The Recovery
It had been a month since Lupina's awful wounds, and
she had still not awakened. Most of the pets, with the help of Emala,
Lily, Rosy and Amy, had found their homes and returned to their joyous
owners. But Lupina's friends were not in the least happy. They stood in
the Water Faerie's infirmary, gazing down at Lupina, who was still swathed
in bandages.
"I guess we've got a second Sleeping Beauty," Amy joked
half-heartedly.
"Sleeping Mummy, more like it," Emala added. They forced
themselves to chuckle, but the laughter soon stopped. How could they laugh
at Lupina's condition?
Suddenly, the mass of bandages moved a little. Amy,
Lily, Emala, and Rosy stood stock still, hardly daring to hope. Then a
groan arose from the bandaged head.
Amy's face broke out into a joyous smile. "Rosy, run
tell the Water Faerie! Hurry!"
Seconds later, the Water Faerie appeared in the room.
Quickly, she cut the bandages on Lupina's head and body. Lupina groaned
and shifted again, then she sat up. "What...where am I? What happened?
All I remember was a big metal bar coming down on my head...I tried to
stop it...then nothing..."
The Water Faerie made her lie down again. "You were terribly
wounded in a battle with Dr. Sloth. Your friends took care of him after
he gave you that awful head wound. You've been under special care for
a month now."
"What?! I've spent a whole month asleep?! No wonder I'm
so hungry!"
The Water Faerie shook her head. "I'm sorry, Lupina,
but you won't be able to eat for another few days, and you'll have to
stay in bed for a week after that. When you get out of bed, you will only
be allowed to walk around the infirmary-no stairs. That's for two weeks.
For four weeks, you can only eat baby food. You got some very deep wounds
from Sloth, and your insides are tender."
Lupina groaned. "No food for a few days and just baby
food for four weeks after that. No getting out of bed for a week and stay
in the infirmary for two weeks after that."
"Yes, and after that, supervision whenever you go on
stairs for a month, and then supervision whenever you go outside for a
month. Anyways, it'll still be a while until your legs heal, so you'll
need assistance getting around most of the time," the Water Faerie added.
"Oh help," moaned Lupina, lying back in bed. "I should
have been the one instead."
At that moment, Lupina's Puppyblew, Sparky, arose from
where he had been lying on the bedstand and jumped lightly onto Lupina's
chest, shaking his head. At that, everyone laughed.

For the next week, Sparky stayed on Lupina's chest and
didn't let her get up. At every meal, he carefully inspected each of Lupina's
spoonfuls of baby food to make sure there were no lumps. When she tried
to go down the stairs, he guarded them ferociously. If it hadn't been
for Sparky, there was no doubt Lupina would have broken a lot of the rules
that the Water Faerie set.
Finally, Lupina went home with Amy and her other pets.
Sparky continued to guard Lupina closely, making her obey all the rules.
He did everything from taking her on walks to preparing her food to make
sure she stayed on her diet. Soon she had progressed to fruits such as
bananas, but she was greatly disappointed when Burnumups were outlawed
to her all winter.
Finally, after almost a year of recovery, Lupina was
back as herself again, strong and healthy and ready for another adventure.
