Favourites from Y23: Colours and Outfits

by aleu1986

--------

Another year has come and gone, and it's time to reflect on what the past year has given us. In this article, I will be listing my personal favourite pet colours and outfits from the previous year. These choices are based on my personal opinion only, and I have made a point of not choosing the same species in both categories, so as to make it fairer. I have selected one colour and one outfit from each month.

When you look back on the new outfits and colours that were released last year, which ones stand out to you? Neomail me and tell me about your favourites, I would love to hear your opinion.

     The Month of Sleeping

     Steampunk Aisha

As far as the Steampunk aesthetic goes, this Aisha looks a bit simple and plain compared to many other Neopets in this colour – but in my personal opinion, I think it looks great. While I enjoy Steampunk, I do sometimes think it`s a little much, so this Aisha's toned-down look was quite refreshing. I like the aviator look of the hat, and the zoom lens on the eye is a nice touch.

     Explorer Kacheek

Versatility in an outfit is important to me, and while this ensemble isn`t fancy or flashy, you can utilize it in different ways, which matters more, in my opinion. With this practical outfit, your Kacheek can of course be an explorer or adventurer, or a mountain climber, a safari guide or even a scout leader. The little blue feather in the hat is a very cute detail. I`m not a fan of big facial hair on Kacheeks as I don`t feel it suits their youthful appearance, but the outfit itself is good.

          The Month of Awakening

     Water Chia

As a colour, Water is pretty straightforward. This one is quite nice; I like the splash of water that makes up the hair and the little drop dripping from the hand is a good detail. Another thing I appreciate is the green colouring along the edges of the Chia`s body, it makes the outlines much softer compared to other Water pets, making them look more pleasing overall.

          Zafara Occultist Outfit

Choosing a favourite outfit for this month was easy, the Occultist Zafara looks fantastic! I especially love the top hat with the colourful feathers, and the skull facepaint works strangely well with the Zafara`s large eyes – it looks cute in a really creepy way. There`s lots of detail to this outfit, so every time you glance at it you`ll discover something new.

     The Month of Running

          Steampunk Uni

Compare this Uni to the Steampunk Aisha pictured earlier in this article, and you might realize why I called the Aisha plain and simple... The Uni is a more classical Steampunk example, very detailed and over-the-top. A tad too much for my personal taste, but I do admit it looks fantastic and with all the details there is so much to discover.

While the outfit comes with a skirt, this look can easily be used by Neopets of both genders, either with the addition of trousers, or cleverly disguising the skirt with the use of a foreground. I adore the detail of the oil pump in the pocket of the skirt, so clever!

The unclothed base colour looks good as well, brownish-grey body, orange mane and tail, with the Uni sporting an expression similar to that of a Pirate.

     Sweet Tooth Chomby

This colourful ensemble is a treat for your senses! It`s a type of outfit that`s just ridiculous enough to make it look cool. It`s fun and vibrant, cute and childish. I especially like the wig with the soft-looking curls. I also appreciate that the Chomby has four shoes, as in some cases quadruped Neopets get shoes on their back feet only, or sometimes gloves on their front feet. The necklace is a bit too big and bulky for my taste, but other than that this whole look just makes me smile and crave candy.

     The Month of Eating

     Elderly Lutaris

Elderly Lutaris both have the same base colour, which is unusual for Elderly pets. They both look like sweet, kind grandparents though! For Elderly Girl, I especially like the slippers, they are so cute and also an item that can work for Lutaris of other colours in morning/nighttime themed customizations. The dress is adorable and gives me summer vibes. The knitting pins in her hair bun is a nice touch, I can certainly picture this Elderly Lutari sitting on a porch on a summer’s day knitting a scarf for winter.

The wig and beard for the Elderly Boy gives him the appearance of a friendly grandpa, but can also be used for slightly younger Lutaris, the same is true for the clothing. I appreciate that you can just as easily apply this outfit to Lutaris of other ages. The sweater is my favourite item from this outfit, who doesn`t like argyle?

     Unhinged Cybunny

This outfit, based on the character Topsi, was directly related to The Festival of Neggs from this previous year. During the event, it was revealed that Topsi was in fact an advanced android created by Dr. Sloth, though his harmful programming was thankfully removed, and he was restored to his normal, cheery Negg-loving self.

