Quote of the Week

'I can feel it, too. But I can’t get myself to dislike it. It seems more sad and lonely than anything else—like it just needs a little love. After all, I’m sure plenty of good things happened here, too, lots of laughter and peace and kindness.' She smiled. 'I think we can enjoy what’s beautiful about it and not emphasise the bad. Maybe that’ll help the bad go away. It doesn’t need to be here. It was never meant to be.'

Other Stories
"The Escape" by mucka33
I don't know how many days it's been, (weeks, maybe?), but I am still in the room. Cell, I mean. I am being treated as some form of prisoner, though what crime I've committed, I don't have a clue. I am brought food and water irregularly, but that's the extent of my interactions with anything outside of this cell. My days are spent dozing idly, walking in circles, or testing out my wings. I've discovered I can fly, though in the confines of the cell, I have difficulties. I dream of a time where I can go outside and fly, where an unforgiving stone wall won't limit me. All too suddenly, I'm aware there's someone else in my cell. When did they come in? I notice now that the door is open, and a pale light spills in, bright on my eyes. In the light stands someone just like me, but not like me all at the same time. They are small, round, and have two feet and no arms, but they do not have wings nor do they have a tail. Before I can speak, a masculine voice cuts me off with a harsh whisper. "We must be quiet. I'll explain later, just follow me." What other options do I have? The mysterious figure leaves the room cautiously, and with nothing better to do, I follow him. We arrive in a hallway dimly lit with wall torches. I see other doors like mine lining the long corridor. I distantly wonder if there are others like me behind them. "Come on," the Jubjub -- I can see him better now -- hisses at me. His fur is dark, but he has a white streak at the top of his head.

"Glass Shards" by ribbon_cute
In a world of purple, Shard was just a Carmariller. Not a blue spiky petpet of destruction like she hoped, but a simple brown and yellow Faerie apprentice to any Neopet she'd one day be assigned to. That thought drove her mad. Why? Why was she cursed to such a feeble, insignificant body? A prediction of the Faeries that she'd be a threat otherwise? Or just dumb luck? The only petpets who mattered were her family, though they weren't ideal. Teasing her unmenacing appearance, calling her 'Normie'. They were simply brutes as opposed to her personality, sharp as a glass shard and just as dangerous. They lived on a small island above Meridell, Darigan Citadel the petpet's family called it. Petpet Battles were always around the corner, free training and entertainment. There weren't any Petpet shops so Shard was free of the responsibility of having a Neopet owner. That was until she fell. It was a quick flash consisting of a rock hitting her wing (thrown by one of her unruly brothers), but off her humble island to a hill in the medieval land. From there it was shouts of "Faerie!" "It be a Faerie thing alright." "Send it back to the cloud land." Shard went from the despairing island to the whimsical Faerieland within a day. She hated it. Not the separation, not the anxiety of all these young pets judging her skill, not even the dainty annoying petpets in her cage, but the nerve of the Neopets who sent her here and are trying to sell her!

"How A Uni Gets Its Horn" by alex_bubbly
The night was young, as the sun was just beginning to set over Neopia. A young Uni was just being born at the hospital, but unfortunately his mother left him shortly after and his dad was never around. Like all abandoned Unis, this one in particular was given a name by one of the nurses and sent to the newborn ward on the third floor of the hospital. The nurse decided to name him Theodore, since she would be the one taking care of him around the clock. Every hour, on the hour, she came to check on little Theodore. It wasn’t very hard to pick him out amongst all of the Neopets, as he was the only Uni without his horn. To others, Theodore may not be their first choice when coming to adopt, but to Nurse Kayla, he was the most beautiful little boy she had ever laid her eyes on. She smiled down at him and stroked the top of his head until he fell asleep with his blanket and his hoof in his mouth. Nurse Kayla giggled, as she loved when the babies did this, since it portrayed their innocence. She sighed, wishing she had a baby of her own, and left. She knew it would be almost impossible to care for a child, since she was almost always at work. It wasn’t that she hadn’t thought about it before; she really had. She even had a nursey already set up at home in case the opportunity ever came up where she would be able to care for a child. As the weeks went by, many of the Neopets in the adoption ward had already been adopted and there were only a handful left, Theodore included.
