Short Story Jamboree

Victory is Ours
by d1aaahhh

It was a time of war, and a time of dark and dangerous deeds. It was a time for the villains to rule in chaos, and heroes to liberate the oppressed.

The Space Faerie had just destroyed a platoon of red grundos, cannon fodder to the ambition of the Great Master Dr. Sloth. We were ordered to the front. Us, a band of simple green grundos, pulled out the factory and made to fight. Another wave of Neopians swarmed against us, and we shuddered with fear, trembling with slingshots in hand. Then, out of nowhere, came a shrill whistle. The chattering of our teeth stopped, and the pounding of the approaching army was the only sound in the still evening.

A grundo stepped forward.

"Grundos, one and all, hear me now! We can win this battle and go home to our loved ones if we but remember one thing – who we are! We are not the useless toadies of the Great Dr. Sloth, we are grundos, with hearts pure and true. We gave birth to such famous grundo's as Zygorax and Truggdon. We can be great too! Immortality can be ours!"

A great roar of approval erupted from the masses. I felt a rush in my blood like nothing I had ever felt before. It felt like hope. As one, the platoon leapt forward, twirling our slingshots and pounding down on the enemy with brutal intensity.

For two hours we battled, the grundo who spurred us to fight shouting encouragement, his huge arms flailing against the enemy with berserker strength, plowing through the Neopians like wheat

Then, just as I felt my energy begin to flag, an evil Neopian leapt in front of me, lifting his blood drenched sword above my head, preparing to end my existence. As the blade was about to strike, a great green hand came out of nowhere and knocked the blade aside with one mighty blow. I looked up and saw the mighty grundo who had lead us into battle. He smiled at me, and then plunged into the fray, pounding down on the enemy, who all of a sudden dropped their weapons, and started to run before us!

The Space Faerie cackled her displeasure and disappeared in a puff of faerie dust, taking her army of Neopians with her. We stood there in disbelief, alive and well. And in a circle of fallen enemies stood the great green grundo who saved my very life. A cheer arose, and we lifted our impromptu leader to our shoulders in a celebration of life.

"I am Bazri, my friends and I am proud to have fought with you on this day where we have finally shown what it is to be a Grundo!" He stood there, valiant in the dying light, and we cheered for him, and celebrated our lives. Bazri became an icon for all grundos persecuted for uselessness! But what I remember most about that day was that because of Bazri, victory was ours!