The clothing set consists of a wig, overalls, colourful scruff and a katana. My favourite piece from this is without a doubt the scruff, as it can be applied to Cybunny of most paintbrush colours, giving them a more colourful appearance, perfect for The Festival of Neggs!

     The Month of Hunting

     Chocolate Moehog

I`m always delighted at the addition of a new Chocolate Neopet (crossing fingers and toes for Chocolate Eyrie this year!) and the Moehog is certainly a sweet addition. The whipped cream in place of their mane looks absolutely delicious with the cherry and sprinkles, and because the cream is replacing the Moehogs natural hairdo, it looks more natural compared to on other Chocolate pets. The tusks being bananas is a very clever touch, they could also be wafer biscuits, but I want to say they`re pointy bananas. The sauce and glaze are tastefully applied, so this Chocolate Moehog looks good enough to eat!

     Mysterious Yurble

The Ghost base colour was the perfect choice on which to showcase the Mysterious Yurble outfit. I love these elegant clothes, the sweeping cape and the dark red vest. I appreciate that there is colour to the ensemble rather than it just being a simple black suit. The sleek wig (looks like this Yurble uses enough hair gel) looks great on this Neopet as well, and who knows what he is hiding underneath that mask? A great addition to your Yurbles closet for sure.

     The Month of Relaxing

     Zombie Jubjub

Another great month for the pet days, I chose to go with the Zombie Jubjub for the best colour. This definitely gave me a chill, despite Jubjub Day taking place in summer! I love the level of detail on this, such as how you can see the brain poking out from beneath the skull, and the small frizzy hairs is a fun touch. The feet are a prominent feature of a Jubjub, and glimpsing the skeleton through the rotten skin is so chilling. Not to mention the cold, dead eyes and the big stitches (or staples) on the JubJub’s face. Without a doubt one of the better Zombie Neopets!

     Money Tree Ghost Quiggle

With my creepy choices of colour and outfit for this month, you`d think this was the Month of Collecting, and Halloween was right around the corner! But even in summertime, there`s room for some spooks, and I for one appreciate scary vibes all year round.

The Money Tree Ghosts appear in Random Events, they steal Neopoints from users and put them under the Money Tree, they have also been known to steal the donations.

This clothing set consists of both arm and leg wraps plus chains, all thankfully split into three separate items, making for more varied customization options. There’s also a bag for holding the stolen NP, and markings which when applied to a Quiggle whose markings are a different colour than red, will give them a scarlet hue.

     The Month of Swimming

     Toy Peophin

Like many others, I was delighted to see the Toy Peophin announced in the New Features and the striking red colour coupled with the iconic pattern was instantly recognizable to me. I`m very happy to see Neopets in this paintbrush colour based on actual toys – though in this case the Toy Peophin would be used mostly for decoration rather than for playing with. To stay true to the original, the material should be wood rather than plastic, but the pattern and colours are on point. I love the colourful mane and the white head collar and reins, so cute. I think this one was popular with Peophin owners everywhere.

     Maractite Armour Flotsam outfit

There`s something almost regal about this outfit which mixes gold details with the maractite pattern. It`s beautiful to look at while also being practical and functional, giving the Flotsam good protection in battle. The trident is my favourite piece of the outfit, a good reference to the aquatic nature of the species, and the colours on it match the armour perfectly.

     The Month of Hiding

     Candy Meerca

I`m always happy to see a Candy Neopet that doesn`t have a candy cane stripy pattern – not that it doesn`t look nice, it`s just great to see more variation in the paintbrush colour.

The Candy Meerca is based on the Jawbreaker, a type of round hard candy with several layers and gum at the centre. The rainbow pattern inside the Meerca’s ears hints to this. The tail appears to be an homage to another type of candy, a rainbow fruit roll-up.

The colourful spots and the bright red nose of this Candy Meerca makes me think of clowns and the circus, it`s a cute and fun design, sort of how I wish the Polka Dot colour could look like.

     Blumaroo Rohane outfit

Rohane is the main character and star of NeoQuest II, and is as such one of the most well-known Blumaroo characters, I`d say it`s about time we got an outfit based on him.

