The Neopian’s Guide to Wild Swimming

by kadface

--------

Many aquatic Neopians find the call of the sea too great to resist, and can usually be seen diving headlong into the waves along the shore. Others are more reluctant, preferring the home comforts of land or the gentle rippling of the lakes.

Nonetheless, a shared love of water means that the sport of wild swimming is becoming increasingly popular across Neopia. Wild swimming is the art of outdoor swimming in natural pools, rivers, lakes or the oceans themselves. The benefits of wild swimming are obvious to the scientifically minded observer, providing exposure to open air and cold waters to fortify the body. Some locations offer peaceful solitude to calm the soul, whilst others provide risk and excitement to fire the senses and get the blood flowing.

Of course, this wide ranging sport is not reserved for only those capable of breathing underwater. Indeed, it is fast becoming a favourite activity for all types of Neopets. From splashing Scorchios to wave-faring Wockies, the sport is open to all comers.

This guide serves to provide both the prospective and professional swimmer with useful information on the best places to bathe, submerge and immerse oneself in the waters around Neopia.

     Kiko Lake

“Placid” is the term that is most commonly used to describe the still waters of Kiko Lake, and they serve to provide the gentlest of introductions to the sport of wild swimming. The flat surface and near limitless visibility of the lake encourage even the most hydrophobic Neopian to take a dip. Vast kelp forests provide environmental points of interest, but limited variation tempers the impact to the budding ecologist.

The community of Kiko Lake welcome swimmers, of all shapes, sizes and abilities. The bravest of the non-aquatic Neopians may wish to hold their breath and explore the village submerged beneath - taking in the sights of the neatly constructed homes and manicured coral gardens. After you have had a dip, the Kiko Lake Treats shop is sure to provide a warm welcome, offering refreshment and a spot to recover.

     Maraqua

Whilst Maraqua might appear to be an obvious place to go wild swimming, the region holds little interest for those unable to breathe underwater. The Maraquans understandable caution to outsiders means that the city is located at extreme depths, and, by design, is not visible from the surface. Accordingly, there is little to draw the attention of the average Neopian away from the limitless blue of the ocean.

Nonetheless, the surface proffers some interest for its exposure to the open seas. Regular squalls and storms provide the opportunity for thrills for those willing to dive into the rolling waves. The need for boat coverage to access and leave the Maraquan region ensures a high level of safety for all bathers.

     The Lost Desert

Swimming? In a desert? Yes, despite initial appearances, the Lost Desert still allows plenty of options for the canny Neopian to enjoy wild swimming. Besides the numerous oases used by the desert dwellers, a broad river separates the Cities of Sakhmet and Qasala and provides ample opportunity for bathing. A popular activity in this region is to take a rubber tube and float down the river, enjoying the sights of the Pyramids and Coltzan’s shrine passing gently by. The Lost Desert provides a peaceful retreat for outdoor swimming, with limited serious danger and bountiful views and attractions.

However, wild swimmers should take care, as the river is also used for the popular pastime of Tug-O-War, with the loser falling headlong into the waters. It is therefore recommended that all potential bathers double check for upcoming competitions before attempting to swim. More than one Neopian has been caught out in the middle of a contest before now.

      Mystery Island

A tropical paradise, the seas around Mystery Island have been a firm favourite for wild swimmers ever since its discovery. The soft slope of the beach into the waves provides an easy, ambling entry for any Neopian approaching the ocean. The warm shoreline provides a wide variety of life for the Eyrie-eyed neopet. Perhaps you may be so lucky as to see some of the Petpets of old Maraqua making their way to the rock pool?

One of the greatest benefits of taking to the waters of Mystery Island is the warmth of the air. After having a swim, all that is left is to simply lounge on the beach to dry up in no time at all. Perhaps treat yourself to a coconut drink, served up by any number of friendly Kougras, to rehydrate?

     Shenkuu

The fast flowing river of Shenkuu allows the daredevil Neopian to show off their expertise and skill in the navigation of rapids. Never fear, for the numerous safety patrols that have been arranged for the board riders of Shenkuu ensure near complete safety for anyone daring to take the plunge.

To avoid clashes with the rapid surfers, Shenkuu have introduced dedicated times for swimmers. Everybody is welcome to dive between the spray and sample the thrill of tumbling down the waterfalls. For improved safety, the river patrol has carefully curated the river to provide deep pools at the base of every fall, guaranteeing a soft landing.

After a day spent gambling in the swells, a game of Godori is sure to quieten the mind and slow the heart rate.

     Krawk Island

Take care, for the waters around Krawk island are notoriously treacherous to the unwary Neopian. Not only do you have to contend with the unyielding current and whirlpools, but the Krawken continues to make his ominous presence felt to those that brave the murky depths. Marauding pirates provide further risk to the unprepared Neopian.

However, many consider the dangers to be well worth it for the abundance of wildlife found in the cool waters. The sea life is second to none, providing the greatest diversity of fauna and flora anywhere in Neopia, with some species being found exclusively in Krawk Island. Another reason that Krawk island is home to the greatest thrill seekers of the open waves is the littering of the seafloor with uncountable numbers of sunken wrecks. Perhaps you might even find some long forgotten treasure still hidden in one?

After returning from the bitter cold, a tankard of grog at the Golden Dubloon is sure to warm the heart, and maybe put some hair on your chest.

We trust that this guide has provided some useful hints and guidance to encourage you to dust off your wetsuit, clean up your goggles and join in the fray. We hope that we shall soon see many more Neopians seeking the adventure and excitement of swimming outdoors!
