Short Story Jamboree

The Legend of Count Von Roo
by scooby1209244

"I can't fall asleep without a story," the young blumaroo complained.

"It's late, Nyssa," grandfather replied. "I'll tell you a story tomorrow. Go to sleep."

Nyssa sat up. He loved to hear stories. "Please, just one? I promise I'll go to sleep right after it!"

Nyssa's grandfather sighed. "Alright, a short one."

"A scary one," Nyssa said eagerly, lying down.

Grandfather nodded. He sat, and looked towards the window.

"Oh, my, Nyssa...you can't go to bed with your window open!"

"Why not grandpa?" Nyssa asked.

Grandfather walked to the window, shutting it. "Why, Nyssa," he said, sounding surprised. "Haven't you heard of Count Von Roo?

"Von Roo is one of the most fearsome beings in Neopia. He lives in the Haunted Woods, deep in the forest where nobody can find him. He's an odd blumaroo, preferring to be alone...until he gets hungry."

"Hungry for what, grandpa?" Nyssa asked, glancing towards the window.

"Young neopets who leave their windows open," grandfather replied. "Now, on with the story.

"Count Von Roo was born in 200 BN. At that time, he was a happy blumaroo, living with his family on Roo Island. But then..."

"What happened to him grandpa? Why did he leave to go to the Haunted Woods?"

Grandfather shrugged. "Well, Nyssa, no one is quite sure. You see, the only way to be sure would be to ask Count Von Roo himself...

"Anyways. Von Roo became dissatisfied with his life. So he left to travel Neopia. He journeyed to every land, and saw many things.

"The last place Von Roo visited was the Haunted Woods. The neopets there warned him to go out during the day, and to never wander into the woods. Von Roo, being a curious lad, ignored their advice, and he went exploring in the Haunted Woods."

"He did?" Nyssa asked. "What happened to him?"

"Well, Von Roo travelled very deep into the Woods. He travelled to where no sunlight could reach him."

"Didn't he get scared?" Nyssa asked.

"I'm not sure," Grandfather replied. "In the woods, Von Roo discovered a castle. He settled in, and was not seen by neopians for many years. When he was seen, years later, he was...changed."

Nyssa was shaking under the blankets. "Changed how?"

"Von Roo had become a demon," grandfather anwered. "He was a vampire. He came out of his castle, very hungry. He travelled back to the main village in the Haunted Woods, and found several windows unlocked."

"What happened to the neopets inside?" Nyssa asked, pulling the blankets around his body.

"None of them were seen again," grandfather said. "None. You see, Von Roo had been quite hungry. So, Nyssa, you understand why you mustn't leave your window open?"

Nyssa, shaking, nodded. "Y-Yes grandpa."

Grandfather stood to leave. "Good night, Nyssa."

Grandfather left the room, and Nyssa pulled the blankets closer to him. He was almost asleep, when he heard a rustling sound outside his window...
