History of the Lost Desert

by sparkleeze

--------

Not much of the history of the Lost Desert was scientifically recovered, but Neopians can get an idea of how it all started. Many Neopians question, "How does a desert that is so hot and dry, have a stream running right through it?" Well, perhaps the Lost Desert wasn't always a desert. Let’s take a trip back in time, thousands of years ago to when no Neopian knew that the Lost Desert existed.

Glaciers... Almost the whole entire surface of Neopia was covered with glaciers.

Overtime, the glaciers moved by being pushed and eventually moved to a warm enough spot that it melted. As the bottom layers of ice melted, it became water; the top layer of ice was moving even faster and was bobbing on the water. Then, pulling the sand and rocks with it, the melting glacier slows down, carrying more than it can handle. The glacier drops the some particles and starts moving again.

Now suppose the melted glacier was carrying a big rock, that is so heavy, that it could only drag it across the ground, making one long river with no water in it. For example, when you take a stick, and drag one end on the ground going in a straight line, you can see where you dragged it. Pretend you were dragging a rock instead of a stick; you would make a river, with no water in it, in the ground.

When the water finally moved over the place where the empty river in was made, all the space in it is now filled with water all the way out to the ocean. That's where all the water from the melted glacier flowed into. All the water out of the stream dried up, so that it made a hot, windy, dry land. Now you have a desert. Eventually, ancient Neopets built civilizations and lived in the desert because of the rare stream flowing through it, making life able to live there. Even in the driest times, because water could always flow threw it from the ocean.

Most Neopians also wonder, “What about the statue that looks like a desert Acara, wearing a mask? Where did that come from, or even the idea?" Remember when I said the place where the glacier moved over, was now hot, and windy? All the rocks it dropped were now everywhere too. Neopians predicted that the wind blew the sand particles so hard, that it felt like you were being attacked by tiny arrows and could carve rocks. When the wind blew one way it removed some of the rocks surface and over time, it eventually looked somewhat like a desert Acara. Neopians passing by or living in the area noticed the rock and were inspired to finish making the statue. All the other rocks may have been also carved by Neopians to make buildings, and pyramids into cities we now know as Sakhmet and Qasala! One famous Neopet called King Coltzan III was a noble defender of the Lost Desert. Here is some history of him.

King Coltzan III was a brave and just warrior who governed the Lost Desert with a kind heart and generous soul for many years. His legendary status as a noble defender of the Lost Desert grew as the tales of his heroic deeds spread throughout the land. There isn't a single Sakhmetian alive who has not heard the tale of how Coltzan defeated a savage Monocerous with his bare paws, or of the time Coltzan rescued Princess Lightfoot from the clutches of the nefarious Baron Nehlaki, a story which is recounted in Sakhmet Tales, a popular anthology of Sakhmetian folklore.

"Alone in the darkness, Coltzan waited as he planned his next move. With the dark tower looming ominously before him, the warrior king saw a swarm of hungry Scorchios circling in the night sky. Off in the distance, a sand storm was rapidly cutting its way across the open plain. It was a risky proposition; Coltzan figured that if he could time it right, then he could use the dust cloud for cover until he reached the tower's gates.

Staying as close to the whirling sand as he could, Coltzan saw that his chance had arrived. As he strained with all his might, the king swiftly raced under the cover of the swirling sand. As they bickered among themselves, the evil Scorchios failed to notice the shadowy figure beneath them. Breathless, Coltzan slumped against the cold stone walls of the tower. Now, he just had to figure out a way to get inside...."

Despite the king's demise in Year 3, the many tales of his courage will carry on his name and allow his brave spirit to live on as a shining example to future generations. A shrine was built in King Coltzan's honour, out in the desert that he loved. Although its purpose was to allow visitors to pay their respects, many reported seeing visions of the ghostly king and even finding strange and wonderful treasures hidden in the dunes around the obelisk, as though even in death King Coltzan had found a way to help the deserving. Those saddened by the king's passing need only remember what Coltzan himself said as he defiantly faced the wrath of the dreaded Sand Hydra of Khaef: "I shall cower before no evil, and defend the virtue of my people against all enemies. Regardless of the outcome, at least I know that I have fought for a most noble cause."
