Revamping the Cemetery

by dinha_reeves

--------

It was a pleasant afternoon in the Haunted Woods and a Ghost Chia named Specter was resting on a tombstone in the game graveyard when his attention was suddenly drawn by the shout of Earl, an approaching Halloween Blumaroo.

"It's all wrong! It's all wrong!" shouted the Blumaroo in a clear tone of indignation.

"What are you talking about, Earl?"

"Well, look at this place, Specter!" Blumaroo pointed, waving his arms at the space around him. "Can't you see that this is wrong?!"

"But... what?" Without understanding, Specter looked around. Everything looked as usual, there was nothing different about the place and he couldn't understand what Earl was talking about.

     "We're in a graveyard, Specter, a CEMETERY!"

Ghost Chia put his hand on his chin. "Yeah... and what about it...?"

"Can't you see? This place is... nice!" Earl grimaced and then shook his head. "This is a cemetery, it's supposed to be scary and dark, not... nice and pleasant... Look, there are even butterflies here!" Earl sounded indignant at a pink butterfly that was landing on the gravestone behind Specter.

Upon hearing this, the Ghost Chia took another look around, now with a different perspective, and realized that this cemetery didn't even look like a cemetery. Apart from the tombstones of the deceased games, that cemetery was too neat for a spooky environment like the Haunted Woods.

"You're right." Specter agreed. "We need to do something. It's Halloween season and our cemetery can't look like a piece of the Faerieland!"

"I totally agree! Let's tidy this place up, starting with some cobwebs. Every spooky graveyard needs a few cobwebs!"

"Good idea!" Specter agreed. "We should get help. Maybe the other pets can have some thoughts on that too. What do you think?"

"Sure, the more, the merrier!" Nodded Earl. "We can make this place super scary that all the pets from Haunted Woods will be jealous."

"Haha, yeah, totally!" Laughed the Ghost Chia. "I'll get Wolfy to help us and also other friends."

Earl nodded and then started hanging some cobwebs between the trees and the gravestones, scaring away the butterflies that were around. "These butterflies... hunf... should be bats instead..."

"What are you doing, Earl?" He heard someone ask and when he looked back, he bumped into a Zombie Korbat.

"Betty!" he smiled excitedly. "You're the one I needed!"

She eyed him suspiciously. "What do you mean?!"

"Specter and I are giving the cemetery a revamp. Don't you think it looks very friendly for a cemetery in the Haunted Woods?"

Betty looked around. "Yeah, come to think of it, there's nothing haunted about it. The place is so... neat."

"I know right?! That's why I'm puttin' on these cobwebs, but all the help is appreciated."

"All right, what can I do to help?"

"Can you ask your bat friends for a hand? They can fly over here, it'll look much better than these colourful butterflies." He stuck out his tongue at the butterflies.

"Of course! They'll be more than happy to help us out. Cemetery is their favourite place!" Betty agreed cheerfully. "I'll be right back!"

Then Specter returned with Wolfy, a Halloween Lupe who had been assigned to take care of the trees. He already needed a good trunk to sharpen his claws and this was the perfect opportunity to do so. He also brought several bones that he had been saving to gnaw on so that he could leave them scattered on the ground.

     "Good idea, Wolfy!" Specter praised.

"Let's turn this place into a respectable cemetery!" Said Wolfy, very committed to the cause. Then he started scratching the trunks of the trees and breaking some branches to make them look more scary.

They were also joined by a Mutant Kacheek who brought some scary pumpkins. A Ghost Mynci with some other ghost meepits and meowclops and a Halloween Lenny who also brought some spyders that were scattered around the place.

Earl also put some old coffins there that he no longer used. Specter threw some dirt on the tombstones that had previously been clean and polished, as well as putting some moss in the corners and Wolfy took the opportunity to make some ‘monster’ footprints on the dirt.

"Wow, this place is looking amazing!" Said Betty with her bat friends who danced from one corner to another.

"Now this can be called the Games Graveyard!" Wolfy said.

"Hehe, the pets will be too scared to come here!" Specter agreed as he placed a Whoot inside a hollow tree trunk, with only its large yellow eyes showing in the darkness.

"This is going to be the scariest Halloween ever!" the Halloween Blumaroo said proudly.

Earl and Specter scattered some more dry leaves around the place while Betty and Wolfy fixed up the entrance to the place, leaving the gate crooked and looking old and scary. The Mutant Kacheek, the Ghost Mynci, and the Halloween Lenny scattered melted candles in a few spots, along with some old, rusty chains.

By the end, the place was completely unrecognizable. The butterflies that used to hang around were all gone, giving way to the many bats that had already made the place their new home. Monster footprints stamped the muddy paths, the tombstones covered in dust and moss gave the place an abandoned feel, while the spyders were already settling into the cobwebs scattered among the trees.

"Heck yeah! This place has gotten really creepy." Said Earl.

Everyone looked at the place in awe.

"Wow, it really is... scary that I even felt a chill here..." Betty commented.

An icy wind blew, scattering the dry leaves on the ground and making everyone shiver a little. The sun had already set and the place was completely dark, lit only by moonlight and the few melted candles.

"It's too scary, I'd say..." Wolfy muttered.

They looked at each other and the smiles faded from their faces. The place was dark, frightening, and silent. Just the way an abandoned game graveyard should be.

Then the sound of a dry branch breaking echoed and everyone screamed. Earl jumped into Specter's lap and Betty hid behind Wolfy. The Kacheek, Lenny, and Mynci had already disappeared.

"Where did they go?" Specter wondered and then heard a shout:

"We're here!" It was the Mutant Kacheek. They looked in the direction of the voice and realized that the three of them were hiding inside a tomb. "We’ll stay here until dawn, it's too scary out there!"

"You know what, save me some space. I'm too scared to stay here!" Earl was the first to say and ran into the tomb as well.

"Hey, this was all your idea," Specter complained, but when a new snapping noise startled him, he didn't stay behind to try and figure out what it was and went straight after Betty and Wolfy.

"A little space, please!" Grumbled Wolfy, squeezing himself between his friends inside the tomb. "No way I’m gonna stand at the entrance. I dunno what’s in there."

Earl sighed in defeat. “I miss the butterflies…”

"Shut up, Earl!" said Specter, annoyed because he'd have to spend the night there, but he had no choice, was too scared to leave. “Let’s just sleep…”

     The End.
