Pteri Story

by Coco5000M

"Tap Tap, Tap Tap" went my beak against the hard Tyrannian desert soil. I was a wild Pteri living on the Plateau. My yellow color provided excellent camouflage, so I didn't have to worry about prehistoric Grarrls or anything of that sort. My worries focused around the humans. Our Pteri race had been recently discovered by those Neopians. Pteris were being adopted and becoming pets. PETS! What happened to our ancient traditions? Weren't we always the Tyrannian symbol of freedom? I was one of the few wilds Pteris that still remained.

On this regular hot day I was searching for some food. Us wild Pteris could no longer visit the Omelette that often because we could attract attention from the humans. Only by the cover of night could we feast. But night was long away. I was hungry now.

I first went out to the Band Hall to see if anyone had dropped something edible. No, just the usual disgusting Nachos, Hamburgers and Popcorn that the fans always brought. Urgh, humans! I flew towards the Lair of the Beast. I had to get away from these populated areas!

At the lair, I doubted finding any humans as they are all terrified of the prehistoric Pteri who lives there. As I headed for the entrance, I heard the crunching of shoes on dusty gravel. Humans! I quickly hit behing a rock. Yes, a human and Pteri! A Pteri with a human! I was outraged.

I got prepared to attack. I built up my speed and ran towards the pair. I let out our Pteri war cry, which is very very high pitched. The two were startled and they ran from the cave. As I tried to stop, I slipped and skidded down the pathway. I tumbled and turned, then blacked out.

When I woke up, I was confined to a small white bed. There were lights flashing all around, and other creatures were everywhere! Most terrifying of all, there was an arrow under my wing!!!

A creature close by (I think it's called an El-e-phan-te, I recognised its trunk) noticed that I had woken up. As it approached me I screamed, "Stay away from me!" and tried to lift my wings. The Elephante pulled out the arrow, painlessly! He read something off of it and mumbled, "Hundred one....hmmmmmmmm....a bit high. He should stay in bed." Later I learned that the "arrow" was a devise called a ther-mom-e-ter. It is used to measure something called tem-per-a-ture. Weird.

Anyway, back to my story. I sat there in this bed, not a bit sleepy. I glanced at my surroundings. And I noticed that same human and Pteri were watching me! They were waving to me. I turned my head away from them. At least I was being treated by an Elephante, not a human....

I had evidently fallen and bumped my head real hard, for there was a big cold ice pack on my head. I was also all itchy and there were red bumps all over me. Did I have that disease, called, umm......Neo-pox? It was new to us Tyrannians, it had been brought to our country by the tourists from Neopia. Our medicine Chombys had no cure for it!

The Elephante came to me again with a flat pastry that had a green color to it (It's called neo-pox pi-zza by the Neopians). "what's that?" I asked.

"What will stop all that itching. That kind lady over there bought it for you" the Elephante said, pointing towards the human that I had met in front of the Lair, "This pizza is very rare and expensive!"

Rare and expensive it may be, but YUCK! That pizza is naaaaasty. No wonder our medicine Chombys don't have it, they would never develop something so distasteful! As I was trying to get rid of that awful taste, the itching and red spots disappeared. I felt better, but I was tired and my head still throbbed. "Time for some sleep, young Pteri!" said the Elephante I soon dozed off.

When I woke up again, I was in a different bed. I was in a separate room. No lights, no creatures, just me and some furniture. I hopped out of bed, my headache gone, and flew towards my window. I eagerly glanced outside, looking for my beloved Tyrannia. But nothing, I only saw NeoPets playing, owners talking, Pets Pets walking around, nothing that you would see in the wild, uninhabited Tyrannia I knew. Suddenly, it dawned upon me. I was in NEOPIA CENTRAL!!!!!!!!!

I quickly pulled away from the window and flew up the door. I whizzed down to the first level of the building. Room to room to room I went, yet I couldn't find a way out! I went to the next and last room, and there I found the HUMAN! I tried to turn around and run, but the door had closed behind me, and I couldn't open it with my wings. I slowly faced the human, with both anger and fear....

"Don't worry, I wont hurt you!" she said.

"Yes you will. You are a human." I replied.

"I bought you that pizza that cured the Neopox....." she said slowly.

"It was because of you that I got that Neopox in the first place!" I responded angrily.

"I have another Pteri. What wrong have I done to him?" she questioned.

"You took him as a pet. Pteris are a free bird, and you humans changed all that!" I said angrier that ever. "I have had enough of this! I want to go back to Tyrannia!"

"Very well. But if you are ever in need, you are always welcome here!" she said, a bit sad.

With that she opened the door, and I flew out to my freedom. As I flew away in a flurry of yellow I managed to catch the house number. I flew and flew for many days, thinking about what had happened. Should I have stayed with her? What was her other Pteri like? Was Tyrannia the safest place for me?

Finally, I reached my home. I fell exhausted onto the hot sand. I fell asleep. When I woke up, it was nighttime. I hopped (I was too tired to fly) to the Omelette. No one was there. I ate until my little belly was satisfied. Then I dragged myself to my tree, where I usually slept.

When I woke up, I was a changed Pteri. I was no longer afraid of humans. I first flew to the Band Hall, and talked to some of the pet Pteris. I even tried a Nacho, and I have concluded that they are OK. I visited many other locations on the Plateau, and socialised with everyone, NeoPet and owner.

Now, as I look back on my adventure, I really miss the girl who saved me that day. I wish I had said thank-you, and hadn't been that rude. I don't even know her name! I can only use the house number to know that it's her. Maybe some day I will make the trip back to Neopia Central, and pay my friends a visit.

The End
