Legend of the Quiggle Runner
by tdyans

The fate of Meridell rested on this one brave Quiggle's legs....

Varlo ran across the countryside, his heartbeat pounding in his ears but the distant sounds of the enemy forces still audible. How the young Quiggle had dreamed of this day ever since his skill for speed had earned him the title of Royal Messenger. Finally he had his chance to be a hero. Yet now, faced with the reality of this attack, instead of thoughts of glory, his mind was filled fear— fear for his family, for his friends, and for his country.

Meridell was still a young kingdom, with no forces large enough to repel the vicious attack that had been launched against it. It would need the help of another kingdom if it was to survive, and this was the purpose that drove Varlo onward, clutching the letter that King Protinius had placed in his hand that morning.

Varlo's lungs burned and his legs ached, but he pushed himself forward, running faster and longer than he ever had before, until finally he reached Meridell's closest neighbor, Jovia. Having been alerted to the messenger's arrival, a stately old Wocky, King Herstus, strolled out to meet the panting Quiggle in the castle's courtyard.

The Wocky read the note quietly, and then tossed it back to Varlo. "I'm sorry, but Meridell's fight is none of my concern. It will have to stand or fall on its own." He turned to leave.

Varlo crumbled to the ground in disbelief and despair and began to weep. The king stopped and turned back. "Why are you crying, young pet?"

Varlo looked up through his tears. "Because I have failed. I ran as fast as I could, but I could not save my kingdom."

"And why should this matter? It is just one kingdom of many."

"But this kingdom is not like any other. It has the beautiful fields that I played in as a child, the trees that I climbed, the ponds that I swam in. It has my family and my friends and all who are dear to me. This kingdom… is my home." Varlo knew this must sound silly. He hung his head and continued to cry, until a gentle paw came to rest upon his shoulder….

***

Varlo bowed before the regal Lupe, King Protinius, awaiting his words. The king stood from his throne. "Messenger of Meridell, I commend you today for your strength and bravery in bringing the forces of Jovia that helped to defend our land. Varlo, your legs saved our kingdom."

Varlo was about to respond when suddenly he felt a familiar paw fall upon his shoulder. He looked up to see King Herstus standing beside him. "No, Protinius," the Wocky said, "It was not his legs that saved Meridell, but his heart." He smiled down at Varlo. "And on hearts such as his will this kingdom surely prosper and grow."
