“Haaaaa” I yawned.
I’d woken up to a warm, bright spring morning. I extended my arms out
as far I could, and brought them down again. As I rubbed the sleep out
of my tired eyes, something shook in the bushes. What could it be? I thought,
as I absent-mindedly pushed low hanging palm leaf away to get a better
view. I stood up. The tropical heat brought sweat down my back immediately.
The shrub shook again, even wilder than before. Something was in there
and I was going to investigate what it was.
Walking to that plant felt like hiking up a mountain. I was so tired
I was almost sleepwalking. Finally I reached the bush. I peered through
its leaves. What a strange sight I saw! A bright orange figure wearing
a hula skirt. Because it comes naturally to me to try and make friends
with who ever I come across, I leaped to the other side of the shrub and
asked this orange, hula skirt girl her name.
“Hi! I am Quester the Aisha. What is your name?”
“I’m Ginger. Ginger the Chia. I am pleased to meet you. I haven’t seen
your face on the island before,” she replied.
“That is because I am a traveler from Neopia. I would be most thrilled
if you could guide me around your beautiful island home,” I explained.
“My pleasure! I would be honored if I could travel with you! But I suppose
I would be too much trouble,” Ginger answered.
“Ginger, of course you may travel with me! However, please show me this
place!”
“Okay! First I will show you the Marketplace,” she agreed.
She led me down a long path dotted with trees. Then we came to what looked
like a village. She guided me into the center of the town. From where
I was I could see market stalls lined up into a square to my left. We
walked over to them. Ginger followed me as I browsed the shops. I examined
all of the foreign items. I found nothing of my attention.
“Now I will lead you to the schoolhouse,” decided Ginger.
I followed Ginger into a building of red brick. In side were rows of
desks, a black board, and a large desk. The walls were lined with potion
and Faerie jars. Interesting.
“Did the students make these?” I questioned.
“Yes. They do not like to read, so after lunch the teacher lets them
catch Faeries and make potions,” Ginger replied.
We walked out of the school.
“Next, I will lead you to a place which you may find amusing,” Ginger
said as she gestured for me to follow her. She led me into some brush
up ahead. I followed her to a counter with a wise looking Techo behind
it.
“Hello,” Ginger started. “ I would like to purchase twenty jars.”
Ginger handed the blue body some coins.
“Ginger, I see you have brought a guest. I’m Wes the Techo. Welcome to
the Faerie Catching Zone. Both of you may catch ten Faeries each, one
per jar. Have a nice time!” Wes told us.
We walked into a miniature jungle. Just ahead of us Faeries roamed the
land.
“Go see what you can catch!” Ginger said as she ran through some leaves.
I stayed back and looked closely at those leaves. Something stirred.
Then I spotted it. An earth Faerie had been perched on the leaf. I scooped
her up, dumped her into the jar, and I wound the top tight. I walked ahead.
Several Faeries were everywhere.
I’d caught three earth Faeries, a fire Faerie, two air Faeries, two water
Faeries, a dark Faerie, and even a space Faerie, which had been loitering
around the treetops. Because I’d filled all my jars, it was time to find
Ginger.
I strolled to what seemed like the center of the place.
“GINGER?” I called.
No answer.
“GINGER?”
Still, no response. A lump knotted in my throat. Then it hit me.
The idea hit me like a heavy rock. I didn’t have to find Ginger. I had
brought my Neo Talkies with me. I’d given one to Ginger just before we
met Wes. I fished it out of my pack, which I’d been lugging around all
day. I flipped the switch on.
“Ginger? Are you there?” I asked the Talkie.
“Yes, what Quester?” Ginger’s static filled voice answered.
“Have you caught all of your Faeries?” I inquired.
“Yes,” she responded, “ I have. Where are you?”
“I’m in the center. But you don’t even need to know that. Just meet me
at Wes’s desk!” I chirped, eager to have shared my plan.
“Okay!” she replied as I shut the Neo Talkie off and headed to the leaves
where Ginger had taken off.
I hiked past the low-hanging leaves. There I found the cerulean Techo,
Wes waiting at the counter. My Chia friend wasn’t there yet. A green Kacheek
seemed to be waiting at the desk.
“You gonna catch Faeries too?” I questioned him.
“No. I’m just bored and this is where I like to hang out. Wes and me
talk, too. I’m Emerald. Were you waiting for some one?” He wondered just
as Ginger came trotting through the trees.
“I’m Quester,” I answered and then gestured to the orange girl next to
me. “And this is Ginger. I was waiting for Ginger. She wants to travel
with me when I leave the island. Would you?”
“Ginger this is Emerald,” I added.
“Oh I would love to travel with you!” he replied happily.
We all waved good-bye to Wes as we headed for a new adventure.
The End
