A Trophy-Winning Guide to Revel Roundup by cistine
--------
Revel Roundup is the first ‘adventure’ game on the main games page, so chances are you’ve probably tried it but did not obtain a great score. Some decided to give up playing, seeing as there are no avatars or any other special rewards for playing this game. But in reality, this can be a very easy game trophy if you have the patience and luck. So why not give it a try?
To win a trophy, you have to be the very best at this game, like no one ever was. In order to do so, you’ve gotta catch them all, and by them I mean the snorkles. In addition, you’ll also have to collect festive items along the way. Simple, right? WRONG! Although all you’re doing is walking around collecting stuff, there is actually much strategy in the way you go about it. This article is here to explain all the secrets and what not. :)
Game Mechanics
The surroundings: this game contains 9 maps placed in a 3 by 3 grid, like such:
1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 You start in map 1, and it is also the map where Anshu is. My suggested order of going through the maps is: 1, 4, 5, 2, 3, 6, 9, 8, 7. The reason for this is that map 7 has the least walkable ground, which means there’s less chance an item you need will appear there. Walk around a bit to familiarize yourself with the area. There are only a couple of things to watch out for: -In map 5, you can see a little roof following the path going down. Sometimes there may be an item under this roof. So when you come into the map, always glance there for a second to see if it might be something you need (or don’t want!). -In map 8, you can see there are 2 parts of the map that you can’t seem to reach. For the upper left, you can reach it from the top right of map 7. For the vertical strip of ground near the top middle, you can reach it from map 5. Again, walk through all the maps at first so you know exactly how to reach all the places. The items: there are 3 levels in this game, and each level requires you to find all the items on your list in order to pass. The list can be found on the left side of the screen. The first level will need 6 items, second level will need 10, and 12 for the third level. Exactly half of those items are snorkles. So on the first level, there will be exactly 3 snorkles. There are no extra snorkles, so remember to collect any that you see.
The festive items, on the other hand, CAN have extras, but it’s also possible that they only give you the amount you need. For example, there is only 1 pineapple on the list, but out of every single map, there can be 2 or more pineapples, and it’s up to the player which one to acquire. However, this is also where a dilemma occurs. If you go into a map and see an item in the far corner that’s waayyy out of your path, you may or may not want to get it because there can be another one in a different map that’s on your way, but if there isn’t one, you’ll have to come all the way back to get this, and it will waste a lot of time.
Another situation you may encounter is when the item you need IS on your path, so you’ll naturally go for it, but then you see that item again on a different map, and it’s blocking your path to the next map. In this case you’ll probably regret getting the item so early. Since there’s no way of knowing what items you will see later, the game can be quite frustrating at times. Generally, my strategy is to get the item that is on my way and if things do not work out well, I’ll simply restart. It’s really up to you what you want to do.
Oh and I almost forgot to mention, if you do happen to pick up a wrong item that is not part of the list, an exclamation mark will appear over your head and you can no longer collect anything while it’s there. To get rid of it, walk in front of Anshu (the Ruki on the starting screen) and give it to him, no pressing of any buttons required. On a side note, just like how the snorkles are always needed, the other petpets are never needed. The only other petpets are jumas (the fox looking ones) and pandaphants (a cross between a panda and elephant XD). They “wiggle” a little like the snorkles, so you should have no problems identifying them.
Time: the time in this game is denoted by the number of glowing dots at the top left corner of the game screen. There are 12 dots in total and each dot represents roughly 10 seconds of time. So that means, when you start the game and 10 seconds have passed, the first dot will stop glowing. After another 10 seconds, the second dot will stop glowing, and so on. This gives you around 2 minutes in total, and every time you complete a level, 3 dots are reset, adding 30 seconds to what you have left for the next level.
In this article I will be referring to the amount of time used as dots, so if I say “only use 2 dots for level 1”, that means only 2 dots are darkened by the time you complete the level. (You have about 29 seconds in all before the 3rd dot gets darkened. Get the pattern? :)). Please keep in mind that it’s very important that you complete the level within the number of dots I recommend because the time affects your score. This will be explained in detail in the next section.
The scoring system: how exactly the score is calculated, I have no clue, BUT there are patterns that provide you with hints. For example, if you pick up a wrong item, 1 point will be deducted from that level’s score. Picking up 2 wrong items will deduct 2 points, and so on. So avoid wrong items at all costs! (Trust me, 1 point can be the difference from getting a trophy or not.)
Another thing that affects the scoring for levels 2 and 3 is the amount of points you get in the previous level. Say if I used up 1 dot for the first level (which results in 15 points, assuming no wrong items), and 3 dots for the second, I will receive 43 points for the second level. BUT if I use 2 dots for the first level (13 points), and 3 for the second, I will only receive 42 points for it. See the difference? Last thing about scoring is that you get 84 points for completing all 3 levels, i.e. completing the game.
Basically, time is everything when it comes to your score (again, assuming you did not pick up any wrong items, because you really shouldn’t). Generally speaking, you should use about 1-2 dots for the first level, 2-3 dots for the second, and 3-4 dots for the third. Below is a short list I’ve painstakingly compiled to tell you exactly how much points you will get for different dot-consumption combinations:
Format: # of dots used for first level - # of dots for second - # of dots for third = total score. 2-3-3 = 235 pts (this is the most common high score you’ll see on the first day of the month) 1-2-4 = 237 pts 1-3-3 = 240 pts 2-2-3 = 242 pts In my experience, any score you get over 240 will have to be reviewed by TNT to deem valid. So if you want to get on the high score table and snatch that trophy before all the super high scores get on, you’d want to get a score between 235 to 239. So far I’ve only figured out the time combination to get 235 and 237, so you may want to play around a bit to see if you can get the other ones. Gaming Tips
Now that you know all about how the game works, let’s move on to the practical tips :) This section is more or less a summary of the above, plus a few extra things. Since you’re probably tired of reading by now, I’ll make this short and sweet. :)
Never pick up wrong items. When you’re walking on a path without any obstacles, glance over to your list to make a mental note of what items you need. You should never stop walking. And I don’t mean just walking back and forth. Set a goal of how many dots you want to use up for each level. If you went over that, restart. Don’t be surprised if you find yourself restarting 50 times because of certain items blocking your path. This is normal because you need a lot of luck in order for all 3 levels to go smoothly. Don’t give up! Unlike the usual “practice makes perfect”, I would say luck makes perfect in this game. Since walking around doesn’t take much skill, you’ll only need luck to get all the items quickly (as in, all the items appearing in the early maps).
Lastly, good luck, everyone! (Because I know you’re gonna need it.) :)
