Krawks - Elusive Holders of the Wooden Spoon

by starry__night__sky

--------

Krawks have the odd, but distinguished, honor of being the recipients of the Wooden Spoon award. What’s that mean? Well, a wooden spoon is a mock award for a competitor who comes last in a competition. In this case, Krawks are the least populous neopet, clocking in at only 2, 330 in all of Neopia, according to the Pet Stats page. You’ll have to do a little scrolling to see them all the way at the bottom; they rank in at number 54. They come in a wide variety of colors (Blue, Brown, Checkered, Cloud, Darigan, Disco, Electric, Faerie, Fire, Ghost, Green, Grey, Halloween, Island, Maraquan, Mutant, Orange, Pink, Pirate, Plushie, Purple, Rainbow, Red, Royal, Shadow, Skunk, Speckled, Spotted, Starry, Tyrannian, White, and Yellow—phew, quite a list!) and are the namesake of Krawk Island. (Though ironically, the petpets are not sold there.)

Beyond those simple facts, Krawks are quite a mystery. Krawks can never be created the normal way; they’re a “restricted” pet, making them even rarer than “limited edition” pets, which are released at certain points throughout the year. Their rarity makes them a popular goal for users; just owning one will give you quite a bit of prestige, and owning a Krawk is required for a rare avatar to boot. So if you’re looking to acquire one for yourself, you’ve taken a good first step by reading this article. Let’s take a look at how to get one of these great pets.

Fungus Cave

First we’ll start with the most traditional way. If you attach a Krawk petpet to one of your current pets and visit the hidden Fungus Cave, you’ll be able to turn it into a full-grown pet. Don’t forget, if you have the maximum number of pets (4) you won’t get this option! (If you do have four pets already, don’t worry; you can still get a Krawk pet; just skip down to the options later in the article to find out how.) You’ll also have to rename your Krawk petpet to something that is not already taken by another neopet before you’ll be able to turn it into one. You can check availability by typing the name into the sidebar and seeing if any pets are currently named that. To change your petpet's name, go to your quick reference page (available by clicking on your pet's name in the top right corner of any neopets web page) and click on your petpet. Fill in the petpet name box with your choice.

There are a few ways to purchase a Krawk petpet. They restock at the Tyrannian petpet shop, but don’t expect to see one there very often. They’re extremely rare and other restockers will be clawing to get them as well. Your best bet is to purchase one from the Trading Post or Auction House. Since they’re so highly priced above 100, 000 NP and are extremely sought after by experienced players, it’s exceedingly doubtful that you’ll be able to find one on the Shop Wizard. An unpainted Krawk sells for about 4.4 million neopoints, so if you’re buying one from the Trading Post, you’ll have to use a combination of neopoints and items, since the max number of pure neopoints you can offer on a trade is 800, 000. This makes your best option the Auction House, though you could always neomail a user selling one on the TP and asking them to set up a private auction for you at the price you two settle on. Also keep in mind that whatever color the Krawk petpet is, that’s the kind of Krawk it will turn into when it “grows up”. The petpets are available in Blue, Pink, Faerie, Cloud, Brown, Halloween, Red, Yellow, and Plushie. (And of course, the default unpainted color of green. Note that it may be hard to find a painted Krawk petpet considering their rarity, and that the price will be higher for a painted one. The rarer the color, the higher the price.)

Oh, and if you’re looking for the Fungus Cave, you might want to visit Krawk Island. Still can’t find it? Look a little closer... you should see something that would hint at a cave full of fungus.

One last word of caution: the petpet lab ray can turn a petpet into a Krawk, but you will not be able to turn it into a full grown Krawk and if you unattach it, it will revert back to its original species and color.

Magical Plushies

You may have heard of magical plushies before. They look like perfectly normal plushies, but have “magical” at the beginning of their item name. When a pet plays with one, they are transformed into a pet of the same color and species as the plushie. The plushie loses its magical properties at the same time and becomes a regular item. Since the toy transforms one of your current pets, you can get a Krawk through this method even if you already have four pets. Four different Magical Krawk Plushies are available: Green, Red, Yellow, and Blue. They restock at the Plushie Shop, but again, are extremely rare and it’s doubtful you’ll be able to restock one. They’re also unbuyable, so you’ll waste a lot of time if you try looking on the Shop Wizard. Search at the Auction House or Trading Post if you want to take this route, but keep in mind you may not be able to find one at any given time and they’ll fetch a pretty penny... er... neopoint.

Morphing Potions

Morphing potions come in a wide variety of colors and species. When you feed one to your pet, it becomes the color and species of the potion. (Keep in mind that the item disappears afterwards!) Since one of your existing pets undergoes the transformation, this is another option for users who already have the maximum number of pets. Four different kinds are available for Krawks: Blue, Red, Yellow, and Transmogrification, which will turn your pet into a Mutant version of a Krawk. Morphing Potions restock at the magical shop run by Kauvara, but again, many other users will be trying to buy any Krawk Morphing Potions that appear, so don’t count on restocking one yourself. Luckily, Morphing Potions are much more likely to be available at the Trading Post and Auction House than Magical Plushies or the actual Krawk petpet. The Transmogrification potion is the cheapest way to get a Krawk at about 2.5 million neopoints, while the other colors will be priced at around 3 million and above. The Mutant appearance may make you less inclined to take the cheapest route, but keep in mind you can always paint your new Krawk later.

The Lab Ray

I’ve left this option to last because it’s the most unreliable method for getting a Krawk pet. If you’re wondering what exactly the lab ray is, it’s attained by getting all nine pieces of the Secret Laboratory Map (NOTE: NOT pieces of the petpet version!). Once a user has all nine pieces, they can go to the Treasure Maps game in the games room and put the whole thing together. They will then have access to the lab ray. The different pieces vary a lot in price, but a whole set will put you back around 600, 000 - 700, 000 neopoints. Buying the pieces individually from shops is the cheapest way to get all nine, but you can find entire sets on the Trading Post. (If you’re curious, the pieces are given out randomly to users through random events; they’re not restocked at shops.) Once a user has access to the ray, they can zap one of their pets once a day. It can raise and lower stats, change a pet's color and gender, and it has about a 5% chance of changing a pet’s species. So, there is a possibility that your pet can get turned into a Krawk, but keep in mind there are over 50 species of neopets! The chances of it turning your pet into a Krawk any time soon are very slim.

Well, that’s all the options you’ve got for getting yourself your very own Krawk pet. I wish you luck in your venture to own the elusive winner of the wooden spoon award!

Feel free to neomail me if you have any other questions, but do try to be polite and limit the chat speak.
