Short Story Jamboree

The Curious Quiggle
by ginger23456

It stood there, shrouded in darkness, looming over Neopia Central like a ravenous monster. Lightning struck, and that building, derelict for over one hundred years, lit up. Its windows were black with dust and nobody had ever seen what was inside for they were all too scared to enter.

A Quiggle named Thebias was not your average Neopian however, or so he told himself. “I can do anything!” he would shout to his friends.

So they dared him to enter. He couldn’t back out. And so on that stormy night there he was, standing before that old derelict house, looking at the shoddy bricks and crumbling wooden beams; and those windows. He peered inside but could see nothing as the dust was too thick. And then…

No, it was his imagination, surely. But he peered inside again. Yes, he saw it. Something moving inside. He could just make out a shadow, a blurry shape. His heart was thudding inside his chest.

I have to do this, he thought. But he couldn’t. He had frozen to the spot, unable to move an inch. He withdrew his head from the window, frightened that whatever was in there would jump out and grab him. He couldn’t do this and turned to walk away when he heard familiar voices in his head.

“If you don’t do it then you’ll just prove to us that you’re not brave.”

“If you do it you’ll be so cool.”

“No one’s ever done it before, you’ll be the first one to find out what’s in there.”

He smiled and a feeling of sheer bravery and pride rumbled through his body. He turned back to the building. It wasn’t just his friends, it was his curiosity. He desperately needed to know what was inside there, he had to. He wouldn’t be able to sleep at night not knowing what was in there.

He tried the door but it was stuck tight. If he really wanted to get inside that badly he had no other option but to break the window. He picked up a rock, gulped, and threw it at the window. It smashed into pieces and without thinking at all, Thebias climbed inside.

He started to cough. It was very dusty and dark inside and a musty smell entered his nostrils. He stood in the darkness, waiting for his eyes to adjust, but they never did.

“It is always dark in here,” a voice whispered through the darkness.

“Who are you?!” Thebias screamed.

“I am nothing, but I know who you are. I may cease to exist but I know everything about everybody. You can not escape from here. Your curiosity has gotten the better of you.”

Thebias turned to escape but instead of seeing that window, he saw nothing but darkness. The curious Quiggle had achieved what he’d wanted, but it had also cost him his life. Curiosity; it really is a deadly thing.
