Varwolf Care 101

by hamster_wolf

--------

So you’re the owner of a brand new Varwolf, congratulations! The Varwolf is the 56th species of Neopet, newly discovered in Year 27. These fierce-looking Pets come from the Haunted Woods, but they’re not scary at all! In this article, you’ll discover some tips for keeping your Varwolf the happiest they can be.

     1. Food

Varwolves are are foragers, and they love to eat just about anything they can get their paws on. Unlike other Pets (besides those Alien Aishas), Varwolves love Gross Food and will happily scarf down a helping of Chocolate Liver Casserole or Grubs n Cheese alongside their dinner of Chicken Filets With Fancy Sauce. While Skeiths and Grarrls are known to eat anything and everything, they can’t hold a candle to the Varwolf’s iron stomach.

Thankfully, this means feeding them is super simple! A look through your Safety Deposit Box will probably turn up some mouldy goodies for your Varwolf to enjoy. Of course, they’ll still be happy to eat things like Cinnamon Oatmeal or a simple Cheese Pizza, but having a Varwolf around means you don’t have to worry about spending too many Neopoints to let your Pets enjoy a delicious meal. Just make sure to keep plenty of breath mints on hand for them!

          2. Toys & Games

You’ll want to make sure any toys you get for your Varwolf will keep them active and let them hunt and forage! Something like a Ghostkerchief Bouncy Ball is a great first toy, as it lets them chase it all around your Neohome. Pull along toys, like a Pull Along Snowbunny, Blobikins Pull Along Toy, or Dofrey Pull Along Toy are another great way to interact with your Pet and get the both of you moving, if you don’t mind them chasing you! Flying Discs are another great way to get your Varwolf up and moving, and they might enjoy designs like the Haunted Woods Flying Disc, Droolik Flying Disc, and the Target Flying Disc.

And while it’s made with Gelerts in mind, your Varwolf will probably love having a Gelert Squeaky Bone to chew on and keep their fangs nice and sharp. Even something like a Tyrannian Bone or a Cherry Wish Stick can be turned into a toy and chewed on. Just make sure to mind your slippers and shoes!

Kacheek Seek is another great way to keep your Varwolf on the hunt, and their ability to change their fur’s colours makes them extremely good at hiding (as all of Neopia can tell).

          3. Grooming

The most distinct features of a Varwolf are its fluffy mane around its neck, and its big sabre teeth. Keeping both of these in top shape is very important for Varwolves! You’ll want to keep an eye on the Grooming Parlour for Mane Conditioner, and Frizz Free Mane Cloth. You might even look into borrowing your Yurble’s Yurble Mane Curlers, if you own one. A Meowclops Hair Brush or Wilderness Hairbrush will be nice little reminders of home for your Varwolf to use. Since Varwolves are always running around those trees in the Haunted Woods, their fur can get tangled with sticks and covered in dirt, so keeping them well-groomed is essential!

For their teeth, make sure you can get your hands on a Fang Brush! They’re the best for keeping sharp fangs clean and minty fresh. Just make sure to remind your Varwolf to use mouthwash and floss!

          4. Books

Because Neovia is part of the Haunted Woods, Varwolves will probably be familiar with the Neovian Printing Press and their books. Since they’ll finally be journeying out of the Haunted Woods, your Varwolf is going to have lots to learn about the world outside! The Neovian Printing Press is famous for their travel brochures of distant lands, like their Tyrannia Travel Brochure, Maridell Travel Brochure, or Kiko Lake Travel Brochure. These are all great ways to help your Varwolf learn, and possibly pick out some travel destinations!

If your Varwolf is a bit younger, you might want to start them off with something familiar like A Collection Of Wanderer Tales, Chia Ghost Stories, or If You Give A Ghost A Pancake before introducing them to books like 1052 Sakhmetian Tales, Great Reefs of Neopia, or Notable Neopians.

          5. Wearables

Because Varwolves are so new to Neopia, they haven’t quite mastered the popular clothes and fashions that other Pets are into. Because of this, your Varwolf will mostly be limited to a Background, a Foreground, and any little trinkets they can get their paws on.

Some great backgrounds for them are Creepy Cave Background, Entrance To The Haunted Woods Background, or Crumbling Ancient Tower Background.

Foregrounds and trinkets you could add to your Varwolf include Dreary Foreground, Bramble Foreground, Inside The Cave Foreground, Pile Of Bones, Old Cobwebs Foreground, and Malevolent Tombstones.

          6. Activities

One of the great things about discovering a brand new species is being able to show them around the rest of Neopia! Your Varwolf will have a wonderful time exploring the land with you, and you can always have a sightseeing trip together. Why not go to Mystery Island and take your Varwolf to see the beach and Techo Mountain? And while icy mountains border the back of the Haunted Woods, your Varwolf will never have seen the Snowager, or met Mr. Chipper at the Ice Cream Cart. They wouldn’t have been around to see Faerieland while it was in the clouds, but now that it’s closer to the Haunted Woods, they can finally venture out and see it. And I’m sure the more adventurous Varwolves would love to visit the Space Station and Kreludor, or see what’s on the other side of the mountains behind the Haunted Woods and travel to Altador and Shenkuu.

Your Varwolf will also enjoy playing Gormball or NeoQuest together, and perhaps your Varwolf could even start their own collection of plushies or food for your gallery? There’s no limit to what the two of you can do together!

We’re still learning a lot about Varwolves, so there’s always more that can be said about how to care for them. But for now, we hope these tips help you and your Varwolf start off on the right paw!
