A Weewoo's Delivery Day

by maddie_bangz

--------

The crisp smell of ink and paper filled the air as another morning at the Neopian Times office began. Neopets rushed around, sipping their coffees and skimming their notepads, mentally taking note of fresh ideas to use for the latest issue. Every day at the Neopian Times office was an exciting one, especially on publishing day. The team had worked their hardest to put this issue together, especially considering this wasn’t just any issue. This was a milestone issue, #1025. The office was abuzz with excitement and anticipation as the writers wondered how Neopia would react to their hard work.

The White Weewoo came gliding into the room, taking in the sight of the morning’s chaos. He grinned at the stack of fresh newspapers hot off the press, ready to be delivered to Neopian residents around the world. He felt a flurry of activity behind him and looked to see other White Weewoos reporting for duty as they came to rest on windowsills and open table spaces. They gave each other amicable looks as they anxiously waited for the official signal. A well-known editor of the Times was busy looking over the stacks of papers as more were ushered into the room.

The White Weewoo leaned forward excitedly as the editor held a thumbs-up towards the ceiling. Immediately, the Weewoos dashed for the newspapers. Each pile had smaller stacks of newspapers tied together with twine, a neat little bow on top. The Weewoos used their feet to grab the stacks and soared back out into the open sky, delivering these historic pieces of journalism in record times. The White Weewoo grabbed his own stack and took off towards Neopia Central, his assigned location for this issue.

It was a clear and beautiful day as the Weewoo soared through the sky towards his destination. He took his time appreciating the sights, the lush trees covering the landscape, and the Neopets walking about the shops below. They smiled and waved to the Weewoo as he flew overhead, preparing for his first drop-off.

He slowly began his descent towards the Grooming Parlour in the Bazaar. As he landed softly on the open windowsill, he used his beak to pull out one of the copies from the stack and leaned his head into the room. The Usul who runs the Grooming Parlour looked up from her magazine at the front desk.

“Yay, you’re here!” She squealed, jumping up from her desk and running over to the window. She took the newspaper from the Weewoo’s beak and started thumbing through the pages.

“Oohh, and it’s a milestone issue! Thank you so much!” She called back over her shoulder as she hurried back to her desk and began reading the articles on the front page. The White Weewoo quickly took off back into the air to begin his next delivery. He was making great time today, to the delight of all of the Neopians in their shops eager to get the day’s issue. When he was down to the very last newspaper in his stack and heading towards the Petpet Shop, he heard tiny voices yelling up to him.

     “Look! It’s a White Weewoo!”

He looked below him and saw a whole pack of Petpets scurrying around the backyard enclosure at the Petpet Shop. An Angelpuss was jumping up and down, nearly knocking a Doglefox over as she yelled for the other Petpets to look up. The White Weewoo slowly floated down towards the Petpets and settled on the fence post surrounding the yard. The group all huddled beneath him, yelling questions and voicing their excitement. The White Weewoo checked to make sure no Neopets were around to hear them, then grinned.

     “Hey everyone!” He called.

“Mr. Weewoo!” A young Puppyblew called. “Are you delivering all the Neopian Times issues today?”

“Ugh of COURSE he is! What kind of question is that?” A Kadoatie yelled and rolled her eyes, feigning nonchalance. The Weewoo could tell the rest of the Petpets were eagerly awaiting his response though.

“Well, I’m not delivering all of them! Do you know how many Neopian Times newspapers are printed for each issue? It would take weeks for me to deliver all of them by myself!” He laughed.

“So who delivers them all?” A Poppit questioned.

“All the White Weewoos try to help out! We get assigned different places around Neopia to deliver the papers, and they’re different every time.”

“Even the scary places? Like the Haunted Woods?” A Snorkle squeaked anxiously. The other Petpets whispered nervously at the mention of this spooky location. The White Weewoo smiled.

“Of course, everyone in Neopia loves the Neopian Times! Even residents in the Haunted Woods. You just have to be careful and watch out for ghosts because they love stealing newspapers if you don’t pay attention. And of course, the Pant Devil is always looking to add issues to his collection of stolen goods too! That’s why I carry a couple of extras every time I travel there.”

The Petpets all nodded in unison.

“What about Kreludor? Or the Virtupets Space Station? Can you fly high enough to deliver newspapers there?” A Kookith piped up, jumping amongst the little crowd to have its voice heard.

“Of course I can! I do need help though so my wings don’t get tired. Usually, the special deliveries for space come with space suits to protect us, and we even get Zoomik partners to help us get there in record times.”

“Wow, you get to go all the way to space! That’s so cool!” A Mallard gushed.

“That’s not even the best place!” The White Weewoo exclaimed, and the surrounding Petpets crowded even closer to take in his every word. Some of the Petpets were using the others as pedestals, all of them eager to get as close as possible to the captivating Weewoo.

“Where’s your favourite place to go?” A Hasee asked.

“I don’t know if I can pick just one…” The Weewoo pondered the question. “I get to see the beautiful sights at Faerieland, enjoy delicious cold treats at Terror Mountain, and even swim with the creatures in Maraqua… after I put on my diving suit of course!”

“That sounds like a dream.” The same Hasee sighed longingly.

“It’s the best job in the world, I- oops! Gotta run!” The White Weewoo frantically took off back into the sky as the back door to the Neopian Petpet Shop swung upon and the young Usul Shopkeeper stepped outside. The Petpets in the yard began barking, squawking, meowing, and growling their goodbyes as the Weewoo flew overhead.

“Hey, wait!” The Usul called. “What about my newspaper?”

The Weewoo screeched to a stop and looked back down. He had forgotten about the single newspaper left in his stack. He quickly dove back down towards the building and chirped a friendly goodbye as he dropped the final milestone issue into the Usul’s outstretched hands.

“Thanks!” She called excitedly as she plopped onto the grass and began to read. The Petpets all crowded around her, trying to get a glimpse at the latest issue. The Weewoo smiled as he took off into the sky once again, already thinking about how excited he was to deliver the next issue of the Neopian Times.

     The End.
