Halloween Special - Haunted Woods Notable Characters

by xlorally

--------

Halloween is the day where people all around Neopia spent time enjoying themselves doing various types of activities like trick-or-treating, carving jack-o-lanterns, festive gathering, donning costumes, and eating treats.

However, for this issue, I am going to highlight one of the most famous Neopia lands, the Haunted Woods, and the characters that hail from this ghostly land. Being neighbours with both Faerieland and Lost Desert, Haunted Woods may also be known as spooky Halloween land. Others have proclaimed that you will never know what evils may lurk within this land.

There's plenty to do here such as questing for the famous witch Edna or the Brain Tree. But beware of the beast that lurks behind the tree... or else.

Enough of this rather boring introduction, let us move to the famous characters related to this haunted spooky land.

     Name: Gilly

     Species: Usul

Fond of: Rhubarb Pie, wildflowers, gruff Ixi witches

Featured in: The Castle of Eliv Thade (Games); The Tale of Woe (Plot)

Rather bad at Anagrams, reading maps

     Quote: "I hate getting lost!"

She was famously known as the character who starred in the anagram games called ‘The Castle of Eliv Thade’ alongside the infamous Eliv Thade himself. Eventually, she stumbled upon a gypsy camp and became the focal point of a new plot, The Tale of Woe. Along with Bruno and Sophie, she faced many obstacles while solving the mystery of Neovia's curse and resurrecting the town. Even to this day, Gilly still wanders around the haunted trails of Haunted Woods...

     Name: Albert

     Species: Mutant Kacheek

     Age: 14

Occupation: Appeasing the evil and bloated Esophagor night and day (mostly night)

Hobby: Etching gravestones in his spare time

Featured in: Mutant Graveyard of the Doom II (Games)

Quote: "Ugh, another dreaded sunny day, so let's go where we're happy...I guess I'll meet you at the Graveyard of Doom."

Albert was once a sweet spotted Kacheek with an aspiring plan to become the best gardener in Neopia. Unfortunately, the Esophagor cursed him into his current form; an ugly, hideous, disgusting, repulsive, grotesque, unpleasing to the eye creature. Now, Albert is forced to perform tasks for the Esophagor in the hopes the curse is lifted. All things considered, his desperation to become the first Neopian to grow broccoli trees and pineapple plants with little to no sunlight at all cost him the greatest thing that he ever had, his sweet spotted appearances.

     Names: Edna the Witch

     Age: Older than mouldy cheese

     Species: Zafara

Occupation: Deals in Magic Spells and Potions

Hopes to Be: A supermodel, as soon as she finds the right ingredients for that potion

Featured in: Edna’s Shadow (Games), Edna’s Quest (Questing)

Quote: "You wouldn't be mean to a helpless old woman, would you? *cackle*"

Edna is an old witch that had a hard time being one in the first place. She constantly tries to master her spells but most times, her magic backfires on her. Looking back, she even managed to turn five innocents Meercas into one delicious pie when she was trying to harmlessly remove their tails. Alas, all these misshapes never deterred her from attempting to master her spells. Also, if you have time, remember to visit her in her famous domain! At the Witch’s Tower she gives out quests and, if you are lucky, you can even nab a wicked-looking cackling avatar.

     Name: Mrs. Prenderghast

Species: Aisha (USED to be, but that was quite a long time ago)

Hobbies: Collecting art and going for long, slow walks through her enormous estate.

One Day Hopes: People will stop trying to steal her art collection, so she can finally rest in peace.

     Featured in: Collectable Cards (Collections)

Quote: "Oh, this one? It is a portrait of my uncle Leio... he was a hero in the war, you know. Nice, isn't it?"

Prenderghast might not be as well known since she is an old cranky spirit who isn’t too fond of visitors. Especially those who have no intention of keeping their hands or paws to themselves and off of her valuable art collection. Her abhorrence for curious thrill-seekers and greedy art collectors have caused her to become a quite malicious ghost...

     Name: Eliv Thade

     Species: Kacheek

Occupation: Puzzle Writer (Author of Grimoire of Thade)

     Hobbies: Solving puzzles/anagrams

Featured in: The Castle of Eliv Thade (Games)

Quote: "Everything is a game. A vile, evil, delightful game”

One of the more disreputable undead characters of Haunted Wood, the ghost of Eliv Thade is well known to have a fixation with anagrams. It can be said that he lives for anagrams first and foremost, other things are beneath him. During his lifetime, he prided himself as a puzzle genius... until that one faithful day. His servant brought him the longest most complicated puzzle he had ever seen in his life. His obsession with solving this puzzle tormented him until ultimately, he descended into insanity. It is said even his book has caused some to succumb to madness...

     Name: Esophagor

     Pronunciation: (ee-soff-a-gore)

     Location: Haunted Woods

     Gender: Male

Featured in: The Esophagor (Questing), Neoquest II (Games)

Interests: Eating, pointless trivia that only interests the Brain Tree

Quote: "II AMMM HUNGGRRYYY..... feeed mmeee annndd I wwilll reeewwaardd yoouu...."

The Esophagor is often held accountable for the many disappearances that occur in Haunted Wood due to his infamous appetite. He may lack the conniving brain power compared to other villains who hailed from the same land such as Hubrid Nox, however, it does not mean that he is harmless. Most people are encouraged to do quests for him as often as possible to The Esophagor from going berserk due to hunger. After all, he is always hungry for food. The Esophagor also made a brief appearance in Neoquest II by refusing to allow Rohane and his party to get through Edna’s Tower. Owing to that, he is the final boss of the fourth chapter, the Haunted Woods.

So, there you have it, A truly wonderful Halloween Special about the most notable characters in Haunted Woods. There are many more characters who hail from the Haunted Woods. However, I only able to highlight probably a small portion of them for sake of Halloween. Plus, I hope that you enjoyed reading this article and have a very eventful Halloween holiday. Go carve some pumpkins and have a blast trick-or-treating now!
