“So… bored…” Six moaned, flopping back onto her Zen bed
and tossing the half-read comic book onto the floor. Six’s actual name is 64587465874368767,
but as that’s quite a mouthful, we’ll refer to her first digit for the duration
of this story.
“Tell me about it,” Groucho muttered from the
floor of his sister’s room. The aubergine Chia heaved an overly dramatic sigh.
“There’s nothing to do.”
“Well now, that’s a false statement if I ever
heard one!” Skyhawk exclaimed. The Kougra looked up from his book, wearing the
expression he most often did just before he began speaking about the wonders
of electronics. “We could--“
“No,” Groucho cut him off, knowing from experience
that he would not find anything stimulating that his brother suggested.
“Hey, we could always--“ Chiastovsky, an apple
Chia started.
“No,” Groucho interrupted flatly, staring up
at the ceiling in boredom.
The Poogle on the bed knew that she had to think
of something to amuse her siblings. It was her duty as second oldest pet. “Hey,
let’s play a game!” she exclaimed. Her family looked up at the glowing pet with
interest.
“I’m thinking of a number between one and a billion,”
Six began.
“Three,” Chiastovsky guessed.
“Nope.” Six’s eyes glittered in amusement.
“Two million and four?” Skyhawk estimated.
“No! Guess again.”
“Seven hundred and eighty-five?” Groucho queried,
slightly impatient.
“Nope. Guess agai—Hey! Where are you guys going?”
The two vegetable Chias and the yellow Kougra
had exited her neoroom in annoyance.

Now left to herself, Six was considerably more bored. She didn’t find much
interest in her Scout Unit anymore. TFox insisted on walking without a pause
for hours on end, and made a series of angry bleeps if anybody tried to stop
him.
“My life is so monotonous,” she said dryly, using
the longest word she knew. Every afternoon she would wake up and be force-fed
a breakfast of omelette and jellies. Or on rare occasions, beans and prune juice.
The variety left a lot to be desired.
Then she would set off for Neoschool. Occasionally
she’d be educated, but for the most part she’d hold elastic band wars with other
students. As soon as she got home, Six would read her superhero comics for hours
on end.
But now it was the long anticipated vacation,
and Six had already done everything that she had planned to do.
“I know who can save me from this pit of tedium,”
she suddenly announced, leaping up onto her luminous feet. “ULTRA POOGLE!!!!”
Six dug under her bed for something. There were
some mouldy cupcakes, hairy eye candies and an assortment of discarded clothes
that she tossed aside, but eventually she found what she was looking for. Six
held up the square of fabric.
Donning the slightly crumpled crimson cape, seemingly
average Neopian citizen Six became Ultra Poogle. “Now I will go out to defend
innocents and prevent crime!” she proclaimed. “And be back before bedtime!”
Suddenly her face fell. Not only did she have
to be home before bedtime, but before her siblings noticed her absence. “Ah
well, nothing is too much of a challenge for Ultra Poogle!”
Now, how to get outside and start fighting for
justice? Ultra Poogle could not jump out of the window, somebody would hear
her. She’d have to risk using the front door.
Groucho, Chiastovsky and Skyhawk were playing
a hot game of tag in the next room, and the Poogle had to be careful. Tiptoeing
out of her alter-ego’s room, she gently shut the door behind her, checking that
it was safe to continue. “Ultra Poogle risks her life, escaping from the dreaded
dungeon where beautiful Neopian Six is being held hostage,” she whispered. Escape
was somewhat more difficult with her commentating every step of the way.
”Tag! You’re it!” Skyhawk screamed, tagging Chiastovsky.
Both Chias ran from the Kougra in delight. Six waited until all three of them
had their backs turned, and scampered quickly towards the front door, opening
it as quietly as possible.
She ran straight into her owner, Mr. Cow.
“Six? What are you doing?” he said in confusion,
getting up and dusting himself off.
“Zounds! It is the evil Cow Man, out to put an
end to my heroic deeds! I will erase his memory with my expert paws,” Ultra
Poogle announced, waving a paw wildly in front of her owner’s eyes. Nothing
appeared to have happened.
Holycow81 scratched his head and went inside.
“Come home soon Six, it’s getting dark.”
Si—err, Ultra Poogle was finally out, and ready
for some action. Her days had been filled with boredom lately, and now, with
Kreluder shining brightly in the sky as an omen of good luck, it was time for
her to have a little fun.
She dived into a bush, making sure no one would
see her, most especially villains or evil denizens of Neopia. Her ears became
alert, and ready for any sign of trouble. Ultra Poogle was in a squatting position,
so she could leap out of the foliage easily.
As if on cue, the Poogle heard a scream. She
poked her head out as silently as she could to find out what was going on. There
were two shadowy figures near her, towering over a much smaller one. The little
one was obviously crying for help. “Someone, please, save me! I want my owner!”
One of the sinister villains clapped a dull hoof
over the smaller pet’s mouth and hissed, “Be quiet! How will we collect the
ransom if someone finds out what we’re up to?” His hood slipped off, and the
first shadowy figure was revealed to be a brown Uni wearing a large, black coat.
He had an overgrown, tangled mane, and a painful looking scar on his forehead.
“What if the authorities are watching right now? We have to be very quiet!”
He snarled, giving the small pet a tiny shove.
Ultra Poogle waited no longer. “Freeze, evil
scum,” she yelled, leaping out of the bush, surprising the three Neopets there.
The smaller one turned out to be a cloud Krawk, and the sidekick of the Uni
was a sinister-looking Buzz.
Both kidnappers took one look at the little heroine
and burst out laughing. “The authorities send me a puny Poogle to defend my
helpless hostage? She’s even a girl, for the love of Weewoos!” howled the Uni
hysterically. “You know, little Poogle, I bet there’s someone out there looking
for you at this time of night! Go on, go home, and leave old Raff and Snippy
to their work!”
”I’m not little and I’m not puny!” screamed Ultra
Poogle. “I am ULTRA POOGLE! And I’m here to put an end to your dirty work!”
She kicked at Raff’s feet, knocking him to the ground.
”For a girly type, she’s not so bad,” remarked
Snippy the Buzz. Just as she was about to grab the hostage and fly away, Ultra
Poogle snatched her by her delicate wings and tossed her next to her unconscious
boss. She pulled out some rope from the Uni’s bag, tied the dazed kidnappers
up and helped the Krawk to his feet.
”Thanks,” he mumbled, “I’m so grateful you came
to my rescue. But who are you, really?”
”Well, my secret identity will never be revealed,”
she answered, holding her glowing head up high. “Just call me Ultra Poogle!
I hope you can find your way home okay.”
The Krawk nodded, and ran off, his short legs
propelling him towards his worried owner who was searching for him in the distance.
Ultra Poogle set off in the other direction, leaving the two unscrupulous evildoers
to think about their actions.
Ultra Poogle sped up as her Neohome came into
view. This was the hard part, sneaking back in. Once inside, she crept down
the hallway into her room and shut the door behind her. Then she removed the
cape and, at the sound of footsteps, hurled it under her bed and jumped into
the inviting sheets, grabbing a comic book.
“Six! Where have you been?” Mr. Cow demanded,
looking at the Poogle.
“Why, dear owner, I have been reading comics
all evening, as you can see!” Six said innocently, staring at her owner with
wide eyes.
“Well… why is that comic book upside-down?” he
questioned her.
“It’s more interesting this way.”
Mr. Cow left, considerably more confused than
when he had entered, and Six breathed a sigh of relief. For now, her identity
was safe.
