Contest:
Short Story Jamboree

Jubjub Natives
by ilae

The ferocious JubJubs started to march. The ominous pitter-patter of their feet could be heard throughout the jungle.

~

“Look! An Island Koi!”

Darryl groaned. “Ciara, it’s too early to be interested. If you want to go take pictures, just let me sleep.”

Ciara dug through her bag for her camera. “Why did Dad make me bring you?.”

“Like I wanted to come.”

“Oh shush. I’m going to take some pictures down the river a bit. And on’t even think about eating my food.”

“But I’m hungry!”

“Maybe you shouldn’t have eaten your entire supply of Neocola and Crispies on the plane.”

“Well what am I supposed to eat?”

“There’s a patch of Snidberries around here somewhere. Maybe you could go eat some of them.” She grinned. “Tata!”

He stuck his tongue out at his younger sister’s back as she disappeared through the jungle.

He probably should get up, he thought to himself. As long as he was going to be stuck on this stupid island, he’d need food. And until Ciara stopped being so whiny, it looked like Snidberries were going to be it.

Grabbing a cloth bag from Ciara’s backpack (she hadn’t said anything about not touching that, he smirked), Darryl wandered out into the wilderness.

~

Org stopped, and the horde stopped behind him. He lifted a foot and glanced at it.

He had stepped on some sort of rock. It was cold, and dripping brown. Org had never seen anything like it.

Growling, he continued, the others fell in step behind him. The strange ones were responsible for this, he was sure.

~

Ciara walked into camp exhausted a couple hours later. She had taken almost three rolls of pictures. After following the Island Koi, she surprised some Rukis, and narrowly missed stepping on a Kougra’s tail. She’d also discovered a small clearing, perfect for eating Chokato Crisp lunch.

She hadn’t enjoy it fully, however. She kept thinking about Darryl, wondering if he’d eaten anything.

When she arrived back at camp though, she found she had been worried over nothing. There was a bag of Snidberries on the ground, and water boiling over the fire.

“Darryl, did you fall asleep again?” Ciara called towards the tent as she put away her camera.

Waitaminute-Darryl usually snored loud enough to wake Turmaculus. The tent was silent. He couldn’t be asleep.

A twig snapped. She glanced over. “Darryl? Is that you? Your water is boiling-”

Something shook a tree behind her.

“I’m gonna tell Dad you were trying to scare me, you’re gonna be in trouble!”

There was thud as a coconut fell, narrowly missing her bag.

“Darryl! You almost broke my camera! This isn’t funny! Come out!”

The bushes to her left rustled. Ciara turned towards them, glaring. “Darryl! When I find you you’re gonna wish you could really fly!”

She stomped into the jungle, her footsteps echoing against the silence.
