Welcome to the Vegetable Patch

by carrotopian

--------

It is no secret that I have a soft spot for 'vegetable' Chias (the clue is in my user name) and my little ol' veggie garden is constantly watched over by reformed Chiavore and chia champion, Chiaholic, the glorious Ghost Lupe - who makes absolutely sure that my fabulous vegetable Chias (along with their Petpets and P3s) are free to frolic peacefully in their gorgeous garden, without any fear of being nibbled, sliced or steamed.

You may very well have already noticed that some vegetable types are only found in and around certain Neopian lands whilst others are not always quite so easy to identify since a few fruits are really rather sneaky - shamelessly masquerading as veggies when they are not! Fruits which are often misclassified and/or mistakenly described as vegetables include: Aubergines, Peppers and Tomatoes.

In fact, there are only six true 'vegetable' Chias available compared to the nineteen 'fruit' Chias that Neopians like you and I are able to create on Neopets and sometimes that's easier said than done - I mean, honestly, have you ever tried to get your hands on a Magical Pea Chia Pop or are you forever pining for a Fountain Faerie Quest?

However, I have curated a handy list to reflect the varieties available; I have all of the available 'vegetable' Chias on my main account and I will introduce each one of them to you below. I do not have any 'fruit' Chias (although I do really like Grape Chias) and, I would love to see a Potato Chia but then, I would need an extra Neopet slot, wouldn't I? Just saying.

Also, can we just talk about Mutant Chias for a moment? I don't know about anyone else but I think they look decidedly organic. Fruit, vegetable or just malevolent swamp things? Are they ever in real and present danger from marauding Lupes? I’m undecided. Anyway, to the list!

     THE FOLLOWING FOODS ARE VEGETABLES

     ASPARAGUS

Neopian description: "The food of gods! Truly!"

     My Asparagus Chia is Asparagirl.

     CARROT

Neopian description: "Delicious for your pet to nibble on."

     My Carrot Chia is Carrotia.

CHOKATO - although this references a Tomato (a fruit), it is classified by TNT as a vegetable.

Neopian description (Chokato): "This tasty veggie mixed with chocolate and tomato is great for a snack."

     My Chokato Chia is Cellulosic.

     ONION

Neopian description: "A tasty onion makes an eye-watering snack for Neopets brave enough to try it."

     My Onion Chia is PeelBack.

     PEA

Peas do not exist in Neopia as a single item (unless you consider the Attack Pea); they are found often as ingredients but, there is a close food item match with Bag of Peas.

Neopian description (Bag of Peas): "This bag is simply brimming over with fresh peas picked from the fields this morning."

     My Pea Chia is Podded.

UMMAGINE - although similar to an Aubergine, this is classified by TNT as a vegetable.

Neopian description (Ummagine): "The Ummagine is a large root vegetable that grows far underground. It is such a hassle to dig them up that it is very rarely done."

     My Ummagine Chia is Maggotscream.

THE FOLLOWING FOODS ARE FRUITS / BERRIES

     AGUEENA

Neopian description (Agueena): "This cool tasting fruit is even better with a dash of salt on top."

     APPLE

Neopian description (Green Apple): "An apple a day keeps the doctor away!"

     AUBERGINE

Aubergines do not exist in Neopia as a single item; they are found often as ingredients but, there is a close food item match with Chia Shaped Aubergine.

Neopian description (Chia Shaped Aubergine): "It took many months of teasing and training to get this Aubergine to look like this."

     AVOCADO

Avocados do not exist in Neopia as a single item; they are found often as ingredients but, there is a close food item match with Large Avocado Smoothie.

Neopian description (Large Avocado Smoothie): "A little thick, but very smooth. Great to dip chips in."

     BLUEBERRY

Neopian description (Blueberries): "Remember to brush your teeth after enjoying these."

     DURIAN

Neopian description (Fresh Durian): "This fruit has a pungent smell and a custard-like texture."

     GOOSEBERRY

Neopian description (Gooseberries): "A handful of extremely sour fruit that seem to be covered with tiny little hairs."

     GRAPE

Neopian description (Grapes): "Yum, a bunch of grapes to feed your pet."

     LEMON

Neopian description (Lemon): "Mmm a lovely lemon."

     LIME

Neopian description (Lime): "Delicious in all kinds of things, but not so good to eat on its own."

     ORANGE

Neopian description (Orange): "A big round juicy orange that is just bursting with vitamin C."

     PEACH

Neopian description (Peach): "A ripe and juicy peach sits here."

     PEAR

Neopian description (Pear): "A healthy pear for your pet."

     PEPPER

Peppers do not exist in Neopia as a single item; they are found often as ingredients but, there is a close food item match with Dried Chilli Peppers.

Neopian description (Dried Chilli Peppers): "These peppers just seem to get hotter when they are dried!"

     PINEAPPLE

Neopian description (Pineapple): "Once you get through the tough skin, pineapples are actually rather yummy."

     PLUM

Neopian description (Plum): "A tasty plum just for you."

     STRAWBERRY

Strawberries do not exist in Neopia as a single item; they are found often as ingredients but, there is a close food item match with Spherical Strawberry.

Neopian description (Spherical Strawberry): "This fruit has been grown in a strange shape to make it more appealing...do you think it worked?"

     THORNBERRY

Neopian description (Thornberry): "Dont worry, the thorns arent sharp on this berry. But the taste is extremely juicy and sweet."

     TOMATO

Neopian description (Tomato): "A big ripe tomato - ooh, marvel at its redness."

There are, of course, several other Chias which are food-related and I'm going to give them an honourable mention here: Biscuit, Chocolate, Custard, Ice (the tenuous wildcard because you can use ice in food/drinks) and Jelly - which brings me to my final question (that I hope TNT can answer) - WHAT FLAVOUR IS THE JELLY CHIA? Thus far, I have refrained from licking one to find out, but if it's Potato then we are going to have a problem.
