dreamed that she
had sprouted wings so that she could fly far far away and explore lands
that she never knew even existed. Razbury felt so free and happy in the
dream that when she woke up she didn't know which one was real. When she
did she was so disappointed that she knew what her destiny would be. Luckily
Goven knew that her daughter was different from the rest and like the
summer breeze that blows nothing could anchor her down and make her stay.
Razbury's decision to leave the herd was not a huge shock to the herd
either in fact many said that it was in her blood, just like it was for
her mother.
At first she enjoyed being independent, going where she
pleased, stopping when she wanted to and taking a drink whenever she was
thirsty. But after a couple miles Razbury felt a twinge of loneliness
set in, with no crowd of Kaus to keep her company or the safety of the
herd she felt afraid and lost for the very first time in her life. At
one point she even considered turning back and returning home but the
image of her proud father made her turn and continue. ' What would everyone
think if the leader's daughter chickened out on the first day and didn't
even set foot out of Kau territory?' she thought as she wearily trampled
on. Little did she know that she had said this out loud nor had she noticed
the gang of Gelerts following behind her. With one powerful lunge the
leader of the gang jumped right over her and landed soundlessly in front
of her. "What's a young'n like you doing all alone in these parts?" he
asked coyly. His huge sharp teeth glittered in the sun and in the moonlight
she could see the dog's tattered ear and the huge scar underneath his
left eye.
"My herd is nearby, I just ran ahead to scout. Now either
you leave me alone or I'll call for help! "Maintaining eye contact she
tried hard not to let her voice quiver or to let them see her legs tremble.
"Oh, I don't think so my pretty. "Came a voice from behind.
Another more heavily built Gelert followed by 2 others crowded around
her in a circle.
"Yeah, you wouldn't turn back now, what would your father
think?" The leader said as he leaned closer closing off the circle and
destroying the any chance for the Kau to escape. "What do you say boys
if we take her back and ask for a colourful price in return for her safety?"
"Ahh, sure boss, whatever you say," laughed the clumsy
heavily built one.
"I wouldn't suggest it Tamaric," came a new voice. Looking
behind the leader saw a lone cybunny standing tall in the dark. Relatively
small but well built with cool blue eyes and a turquoise collar the Cybunny
didn't look at all worried. "Now either let the Kau go or I will make
you and your thugs," he said looking over the 3 others, "Wish you were
never born. " Tamaric the Gelert laughed a hoarse laugh and started walking
towards the Cybunny.
"And if I don't Bari? You and your pathetic troupe isn't
here to boss me around. I'm not in Cy territory." Sneering he turned around
and walked once again towards the Kau "If I were you bunny I'd leave now
before we get hungry and decide to eat you."
"Yeah, hahaha, eat you!" repeated one of the other Gelerts
in a rather stupid tone. With a stern look Bari stared at the leader and
whistled loudly. Like a tsunami, a wave of Cybunnies hiding nearby rose
from their hiding spots and encircled the gang of Gelerts and the Kau
"No tatters," hinting the almost missing ear on the leader's
head. "If I were a Gelert I'd leave now before I call my other band of
reinforcements to show. "Thinking hard Tamaric knew what Cybunnies could
do when they put their minds to it. Deciding not to risk it he growled
a whipped his huge tail making a loud snap noise.
"Come on gang, that scrawny Kau wasn't worth our time
anyway. And you," Glaring at Bari he continued, "You'd better watch it
or else " Biting hard on his teeth it produced a loud crack noise but
Bari only looked bored and smiled lightly.
"Scram, pup!!!" Reluctantly the dogs obeyed and within
minutes the entire ordeal was over.
"T-Thank you, Bari," whispered the Kau shyly rather ashamed
that she could not be as bold and get rid of the Gelerts. "I am forever
in your debt." Gaining more confidence as she continued to talk. "And
I vow to stay with you until my debt is paid."
"Oh no, no it's quite-"
"Oh no I insist. And that's final."
Walking over to them she followed them back to their
burrows finally feeling safe and glad she did not have to be alone for
the night.
The burrows were deep and big enough so that even a Kau
could fit inside. The walls were composed of dirt with torches placed
every few meters so that the animals could see where they were going.
Razbury was treated like a guest of honour and the group made a huge bonfire
welcoming her. "Thank you all for having me as your guest, I promise I
will leave once my debt is paid," she said solemnly.
"She could get the Amulet of the Cy world back!" hollered
a youngster.
"Dandy!" his mother quickly covered a paw over his mouth
so that he could say no more.
"What is the Amulet of the Cy world?" Razbury asked.
For a while Bari just looked calmly into the fire and
since he did not answer she did not push the question further.
