Top 10 Signs you are Addicted to Neopets.com

by hottendott

--------

Neopets has something for everyone. Whether you enjoy chatting with people from all over the world on the boards, customizing your pets, or testing your strength in the Battledome, you will always have something to do! It can be very easy to get sucked into the world of Neopia…This is where this article comes into play.

1: Pulling a Neopets all-nighter: One of my favourite Neopets memories was obsessively playing Faerie Bubbles for the avatar. I simply had to have it for my avatar collection and I played for hours on end. One night I got really into the zone and did not stop until I finally got the score needed in the wee hours of the morning. Shortly after, the Fountain Faerie decided to grant me a visit. I was overjoyed! I think it's safe to say that if you are willing to stay up all night in order to reach your goal, big or small, you are at the very least a very dedicated player!

2: Misspells, acronyms, and mixing up your words: Have you ever told your co-worker to neomail you instead of emailing? Or even gone to the grocery store to buy “neggs”? How about the word “Darigan” popping up in the predictive text on your phone? You are probably not alone. To add to this, Neopets has a long tradition of using British English spelling rather than American, which can add to the confusion for some. For me, spelling faerie as “fairy” just seems weird at this point.

3: Your pet's closet is more expensive than your own: It is time to admit it, I am very much guilty of this one. My Neopets are all pretty spoiled. I love adding to my NC collection and there are always new items coming to the NC Mall that my pets simply just MUST have. Trust me, it is very hard to say no to a cute little Kacheek that wants a new dress… as a fellow Neopian, you probably understand.

4: You don't miss a day if you can help it: It is not often I miss a day of at least logging into my account to do my dailies (can’t miss that Trudy’s spin!), check my Neomails and just to see what is new in Neopia. When I do miss a day sometimes, it always feels like something is missing and I can't help but have the feeling that I might miss out on something like finally getting a Plushie Paint Brush from the Fruit Machine or finding a rare stamp in the Faerie Caverns. You never know when an awesome new pet colour will be released or an exciting new event has started! It does not help that some avatars and other event prizes are time-sensitive, too. The expression FOMO (fear of missing out) very much applies here.

5: You celebrate your pet's birthday and special pet days: One of the biggest highlights for me during the year is Poogle Parade. What if this will be the year we will finally see a Chocolate Poogle? A lot of people will also celebrate and spoil their pets extra on their birthday, which is a really sweet tradition, if you ask me. Every pet deserves to be pampered. Maybe they will get something yummy to eat or get to wear a fancy birthday-themed customization, or get taken to the Ferris Wheel on Mystery Island… or perhaps even get treated to a fancy dinner at a restaurant like Kelp. All fun stuff!

6 You have a collection of Neopets Merchandise: During the years, there have been a lot of different merchandise released showcasing Neopets and different Neopian characters, ranging from plushies to video games. Personally, I especially love my collection of Key Quest plushies. Recently there have been some very nice pins and jewellery released into the market by Geekify and What's Your Passion, respectively. I’m actually currently wearing a bracelet with an MSPP charm on it!

7: You are always actively working on a goal: Working towards goals is one of the many things I really love about Neopets. It can give you a great sense of satisfaction to finally get the dream pet you have been yearning for since childhood, to earn more game trophies, collect avatars, stamps, or whatever your Neopian hobby entails! I have always had goals that I have worked towards. Personally, it has mostly been obtaining dream pets, adding to my Poogle gallery and earning new avatars. I have also gotten into stamp collecting, which has been a lot of fun. There are so many things you can work towards that you should never be short of goals to accomplish!

8: You can answer difficult Neopets trivia questions: If you are one of those people that thinks answering today's Daily Puzzle question is a breeze, then you might be able to relate to this one. This can be anything from questions about characters, prior plots/events, and even how different aspects of the site work. That being said, even after having played since 2005, I still learn new things and find new things to do.

     9. Your browser history is all Neopets pages: Do you ever open up your browser history and realize that pretty much all you do is play Neopets? Yup… If I need to find a recipe that I looked up yesterday or a guide on how to do some kind of household project, I need to dig through pages and pages of Neopian shops I visited, boards I posted on, and dailies that I completed.

     10. Your Neofriends are like family: I’ve made some really great friends in Neopia over the years through joining awesome guilds, participating in things like roleplaying (yes, I’m a nerd, I know), and trading pets on the PC. My Neofriends have been there throughout all kinds of things, good and bad, and I know I can count on them. Last year for my birthday, they all pitched in to buy me a White Paint Brush for my Aisha and a matching petpet. That’s just the tip of the iceberg… I’m so so lucky to have them in my life.

In what ways do you show your dedication to Neopets and your account? Can you relate to any of the signs I listed above? Or maybe I missed some things that you feel should have made it into my list? Either way, I hope you enjoyed this little article. Always remember to have fun and to not always take things too seriously while in Neopia! Be kind to each other and make new friends. To me, that is what makes Neopets such a fun community to be a part of.
