When a Fountain Quest Comes Along

by dianacat777

--------

Ah. The Fountain Faerie. Many Neopian citizens dream of the day when she might grace them with a quest and bestow her much-wanted reward on their pet. Her visits are incredibly rare, and it's true, few will ever see one of her quests, but they're certainly worth doing.

Once the initial shock of seeing her passes, a lucky recipient of a Fountain Faerie Quest will probably look up the item she asked for, and chances are, it's very expensive.

Don't feel overwhelmed. The only time you should ever turn down a Fountain Faerie Quest is if all of your pets are already the colors you want them, or if the paint brush you'd like to have her paint your pet with is cheaper than the item she asks for.

Remember, the Fountain Faerie can paint your pet special colors like Jelly and Snot, but she can't do certain other ones like Ice or Robot. So be careful about what you're planning to get!

The items aren't necessarily expensive, though. For instance, I was once asked for an Amulet of the Dark Faerie, and that cost me a mere eighteen thousand Neopoints at the time. Usually, though, her requested items are between 100,000 and 1,000,000 Neopoints.

You aren't allowed to use the Shop Wizard during any faerie quest, but it's generally not useful during most Fountain quests anyways.

You can make a choice here; you want to opt for the Trading Post or the Auctions. I personally like the Trading Post more, because the responses are usually quicker. Also, the items you want are generally hard to sell, so the people selling may be willing to give you low prices just so they can get it off their hands. But the Auctions are nice because you can tell when you're going to get the item, and you can see if somebody is doing better than you are. Similarly, it's not likely to see as much competition on the Auctions as there usually is, because the items she wants are rare, but not usually popular.

After a few days of searching, and not getting responses on your trade lots, or having other people win the auctions you bid on, you may be tempted to press that 'I don't want to do this quest' button. Don't. You will eventually get the item through persistence, and you'll regret aborting the quest later. A Fountain Faerie quest is the only 'safe' way of making your pet certain rare Lab Ray Only colors, and it is usually much cheaper than the paint brush you want to use on your pet.

It's a good idea to check through the trading post boards. People might be selling the item you want there.

If you simply don't have enough money for the quest, there's a few things you can do. It's a good idea to check your safety deposit box to see if there's any potentially valuable items you've put in there; I found a couple paint brushes I'd forgotten about in there once. You might even want to sell your pet's petpets, and get the same type of petpet later, although I don't advise it. Play a wide array of games for Neopoints; you'll find you get progressively better at them while you save up.

There are multiple pages that can show you how to make twenty, thirty, or fifty thousand Neopoints a day. It won't be easy, but it's possible.

You might even want to try your hand at competitions, like the Poetry Contest or Storytelling Competition. They can give out very rare items like paint brushes if you can manage to win, which you can sell for lots of Neopoints. It's also very fun, and you might find a new hobby in them.

I wouldn't count on this, and I certainly wouldn't beg, but sometimes there will be very nice users on the Faerie Quests boards who may simply send you the item as a surprise gift. :)

If you try, you will end up getting the item eventually. It might take a long time, but it will be worth it in the end.

So, what do you do once you have the item?

Return to the Faerie Quests page. All your hard work has finally paid off. The Fountain Faerie will thank you and say she has a special reward for you the next time you visit the Rainbow Fountain.

Select the pet you want to paint as your active pet, and go to the Rainbow Fountain (This is not the Rainbow Pool in Neopia Central!). The Rainbow Fountain is on the Faerieland Index page, not in Faerie City, and it's located just above the Wheel of Excitement. Click on it. The fountain will finally be active, and you'll see a large drop-down list of all the colors she can paint your pet with.

With customisation in effect, you might want to paint your pet a color with some paint brush clothes, and use them to decorate another pet. You might want an exotic Lab Ray color. Or maybe you just want to paint your pet a color that's otherwise expensive that you've always wanted, like Faerie, Darigan, Grey, or Maraquan. The choice is yours.

So browse through the list, make a decision, and let your pet enjoy its new, exotic color! Enjoy!

FAQs

Q: Can I visit the Fountain Faerie any time I want after doing her quests?

A Sadly, no. It's just one paint job per quest.

Q: Is there a certain time of day where the Rainbow Fountain will be magical and I can paint my pets there?

A No, there isn't. This was just a rumor. The only way to use the Rainbow Fountain is by completing a Fountain Faerie Quest.

Q: If you don't paint your pets the first time you visit the Rainbow Fountain after doing a quest, can you still use your reward?

A: Yes. The fountain will be magical again until you paint your pet.

Q: Can she make my pet Jelly?

A: Yep. :)

Q: Can I sell the paint brush she gives you after a quest?

A: No, she doesn't give you a paint brush. She just paints a pet for you.

Q: Can I choose the color she paints my pet?

A: Of course! Otherwise, it wouldn't be much of a reward, would it? ;)