"A long time ago there was a ruler of the Cy world and
he divided his land into 4 sections. I was chosen to govern a certain
section of that land. When the king died argument arose on who the new
ruler was to be. Since he had no heir the 4 rulers including me fought
for the position. Four nights ago a Grarrl named Karnann stomped into
our territory's capital and stole the amulet of the Cy world. It was then
that someone suggested a test. Only someone with wits and bravery could
possibly get it back."
"Then I will get it back for you," Razbury said.
"Things are not that simple young Kau You have no idea
what Grarrls are capable of. And what if he refuses to give it back? Do
you propose we steal from him?" whispers arose at the thought for Cybunny's
were known for their honesty and stealing was an act punishable by death.
"I'll find a way Bari, I'll find a way………….. " That night
while everyone slept she stayed up thinking of a speech to say to the
king. ' What is the Grarrl king like? 'she thought.
The next morning Bari and Razbury started their trek
from the burrows to the Grarrl caves. Leaving behind the rest of the group
Bari who was one of the leaders felt it was his responsibility to come
along. The trek would not be hard since the Grarrls footprints made huge
imprints and the area had not rained at all in the last few days. With
a small pack on each of their backs they started their journey quickly
and within an hour they were out of site from the burrows. The only indication
that the duo had ever been in the area were the unmistakable hoof prints
which were side by side the smaller and more detailed rabbit paw prints.
At around noon Bari spotted something in the horizon.
The mountain nearby had a huge hole, a cave glowing with fire. To be sure
they still followed the imprints and in doing so they found a secret way
up the steep altitude. "Halt! Who goes there?" came a harsh voice. Standing
on its hind legs a green Grarrl wearing militia armour and holding a rather
sharp spear looked down upon the 2. Bari who was quickly trying to think
of a good excuse stuttered.
"We have heard so much of your great king. They say he
is very powerful and wise. My friend and I wanted to see for ourselves
just how great he is." Razbury said rehearsing the lines she had thought
up the night before.
"The king is busy. Now scram! " The Grarrl said harshly.
"Come on Bari, I knew it was too good to be true. The
king of the Grarrls must be a real clumsy spoilt buffoon if he's always
busy. You're probably just trying to hide the truth from us," smiling
Razbury gave a secret wink to the Cybunny.
"Yeah, wait until the others hear this! I always wondered
if the rumour that Grarrls had only a 5 second memory was true." Laughing
he turned around but by then the guard's pride had outweighed his duties.
Jabbing his sharp spear lightly into the side of the Cybunny he motioned
them to follow.
"Grarrls no stupid! Our king will show you! "Pointing
his small forehand at them. Walking along Razbury felt proud that her
plan had worked but also worried at what the king of the Grarrls might
do to them.
Knocking on a stone wall the guard roared. "Your majesty!"
pausing he added. "You have visitors!" The door creaked open and the guard
stepped aside to let the two through. The minute the two stepped foot
in the room the door slammed behind them making a loud echo bounce around
the almost empty room.
"What do you two want?" The king sneered. For a king
he was very well clothed. With a fur robe and jewels sewn right onto his
cloths and a crown that glittered like a star on top of his head." The
doctor said I need at least 14 hours of sleep or else I'll get bags under
my eyes." Raising an eyebrow Razbury looked in shock at what a supposedly
ferocious Grarrl was saying. " I'm serious I need my beauty sleep."
"We'll leave you alone oh great king as soon as you return
something that belongs to my people," said Bari
."Oh and if I don't?" the spoilt King said.
"Then I'll make sure you never get a wink of sleep again
and by then you'll look so ugly that no Grarrl in the right mind would
think you were actually king." Razbury said holding back giggles. However
Karnann did not take this as a joke. His lazy eyes popped open and he
sat up straight.
"You wouldn't," he dared, staring Razbury eyed the King.
"Try me." Fear actually filled the king's eyes and for
a second he forgot who he was--the king.
"Okay, okay what is it you wanted."
"The amulet of the Cy world, the one you stole from the
kingdom not too long ago," Bari informed him.
"Don't have it," he said simply.
"WHAT! How can you not have it?" Bari demanded angry.
"Whoa, geez loueese. I told you I don't have it."
"What did you do with it? " Razbury asked in a gentler
tone.
"I threw it away. It had such an ugly green colour and
it didn't match my décor." Waving his hand towards the blue silk tapestries
and the turquoise cushions.
"Where did you throw it?" Razbury said wishing with all
her might it wouldn't be the Jetsam infested lake.
"Oh I thought I'd give it to the Jetsams as a gift."
"You threw the amulet into the lake?" Bari said in disbelief.
"Well, duh. Didn't I already say that like 15 million
times?" the king said sarcastically.