I do have a fondness for knight-like ensembles, and this one looks both beautiful, almost as if Rohane was part of a king or queen`s royal guard.

     The Month of Gathering

     Woodland Techo

A unique Woodland Neopet to be sure, I was quite fascinated by this Techo upon release. This is one Neopet it won`t be easy to spot amongst the foliage. I especially like the leaf tail and how the face almost has a bird-like character to it. A great addition to the Woodland paintbrush colour.

     Cyberpunk Draik outfit

This futuristic outfit was released for Draik day the previous year, and it`s certainly a striking ensemble, perfect for those users struggling to obtain the Robot colour from the Secret Lab ray. It looks like something right out of the Virtupets Space Station, it could even be used in battle-themed customizations, as it does look a bit like armour.

     The Month of Collecting

     Marble Grarrl

The Marble Grarrl is a truly unique and striking addition to this paintbrush colour. Instead of being based on patterns we all remember from the little glass marbles we owned as kids, the Marble Grarrl takes inspiration from their prehistoric origins, sporting stone fossils. A clever idea, and I really like the purple base colour as well.

     Eyrie Talinia outfit

Talinia is an experienced archer featured in the game NeoQuest II.

We do already have an Eyrie Archer outfit, but this one is so beautiful! I love the bold colours, the mix of blue and yellow looks regal. I appreciate that the bow and quiver are two separate items, and although this outfit features a skirt, the rest can easily suit a male Eyrie. I`m a huge Eyrie fan, and my flock were very excited about this new outfit!

     The Month of Storing

     Spotted Vandagyre

Vandagyres got treated to a whole three colours this past year, which other than Spotted included Zombie and Toy – both of which looked great, in my opinion.

I am choosing to shine the spotlight on Spotted here due to its unique look. At first glance, it may appear as if this Vandagyre is of a food colour such as Biscuit (that was my thought when I first saw it) but it is in fact Spotted. It`s a unique and striking colour, and the soft brown tones also make it suited for customization.

     Hannah Usul outfit

Hannah is quite the adventurous Usul and has been featured in several plots and games. This green winter coat is from the Hannah and the Ice Caves plot, where she travels to Terror Mountain, playing a key role in freeing the Bori and stopping the Bringer of Night.

The coat is a beautiful moss green with a thick fur lining, and brown mittens and boots complete the look which can suit any outside winter scene, even a holiday-themed customization.

We do already have the Hannah and the Ice Caves Collectors Coat (released in Y11) but it`s nice to have a version that can be worn by Usuls only.

The wig is also beautiful, I love the long, flowing locks, perfect for the cute and feminine Usuls.

     The Month of Celebrating

     Royal Ogrins

These new regal Neopets arrived from distant, eastern lands just over the holidays and they are both fantastic! Their base colours (especially on the Royal Boy) are also quite striking. My personal favourite of the two is the Royal Boy, both due to the lovely base colour he has, but also the outfit. The blood-red turban and the white pristine robes give your eyes a break from the otherwise busy and colourful ensemble.

I think it`s a nice touch that the same pattern is repeated on the Boy`s shawl and the Girl`s skirt, even if in the latter`s case, it clashes with the other colours and patterns already present in the outfit. The Royal Girl still looks lovely, but in my opinion, her clothes are a bit too busy and colourful.

As a species, the Ogrin has never been very popular, and their colours and outfits haven`t always gotten lots of praise, but many users commented on this upon release, saying that it was well deserved for the Ogrins to get such a lovely, well-executed colour.

     Kell Wocky outfit

Kell is a character who, along with this brother Corbin, was introduced in the Spooky Food Eating Contest, an event that featured a shapeshifting monster the two brothers came to capture. The two have been raised as monster hunters, and travel Neopia to find them and get rid of them.

Kell wears a leather jacket inherited from his father, a cotton shirt over a t-shirt, comfortable jeans and sturdy boots. And of course, he`s got a lovely head of blonde locks, finally completing his monster hunter look are the sunglasses. Only worn during the daytime outside, of course.

This outfit would suit any tough, rock-music loving male Wocky.

I hope you enjoyed this look at the year we just left behind. Please feel free to Neomail me with any comments you may have, or if you`d like to share your favourite pet colours and outfits from the previous year.
