What Makes a Good NeoHome?

by chaval, with help from Kapili the purple Poogle

NeoHomes have become a very popular aspect of NeoPets, and so I think it's necessary for people to know what to do or not do.

First, you should think about what you want your home to look like. You may want to sketch it out on a piece of paper to avoid making a mistake with doors and placement, and therefore wasting money. You should also consider your budget. Don’t buy a house in Faerieland, realize you have very few NPs left and build your house out of bamboo! If you have 30,000 points or less, I would suggest buying some land in Neopia Central or Mystery Island. If you have more, go ahead and do what you like.

Looks are a big thing. You shouldn’t have a big jumbled mess with tons of rooms, made from just about everything there is, or another design that isn’t very logical. People decide a lot of things from your NeoHome, and I bet you won’t get that second position in a private guild for rich people if you have a two room straw hut. Common sense, people!

Furniture. Everyone wants it, and boy is it expensive. I’ve spent about 20,000 NP on furniture for two rooms alone. Now, don’t be whining because you don’t have enough money for that heart shaped bed. Dung and stone furniture (although very disgusting and uncivilized) is available for prices as low as 50 NP. I wouldn’t recommend it, but if you’re desperate, or going for that Tyrannian theme, it could be done. No one likes an empty house, so even if it’s only a couple chairs and a table, you should try to put furniture in every room.

I just love looking at themed houses. A bamboo room could contain Mystery Island furniture. A house in Faerieland could be made of cloud. Or you could theme individual rooms, and put a set of tiger furniture in one room, and Kauvara in the next. It definitely contributes to the looks factor, and people will comment on how nice your house is. I would definitely recommend it.

Extensions are great, but only if you are willing to upgrade several times. A transparentshield castle is a nice start, but with ripped wallpaper and clanking cans? I think not. Extensions are one of the first things that is seen when a user looks you up, so don’t leave dirt and weeds for your carpet; upgrade! If you are on the poor side, you should raise them three to five times for some moderate additions. The richer class might want to go all the way to the top for a really luxurious NeoHome

And as always, think of your pet(s), and never do anything that could jeopardize their happiness. “Mommy/Daddy, the rain is coming through, and the cardboard’s starting to smell funny,” should be something an owner should never hear!