"Well then, your highness. Thank you for your time."
Taking a huge step back Razbury bowed then make a half run for the door.
"Yes, yes your highness. Thank-you for your time," Bari
said shaking with fury. Running to catch up with the Kau they made a run
for it out of there as quickly as they could. The guard outside saw them
run as fast as they could out smiled pleased.
"I told you King very powerful!" he roared. Razbury and
Bari ran as fast as they could, finding the appropriate rocks to jump
off of. Since the Jetsam infested lake had been sited by Razbury while
they were on the cliffs they did not have any trouble finding it. Not
at all hesitating the Kau leapt into the pool but the Cybunny stopped
at the edge and stared at his reflection.
"Bari, are you coming?" Razbury asked worried.
"Yeah, yeah I'm coming," he murmured. Taking a huge breath
he diving in and the Kau quickly followed. Underwater the Kau shuddered
at the murky pools of algae and the dying seaweed floating here and there.
Without realising what was happening a sudden net surrounded the two and
four Jetsams were seen dragging them towards the glowing city below. Well
at least we don't have to swim, Razbury thought optimistically. Inside
the city the air domes allowed the 2 prisoners to finally exhale and breathe
again.
"Prisoners sire," said one of the guards.
"Excellent," the king whispered.
"Shall we prepare the cauldron?" one of the other guards
asked.
"Not yet. I think we should have a little fun first."
"Of course, sire," the first guard said pleased. Razbury
shuddered at the thought of dying in a boiling cauldron.
"If you wish to have some fun then let's make a bet,"
Razbury said suddenly with a new idea.
"Oh, I do so love bets," the King said.
"I will tell you a story-" she began.
"I've heard them all," he interrupted.
"Then I promise you I'll tell you a story that you've
never heard of. If you haven't heard of it then my comrade and I leave
safely and if I you have then- "
"Then you'll be very sorry!" the Jetsam said enthusiastically
and the roared a huge laugh.
"But then I think you'd get the better side of the bargain.
Let's say you and I sweeten the deal a little, shall we?" the Kau continued.
"Razbury, what are you doing?" Bari whispered.
"You'll see," she whispered.
"If you have heard it both my comrade and I will be destroyed
in whatever way you please but if you haven't then we leave safely with
a certain procession of yours."
"Good! Oh I do so love a gusty Kau It's a deal!"
"All right then."
Clearing her throat she began, "Once upon a time there
was a Kau who was free spirited and wild. One day she decided that -"
"I've heard it! Start the kettle Jakar," the Jetsam said
gleefully.
"I'm not done yet your majesty. I promise it's a story
you've never heard of."
"Fine, then, what's another minute or two going to hurt?
Continue."
"One day she decided that she wouldn't be like the other
Kaus, only grazing and moving day in and day out. She wished to have an
adventure, where she would be able to see lands that she never knew existed
and meet people that she had only heard of in stories. So she left her
herd and that night while she was all alone in the endless plains a gang
of Gelerts threatened to take her hostage. It was then that a group of
Cybunnies rescued her and from that day on she vowed to repay their generosity.
That night at a bonfire the leader told her of a Grarrl king that stole
a necklace belonging to the king. The Kau decided she would get it back
for them at whatever costs and the next morning they set out. Following
the footprints they found the king only to hear the king of the Grarrls
say that he had thrown it into a Jetsam infested lake. They dove underwater
in search of it but a group of ferocious Jetsams captured them and brought
them to their king." Razbury stopped there.
"So what did he do? Did the king eat them?" The jetsam
said excited.
"You've never heard of this story?" Razbury said pleased.
"No, but you can't go until you finish it," the Jetsam
said stubbornly.
"I'm afraid this story does not end but only continues
and once we meet again I will tell you more." The king suddenly realised
that the story was about the Kau herself and keeping his part of the deal
he let them go along with the amulet.
"Razbury you are truly and inspiration to us all," Bari
said once they were on land again.
"Here take half of the amulet," he said as smashed a
huge rock onto it and broke it in half. Slipping one piece onto her neck.
"There now all the Cybunnies will know that you once helped their king
and if you ever run into trouble they will always be at your service.
This piece however, "Holding up the other piece in his paw, "will be the
evidence needed to prove to the others that I had retrieved the amulet."
Looking at Razbury sadly he asked, "Are you sure you
aren't coming back with me?"
"Adventure calls my friend and like the wind I can never
stay in one place forever," Razbury said reluctantly.
"Then I wish you all of luck." Giving the Kau a hug he
turned back and walked.
"Good-bye Bari," she whispered and then she too turned
and started walking not knowing what other exciting adventures would hold
in store for her.
The End
