The Complete Pet Gender Guide

by coolkaius

--------

The binary gender stated on your pet's lookup does not have to match the one they were created with or the paintbrush clothes they're wearing! This applies to unconverted pets as well. A gender change can reflect how they express their gender, their identity, or both!

I recommend using Dress To Impress to preview what your pet would look like with a gender change and a mix of paintbrush clothes. You can also find (or make your own) badges to share your pet's Pride!

I recommend drawing your pet(s) with their pride flag(s) or drawing them covered in a flag pattern. You can submit pride art to the Art Gallery in June and in the Beauty Contest year round. Pride art is always perfect for petpages, portfolios, and pet lookups.

Pride month is celebrated in Neopia and it is a perfect time to learn how to change your pet's gender.

Changing Your Pet's Gender - Risk Free Methods:

These will only affect your pet's eyes (if they're converted) and gender marker. Everything else, including their paintbrush clothes, are unaffected by these methods. I recommend using these options for unconverted pets, so they aren't accidentally converted.

Fight the Scientist in the Battledome until your pet's gender is changed. This can only be done on your main account, so you may need to transfer your pet. When he uses a Strange Potion as a weapon, then you'll see the gender change. I recommend withdrawing from the fight immediately after he uses the potion to avoid the risk of it being reversed. Quitting will count as losing the battle. It may take you many battles before it happens.

To get him as a challenger you need to unlock the Lab Ray. Refresh the zap page until he unlocks. It takes a while for some.

This option is a great value for your Neopoints because you can use it for many gender changes.

Use a Strange Potion. This is a good option if you do not want to transfer your pet to your main. It's also a very expensive option. It's only a good value if you want 1 gender change and do not care about the lab ray's benefits.

The Royal Boy/Girl Kyrii Morphing Potions will change their entire appearance to the respective gendered color.

Changing Your Pet's Gender - Risky Methods:

Zapping your pet with the lab ray has a chance of changing your pet's gender. Of course, it also might change your pet's stats, color, and species. Some days you may not see any changes at all.

If your pet is a gendered color such as elderly or royal, a zap will change their entire appearance to the color of the opposite binary gender. The pet's eyelashes (or lack of) and paintbrush clothes will change. The chances of getting different paintbrush clothes from the Lab Ray are really low so I do not recommend it for that purpose.

Feed your pet a Witchy Negg. It has the chance of changing your pet's gender, species, raising intelligence, raising hit points, and curing them. It will only change one of these things when fed. This is technically the cheapest option, but could easily add up if you don't get a gender change from it the first time.

You are allowed to have someone borrow your pet so they can use them to battle the scientist for you. According to TNT, if you lose anything in a loan it is your own fault.

     Mixing Gendered Paint Brush Clothes:

Pets can be painted more than once to get both paint brush sets. Paint brush clothes ONLY transfer with user to user. Only clothes that match the current color will transfer this way. For example, if your pet has both royal sets and they're set to male, then only the male clothes will transfer. If you want to cross paint a pet, I highly recommend planning carefully.

These colors have gendered variants: Elderly, Quiguki, Royal, and Usuki.

In my opinion, these are the best ways to get both sets:

Make sure the pet is on your main account. Paint them. Battle the Scientist until their gender is changed. Paint them again.

Make sure the pet is on their permanent account. Paint them. Use a Strange Potion. Paint them again.

If you want a gender change and both sets:

You can always change their gender again after painting them twice. Fighting the Scientist is the best way to get multiple gender changes. The only downside of this is that the pet will need to be permanently on your main account. This is for reasons discussed earlier.

     Other Interesting Gender Facts:

If you hatch a Draik, their gender will be random. You can use a Draik morphing potion to avoid this.

On your user lookup, you can set your gender to "other". This is great for anyone who does not want to disclose or choose a binary gender (like me). This setting can always be changed.

TNT has said in an editorial that you can cover your pet's gender as long as you're not trying to scam or trick anyone. They also advise that you show the pet's gender if you plan on trading them. You are not allowed to cover the actual pet image or any of their stats.

The description of the Pteri Gnome Beard says: "Do female lawn gnomes have beards too? DO lawn gnomes have a gender? *ponders*"

The Cape of the Sun used to have a chance of turning male pets into females. This glitch was fixed.

The Prom Date Usuki is a male Usuki doll who wears a fancy tuxedo.

The Prom Date Usuki Reject looks the same except with a completely different outfit!

My favorite Neopian item the Space Prom Date Usuki Reject is a female Usuki doll. I find it interesting how the gender changed! You can find this fact in their item descriptions.

It could be because the Space Usuki has eyelashes!
