Fridays at Midnight

Note: This story was inspired by a certain petpet; can you figure out which one before you finish the tale?

Up in the neck of this land, you would find such interesting things. Unlike Faerieland that is filled glorious castles and Faeries galore, this particular land specializes in the abnormal... supernatural more like it. Now you see, this area is not for the faint of heart; there are skulls sporadically placed throughout the cemetery, no sunray shines down on this spooky land so cobwebs are everywhere, and a mysterious beast lurks behind a large tree and moans and groans throughout the night. For these reasons, this is not a place that you want to be walking around at night, especially alone.

What is peculiar about this place is the large grey brick tower that is synonymous with Haunted Woods. The exterior of the establishment can make any courageous Neo-citizen feel uneasy: its windows are almost in the shape of menacing eyes, and since the building towers over the entire land, it brings a sense of unease as it emits the feeling of someone constantly watching over you - almost as if a big brother is scrutinizing your every move.

After years of neglect, the building is in complete and utter shambles: the green shingles are falling through the roof, thus providing no shelter to the inhabitants of the tower, the glass on the windows are shattered with shards of glass on the concrete ground, and every night at exactly midnight, there would be an unbearable crackle that would echo throughout the land.

For those who are brave enough to venture through this particular tower, there are no obstacles in the way - the entrance is wide open and thus anyone can enter. Once you pass the entrance, you meet a spiral concrete staircase that goes upward - about 45 feet high. There is no lightening in the dark tower, but dimly lit torches strategically placed on the walls every 15 steps you take.

Cobwebs are in every nook and cranny of the tower, and Spyders are roaming around the area, erecting a beautiful silk web trap for any prey. In addition to the dimly lit torches, there are multiple glowing yellow eyes gazing at you, and illuminating against the dark background of the tower.

For those who are unaware of the existence of this yellow-eyed creature, do not fret as these little petpets are completely harmless once you feed them. At first they are docile creatures who would simply gaze at you, but afterwards they will approach you in search for food. If you offer nothing to them then they will follow you - with each step you take they will take two.

As you continue to go up the stairs, these little critters become more aggressive - there would nudge the bottom of your leg or even bite you with one of their fanged teeth, but no words would be spoken. At first it doesn't seem like a nuisance, but hoards of these little fanged critters would eventually surround you and bombard you for food. Once you give it attention, the little green furball would reciprocate the attention with a smile that takes up half of its face.

For those who are put off by this petpet's behavior, you are in luck because this petpet can *only* be found in this tower. This means that if you feel uneasy by their presence, you can exit the tower without fearing of the mini petpet following you to your neohome.

Although the petpet emits no noise, spooky sounds rebound off the concrete walls and would echo throughout the tower. It could be either the trickling of water due to the disheveled roof, the scratching of the tree branches on the exterior walls, or even a distinctive CRACKLING sound coming from the top floor.

What's most offending is the odor emitting from the tower. Some Neo-citizens say since there is a lack of sunlight and poor plumbing, there is a disturbing and offending mold-like smell that almost attacks your sinuses! Other Neo-citizens think it reeks because of the poor hygiene of the furry green petpets. In fact, the fur is so bushy it's almost uncombable! Other people say it's because of a witch that lives in the top of the tower...

Oh, did I forget to mention there is a witch? How do we explain her? She has a warty green complexion, three black spots on her right ear and tail, and a tail that ends in a spade. Here is some advice: Do not ask her about her tail. I cannot highlight this enough, do NOT ask her about her tail. In fact, don't you dare glance at it, even for a second!

She wears a customary black witch's hat and a traditional black robe. In her right hand, she clutches onto a 3-prong silver fork and she is often hunched over a brewing red cauldron. Interestingly, people have said that reason for her complexion is because her concoctions emit a green gas that's almost hazardous!

She enjoys dealing with magical spells and potions. Her most popular concoction is her Glowing Spell of Kacheek Charm - it makes every single Kacheek within a 10 kilometer radius susceptible to the conjurer's good looks. For those who do not believe in traditional medicine, she specializes in homeopathic medication - want to give a pesky Kacheek spots or itches? Her Glowing Amulet of Kacheek Frazzling is the spell for you!

However, these magical spells are not made in a snap - it not only requires ingredients, but immense effort is a must otherwise the potency of the spell won't be at its maximum! Most notably, time is of the essence for her - the average time it takes to complete a single spell is about two hours. At the same time, this means it is difficult for her to find time to maintain the tower or even feed the little critters hanging around. However, her spells are so incredibly strong that she is famous around Neopia - visitors come from all across the world, even from the depths of Maraqua, the lost city of Altador, or even high up from Virtupets Space Station. Even the yellow-eyed petpets idolize the famed witch, and since imitation is the highest form of flattery, they wear a black witch's hat on top of their head.

These little critters are extremely aggressive and will hound Neo-citizens until they get food. The only individual the critters no longer bother is the famous witch of Haunted Woods because after months of constant whining, whimper, and crying, they became conditioned to the witches neglect. As a result, they began to seek nourishment from her frequent visitors.

Now I'm sure you're wondering why the witch neglects these little fanged critters - she obviously cares about her work, why doesn't she feel the same way about these petpets? Apparently, their obsession for food knows no bounds. You can even give it an Everlasting Apple and they'll still be asking for more! Eventually, she realized that offering food was a complete waste of time and her time should be better spent brewing potions and spells for her wait list of customers.

The witch, who was brewing a Glowing Potion of Techo Transforming (that happens to take 2 hours and 7 minutes to brew) turned towards the annoying little critter who kept nagging her for food, and exasperatedly roared out "No Furwitch! This spell requires both my time and effort, especially when I get so busy every Fridays at Midnight! I've told you dozens and dozens of times, I am too busy to feed you! Just ask one of my patrons for treats!"

Furwitch Trivia: You find these little critters hanging around Edna's tower begging for treats.
