Avatar Guide: Mutant Graveyard of Doom II

by hectic_haley

--------

At the end of year 6, we saw the demise of a classic game: Mutant Graveyard of Doom. However, its sequel, Mutant Graveyard of Doom II more than makes up for the void left behind. Not only is it a fun and festive spooky game, but it awards an avatar for reaching 2,250 points (or more)! Before we begin, I would like to give you a little insight into the main character. After all, in order to be an expert at the game, you must be one with the character you control. Our main character, Albert, was once a spotted Kacheek. He had ambitious plans to become the BEST gardener in all of Neopia. Unfortunately, his ambitions were put on hold when the Esophagor cursed him into a mutant Kacheek. Now Albert spends his time gathering spooky foods for his master while trying to avoid the terrors within the Haunted Woods.

How to Play

The fundamentals of playing Mutant Graveyard of Doom II are fairly simple. In fact, patience is the one thing you really need to attain the avatar score of 2,250 points or more. To control Albert as he wanders through the graveyard, you will use the arrow keys. To push over certain objects (primarily blank tombstones), use the space bar. Albert will pick up the items scattered throughout the level by walking over them. Note: not every item is necessary to advance, though they are all worth the same amount of points.

At the top of your screen, there is a list of items needed to collect. The faded items are the ones you have left to collect; if the item is fully opaque, Albert has already picked it up. In this game, your light source is your health bar. Anytime Albert is damaged, the lantern will dim. If the lantern is extinguished, you’ll lose a life. It’s difficult to see enemies when your light source is dim, so it’s vital to keep your health up. You lose health by running into enemies, or picking up a specific item (see below). In this game, you have three lives to spare, but you cannot attain any extra lives. Unfortunately, Albert has the gentle personality of a farmer and really doesn’t have a knack for fighting. When you stumble across a foe you can run away or attempt to crush it with a moveable tombstone. For the majority of the game, you may only knock over blank tombstones.

Foods for the Esophagor (10 points)

Bloody Ghost Toast

Eye Candy

Ghost Marshmallows

Deviled Steak

Vanilla Ghost Cake

Bonus Items (10 points)

Slows Albert’s speed

I would try to avoid this one if you can as it only hurts your ability to evade enemies. If you’re just going for the avatar score, you really don’t need the extra 10 points this item gives you.

Increases Albert’s speed

Increases Albert’s light source and makes your field of vision wider.

Decreases Albert’s health and can kill him if his lantern is low enough.

Avoid at all costs because your light source is vital. If you’re just going for the avatar score, you really don’t need the extra 10 points this item gives you.

Scoring

Scoring in Mutant Graveyard of Doom II is very simple, there are only two ways to do it. The first way to earn points is by picking up items. Each item, good or bad, is worth 10 points. The second way to earn points is by crushing enemies with tombstones. Each enemy crushed is worth 50 points. It should be noted, enemies do not respawn if Albert loses a life. The majority of the points you will score in this game are from crushing enemies, so it is important that you try to crush as many as possible before moving on to the next level. To crush an enemy they need to be directly in front of a pushable tombstone.

Enemies and Strategy

If you’re aiming to score well in this game, I advise against collecting every item at the very beginning of the game. Once you have collected every item you will move on to the next level. It is important that you take the time to beat enemies and earn as many points off of them as possible. To crush an enemy, position yourself on the opposite side of a pushable tombstone and wait for them to walk by. Unfortunately, enemies move can move with no rhyme or reason, so you will have to be patient and wait them out. There are four types of enemies in the game to watch out for; Chumablahs, Jowlards, Ghostkerchiefs and Halloween Rock (pictured in order).

Chumablahs and Jowlards are easy enemies to defeat because they walk around aimlessly. You can usually notice a pattern, where they walk in a straight or circular path, and in a forward direction. However, Ghostkerchiefs can move through tombstones and terrain and their movements are more random. They walk backward, forwards, circular, and straight. If you try to crush a Ghostkerchief as it passes through a tombstone, you will be able to crush it. The Halloween rock will pretend to look like a regular tombstone. Avoid bumping into one or you will lose your life. When he does move, he is quite slow. I find he can be the most time-consuming to defeat because of his movements. When defeating enemies, I advise dealing with the Ghostkerchiefs and Halloween Rocks before moving onto easier foes, however, it is not necessary to go out of your way and do so.

Before you begin, it’s good to know that there is no time limit in this game. You can take as much time as necessary to defeat all the enemies. However, as you progress through levels the enemies will become better at seeking out Albert and you may come across levels with fewer tombstones to spare. If you play this game following this guide and defeating every enemy, you will have enough for the avatar score once you clear level five.
