Top 10 Strange but Somehow Adorable Petpets

by niightwind

--------

Petpets - the beloved friends of our Neopets. Some of them the majority of Neopians would likely agree are adorable, like the Snowbunny and the Kadoatie. But what about some of the... stranger ones? The ones that aren't quite as "d'aww" inducing, but are still lovable? This list is in honor of them, the weird but oddly adorable Petpets that might get overlooked at first glance.

10) Charnie

"Yikes! Look at those teeth! And what is that horrible sound that thing is making?!"

Is the above statement similar to your initial reaction to the Charnia? This Petpet might not be at the top of everyone's "want to adopt" list. Big teeth, a scowl on it's face, and it doesn't look like it'd be too good at a game of fetch. But the longer I look at the Charnie, the more I can see it's appeal. Maybe a little love and attention would clear that scowl right up! And the horrible noise it keeps making? That's just the Charnie's way of saying it wants to play.

9) Woolypapith

With a spiky tail and spikes along its back to match, topped up with a set of tusks and a loud trumpeting sound to let you know it's around, the Woolypapith might actually seem like a dangerous Petpet to have around! Those spikes might make it a bit difficult to pet and give affection to. And if those features didn't already have you saying "yikes", look at that wrinkly face it has. But what if you were to pair this Petpet up with one of the more hardy Neopets, perhaps one of the Darigan variety? It could be the perfect match! And that wrinkled up face might even curve up into a smile with the right care.

8) Snarhook

The Snarhook is a strange looking Neopet, with its short stubby arms and long hook of a nose. It's plumpish body rests down on top of its feet, succeeding in making this Petpet one of the most awkward in appearance. But at the same time, it's hard to deny that the Snarhook has some sort of cuteness to it, as well. Who knows, maybe it could even help you and your Neopet carry smaller items with that long nose!

7) Bilguss

"Well... what exactly is it? A blob? A pin cushion?"

The Bilguss is a difficult petpet to place. In fact, if you didn't see the face, you might mistake this poor little guy for a pin cushion! It never seems to smile, and the mystery of it's permanent frown is yet to be solved. But how can you NOT want to cheer up this sad, strange Petpet? Just like the Charnie, maybe it just needs a little bit of attention to help it feel better.

6) Mortog

Best known for their "explosive" personality in Kiss the Mortog, this Petpet is unfortunately not seen as often as I wish it was outside of the game located in Meridell - perhaps because so many people choose the wrong Mortog! But, exploding aside, they are pretty cute, despite their sliminess and their warts. Maybe your Quiggle or Nimmo would enjoy the company of this Petpet. Just make sure they don't make the mistake of kissing their new friend!

5) Furwitch

I so rarely see the Furwitch around in my travels through Neopia, which is such a pity! Fluffy green puff balls (before they're painted, of course) with tiny little feet and a pointy hat to match their name, I'd consider this Petpet one of the most underrated. They might not win first place in any beauty contests, but imagine one of these cuties racing around your Neopet, begging for treats! The perfect companion for a Halloween or other spooky-loving Neopet.

4) Rock

Initial reaction: It's a rock. Why would I want a pet rock?

The vague expression, lack of arms and legs, and the high price of the Rock might make you wonder why in Neopia anyone would want to give their Neopet a pet Rock. The reasons are endless though, really! They're easy to care for (aside from polishing and the occasional need for a bath), make a great paper weight, come in lots of different colors, and they're even easy for younger Neopets to draw. They never interrupt, so they're great listeners, too.

3) Quadrapus

The caption on the avatar this Petpet is featured on pretty much sums it up - durp! But there's just something so endearing about it. Maybe you should consider bringing one along to your next Gormball competition; I hear that they're surprisingly good at it!

2) Gwortz

The first time I saw a Gwortz all I could do was stare at it, wondering what exactly my opinion on this Petpet is. After a while I finally came to the conclusion that it is pretty cute! The Gwortz are a strange looking petpet - they almost seem to resemble a cross between a Faerie and a Mutant. Their eyes are on stalks, so that they can look around in all directions while standing still. Now that's a useful ability if you ask me.

1) Slorg

The number one most strange but adorable Petpet is, of course, the Slorg! These guys are everywhere - on avatars, featured in a ton of Neopian items, TCG cards, plushies, and Usuki Sets, in games, handing out Neopoints... it's hard not to run into one, really. They come in a multitude of colors, so if you don't like the default green Slorg you're bound to find one that appeals to. I like the Purple Slorg best, personally! They're a bit like Quadrapus in their obvious "durp" factor. What makes these grinning Petpet so popular? I don't know, but they're so cute despite their sliminess that I wouldn't have it any other way.

Special mentions: Triffin, Walking Carpet, Narwhool, and Sludgy!

And there you have it - a list of some of the Petpets that may be strange, but have a certain appeal to them that just can't be denied. Is your Neopet a little bit quirky like these Petpets too? Maybe one of these would be the perfect fit!
