Snow Roller Trophy Guide by quiggles_r_kewl_1
--------
The game of Snow Roller came about in an interesting way. One cold day in Terror Mountain, the Snow Beast was trying to lay down for an afternoon nap. Just as he was starting to fall asleep though he was awaken by all the Terror Mountain residents frolicking around making way too much noise. To seek revenge and silence them once and for all, he sent out his fury minions to create an avalanche of snowballs to roll down Terror Mountain to literally crush the noisy residents!
The Basics
In the game of Snow Roller, you control a snowball that starts rolling down from the top of Terror Mountain. There are three levels in the game and each level has two stages. As the snowball rolls down the mountain, you must roll over numerous items while avoiding all the obstacles on the mountain. In order to move your snowball to pick up items or avoid obstacles, use the right arrow key to move to the right and the left arrow key to move to the left. You can also jump over obstacles by pressing the spacebar. Each item you collect with your snowball is worth a different amount of points, which I will explain later on in the guide.
As you roll down the hill, the snowball gets larger and larger, which is a good thing because with a wider snowball you can cover more area and pick up items more easily. In the top left hand corner of the screen is an item percentage bar. When you start a level, this percentage bar is around 5%. As you roll down the hill, the percentage bar continues to go up unless you hit an obstacle which will make it go down again by about 5% for every obstacle hit. Be careful to never let your item percentage bar hit 0% or else it is game over! The start of each level is the hardest because your percentage is so low to start out with and just hitting a couple obstacles at the start of a level will mean game over. So, remember to use those arrow keys to manoeuvre around the obstacles or use the space bar to jump over them. If you are planning on jumping over an obstacle, you need to press the space bar a little bit ahead of the obstacle you are trying to jump over or else you will not fully clear the obstacle. When your snowball gets pretty large, you can no longer move right or left to avoid an obstacle and you will have to use the space bar to jump over them.
Once you finish the first stage of a level, you get an option to choose one of three paths to get to the end of the level. You only get ten seconds to choose and you choose by pressing the corresponding arrow key. If you don't select in time, one will be chosen for you. Your snowball size and your item percentage will be the same as where you finished at with the first stage of the level. You want to reach the end of a level with the highest percentage you can, because your bonus points are dependent on it! I will explain scoring in the next section.
Items and Scoring
There are many items to roll over with your snowball to pick up points in this game. The great thing about this game is that it is surprisingly easy to figure out what objects on the screen are items to pick up and what objects are obstacles to avoid. All items that you want to pick up will have a little red arrow by them- convenient, isn't it! I will now list all the items in the game and how much points they are worth.
- Brucicles: 10 points each
- Chia Pops: 10 points each
- Mystery Island Heads: 10 points each
- Neggs: 10 points each
- Ordinary Slushies: 10 points each
- Abominable Snowballs: 20 points each
- Taelia Plushies: 20 points each
- Special Power-up Slushies: 30 points each
- Cybunnies: 40 points each
- Mika and Carassa: 40 points each
- Poogle Racers: 40 points each
There are two different special power-up slushies that you can pick up that are very helpful, even though each power-up lasts for a limited time. There is a Black Hole Slushie that looks white with a black hole in the middle of it. This power-up will make your snowball act like a black hole and suck up items towards it like a magnet. The other special slushie is the Super Traction Slushie which is a black-colored slushie. Collecting this slushie will make your snowball stickier and your snowball will increase in size quicker. When you collect either of these two special slushies, the word of what slushie you picked up will flash on screen. The power-up wears off when the word comes off the screen which normally takes a few seconds.
The points you get from collecting all these items is displayed at the top of the screen along with the item percentage bar and what level and stage you are on. Not only do you get points from items, but you also get bonus points at the end of each of the three levels. Your bonus points are calculated as follows: (item points) x ( item percentage). This is why I said earlier that you want to finish each level with the highest item percentage as possible. Preferably you want to finish each level with your item percentage at 100% to get the highest amount of bonus points as possible. So, your final point total at the end of each level is: (item points) + (bonus points). Then your end of game point total is your point total from each of the 3 levels combined. Those bonus points really can add a lot to your score and are really just as important as collecting item points! If you want to get a trophy in this game, you really need to collect as many bonus points as possible and roll over the most items!
The Obstacles
There are numerous different obstacles on Terror Mountain that you must try to avoid as you roll down the hill collecting items. It is important to hit as few obstacles as possible because anytime you do hit an obstacle your item percentage will go down and if it ever hits 0%, it is game over! To avoid the obstacles you can either use your right and left arrow keys to swerve out of the way or you must jump completely over the obstacle by pressing the space bar. Early on in a level, when your snowball is small, it is fairly easy to just use your arrow keys to move out of the way of small obstacles. However, for the large and wide obstacles and also when your snowball gets really big later on in a level the only thing you can do to avoid the obstacle is by jumping over it. Jumping over obstacles really isn't as easy as it may sound. You need to time it properly. You can't press the space bar at the last second and expect to jump clearly over the obstacle. However, you also don't want to press it too early and end up landing right on top of the obstacle. A good rule of thumb is to jump when your snowball is about an inch away from the obstacle. Sometimes you have to make multiple jumps in a row to avoid objects and it is hard to stick to that rule, but all you can do is try your best. I will list the types of obstacles below and the best method to avoid hitting each obstacle.
Wooden Log: It is definitely best to just jump over these since they are low to the ground and easy to clear. Ice Block: Again these short, wide obstacles are easiest to clear by jumping over them. Rocks: The rocks come in different sizes. For the little ones you can swerve to avoid them in the beginning of a level when your snowball is still small, otherwise just jump over them. Grass Patches: These are small obstacles that can be easy to round around in the early stages of a level when your snowball is small, otherwise just jump over them. Fires: These are very small and when your snowball is small to medium size it is easier to just move around these, otherwise you can jump over them.
Yellow Patches: It is definitely best to jump over these patches since they are wide and hard to swerve around.
Ice Patches: It is definitely best to jump over these patches since they are too wide to move around them. In my opinion these are the worst obstacles to hit because they make your snowball skid and you have a hard time controlling the snowball for a few seconds. Try your best to never hit an ice patch! Icicle: These are tall and pointy and hard to jump around. I would try to swerve around them if at all possible especially when your snowball is still fairly small, otherwise make sure you give yourself that inch to jump over and clear this tall obstacle. Tree: These obstacles are tall and hard to clear by jumping so when your snowball is still a fairly small size just move around them, otherwise give yourself that inch again to jump over them. Igloo: Jump over these since they are low to the ground and easy to clear. House: The house is one of the hardest obstacles to avoid. You pretty much have to jump over them because they are so large and are hard to move around. More Things To Know There are some other things that will help you get a trophy in this game that I haven't really talked about yet and will now discuss here.
The game can lag on older computers. If you are having that problem, just play the game in low quality.
It is best to keep your eye on the lower left hand corner of the screen to see what is coming ahead of you so you can be prepared!
When you get to choose one of three paths for the second stage of each level, I tend to pick the path with the most turns because it looks longer and you want each level to last as long as possible in order to pick up more items for points. There is no proof that the path with the most turns is longer, but that is what I've always done and I do have a silver trophy in the game.
You aren't penalized for not picking up an item, but you want to pick up as many items as possible obviously for the points! I sure hope that this article will help you get the ball rolling at becoming better at this game so you can roll over your fellow competition and get a Snow Roller trophy for your user lookup!
