Short Story Jamboree

The Jovial Jetsam
by aliengem118

Ahanu knew he was different from other Jetsams. While most enjoyed to taunt their victims, he found nothing more inspiring then turning those melancholy frowns upside-down.

He would sit under the same tree everyday - and wait. He watched the dusty road that travelers would walk to and fro from town, climbing to his fins when there was enough. As the crowd harvested to behold his juggling, he then performed his own special show: telling jokes, acting short skits, doing backward somersaults and balancing upon a slack rope. Their applause rewarded his efforts, their smiles giving his heart the wings to soar. He loved living in the moment, healing weary souls with the blessed medicine of laughter. When the crowd finally dwindled, he would lean against the tree again to rest and wait for the group.

"Why aren't you like the others of your kind? What do you have to gain from doing this?"

"What do I have to gain for being mean?" Ahanu would reply whenever asked such common questions, staring up at his critics doing a headstand. "Some like a life of tranquil reflection, some to seize whatever they want without regarding those around them. I, myself, like a life of optimism. Why not see the cup as half full? You have nothing to lose, but everything to gain!"

"You should join the circus!"

This logical suggestion was the only thing that could ever cause Ahanu's cheer to flinch. "Sadly, I don't have what it takes to join the ranking of those greats. At least, this way, I'm able to achieve a small part of my impossible dream."

"You definitely have skill!" A voice said behind Ahanu while he pied himself in the face during a routine.

"Thank you very..." Ahanu's reply echoed forgotten when wiping the cream from his eyes, turning to find the Chia Clown standing there. For the first time, he was unable to react.

"You're staring as blankly as a Meepit," the Chia Clown teased, using his flower to squirt water at so the Jetsam could finish cleaning the pie away.

"I...I can't believe a real clown thinks I'm funny! I'm a huge fan of yours - I saw every show you did during your debut with ‘The Chia Apple Circus.' You were amazing!"

"Not amazing, just a prankster who decided to team with other pranksters and really get a chorus of laughs. Say, why don't you consider joining us? We could use upcoming talent!"

"I can't," Ahanu sighed. "Nobody would laugh at me. I'd ruin your circus - us Jetsams aren't meant for some things."

"Nonsense, you're not funny because of your outward appearance. Sure, a few trips and a honking red nose can get a chuckle, but the real magic comes from inside. If you're bright, then your smile becomes contagious!"

And wouldn't you know, the Chia Clown was right...
