95 Signs You’ve Been Addicted to Neopets Forever

by _brainchild_

--------

So... I have been playing this site for, well... forever, it seems, and a lot of interesting things have happened in those many years. (There are a lot of people who have been here even longer!) I remember playing Neopets when I was in middle school. Now I’m an adult with a college degree, and I’m still here! In celebration of the 950th issue of the Neopian Times, I present to you 95 signs you’ve been addicted to Neopets forever without any sign of quitting. Please note that not all of these apply to me, but a large portion of them do! Without further ado:

      1. You remember the original site layout.

     2. You remember a time when pets couldn’t wear clothes yet, and all pets used the old style of art.

     3. You remember a time before NC and Premium.

     4. You were disappointed when Grundo’s Gym was shut down because it was “a little over-generous with the Neopoints.” (Editorial 208)

     5. You remember Theme Parks.

     6. You remember when 100,000 nps was considered a lot.

     7. You remember when the main Neopian Shops restocked at set intervals. (They don’t anymore; nowadays, restocks are completely random.)

     8. During the Champions of Meridell war, you joined either Meridell or Darigan... and then promptly annihilated your enemies.

     9. You freed Jhuidah from the fish bowl.

     10. You played the Darkest Faerie console game as soon as it came out.

     11. You bought Neopets TCG booster packs in real-life stores and gleefully redeemed the codes, hoping for a Peedleedoo.

     12. You went to a Limited Too store and got a virtual prize code.

     13. You remember old plots such as Curse of Maraqua and the Tale of Woe.

     14. You completed the Altador Mini-Plot as soon as possible.

     15. You played in the first Altador Cup, and remember the elimination-style rounds.

     16. When you created your account, you remember claiming 150 NC for free as a newbie gift instead of the “NC Welcome Gift” item that is offered today. Or maybe you started playing before the NC Mall was introduced, and claimed the 150 NC once it had become available.

     17. The first Neopet you created is a whopping 4000 days old, or possibly even older!

     18. You have a child of your own now who is also obsessed with Neopets, or maybe a few children!

     19. You remember when Pirate Paint Brushes were higher-end.

     20. You remember the age of D/UC/Ks, in which Draiks and Krawks traded for UCs.

     21. You remember drawing your Neopets in class once you were done with your work.

     22. Your high school Spanish teacher liked your artwork, and you drew a Pepper Chia for her to hang on her wall, so she did. Other kids, inspired by you, drew her pictures, so she also hung up their work, too.

     23. You crashed into the wall repeatedly while playing Moltara Run for Atlas of the Ancients.

     24. You remember a time before Faerie Quest Fortune Cookies. Without the cookies, Fountain Faerie Quests were only available through a random event, and, due to their rarity, traded for some kinds of UCs.

     25. You remember a time when Baby, Maraquan, and Mutant Neopets didn’t have many wearable options.

     26. You remember the release of the Forgotten Shore Map, and map pieces selling for very high prices when they first came out.

     27. You remember a bunch of rare items being auctioned for low prices to celebrate ONE TRILLION page views on the site.

     28. You remember wracking your brain over the final puzzle from the Krawk Island Disappearance event.

     29. You remember submitting your guesses for the Desert Diplomacy logic puzzle... and hoping you got them all right.

     30. You remember when v2 Neohomes made their debut.

     31. You remember when Faerieland was in the clouds.

     32. You remember when Hasees were expensive because they weren’t yet being given out by a daily. You also remember grabbing a Hasee for your Neopet off the Shop Wizard the moment the price went down.

     33. You read a distraught board from someone was understandably upset about their UC Grey Ixi being converted by a Random Event (before UCs became immune).

     34. One of your pets was hit by Boochi in Year 13... and you decided to keep her that way! (Can you tell I am talking about myself?)

     35. You breathed a sigh of relief when all colour-changing Random Events were removed for good.

     36. Following the introduction of the Coincidence, you searched your SDB for Brown Sauce, Box of Wheat Flakes, Dried Apricots, Dried Prunes, Semolina, Landfish, and Yellow Growth, and either sold them all for a nice sum or used them yourself for the Coincidence.

     37. You remember spinning the Wheel of Slime.

     38. You valiantly fought in the War of the Obelisk.

     39. You remember previous staff members, such as Dragona, Snarkie, and Country Queen.

     40. You remember the “WUT” section of the Neopian Times Editorial.

     41. You remember when shops could only hold items priced up to 99,999 nps, the Trading Post would only take 800k, and the auctions would only allow a starting price of up to 10 million with an increment of 10 million.

     42. You remember being super happy with your first morphing potion restock... at the Almost Abandoned Attic, of all places!

     43. You remember the massive server migration of Year 16, and you had to find ---gasp!!!--- something else to do besides Neopets while the site was out for two days. Maybe you even went outside. I didn’t, though---I played other types of video games.

     44. You were glad that the Neopocalypse avatar was re-released because you missed it the first time around.

     45. You remember frequent site lag following the migration.

     46. You remember when some Neocash and item prizes were given out to everyone as a thanks for playing the site throughout the lag, and one of them was a Meepit, thus causing massive deflation of this previously rare item.

     47. You remember feeling genuinely sorry for the person who invested in Meepits before this happened.

     48. You remember some of the NP prizes from redeeming NC cards deflating because they were put into the Upcycle Cookie prize pool. You also remember nabbing some good-looking NP furniture for your v2 Neohome once the prices had gone down for this reason.

     49. You remember “adopting” tons of hungry pound pets during the April Fool’s Prank of Year 16.

     50. You remember the front page being full of Jumpstart promotions for the April Fool’s Prank of Year 17.

     51. You remember the ages of manually clearing shops by purposefully buying junk in the hopes that better items would stock, and you jumped for joy when the auto clear was born!

     52. Many of the items you used to restock for profit before the auto clear are no longer worth buying nowadays.

     53. You loved Habitarium, and you were disappointed when it was retired.

     54. You also loved playing Key Quest, and you wish it would return.

     55. Speaking of Key Quest, you bought Key Quest plushies off of the shelves at real-life stores and redeemed the prize codes.

     56. You remember your frustration with people quitting Key Quest when you were about to win.

     57. You never got a paint brush from Key Quest, despite many gold keys redeemed... Or maybe you were lucky and got one on your first gold key.

     58. You remember a time before Baelia and the Soup Faerie gave out quests.

     59. You enjoyed playing through the 120 levels of Ghoul Catchers, and remember wracking your brain over the infamous level 109.

     60. You remember hoping for a Spring Gift Basket from a Random Event.

     61. You remember when Magical Chia Pops were expensive because Random Events weren’t yet giving them out.

     62. You immediately wanted a Pastel Draik as soon as it was released.

     63. You remember cheering for your contestant of choice in the Spooky Food Eating Contest 23-24 times a day in the hopes of winning a paint brush...but you never were that lucky. (Or maybe you were. I wasn’t.) The best I managed to get was a Halloween Tonu Morphing Potion.

     64. You remember when Trudy was introduced!!!

     65. You remember the introduction of ---drum roll--- the Vandagyre!!!

     66. You remember when Rukis were made limited edition to make room for the Vandagyre on the 8 by 6 grid of unlimited pets you can choose from when creating a pet.

     67. You remember when wearable items didn’t have a coat hanger icon yet, leaving you guessing... or running to Jellyneo for information.

     68. You remember claiming your first stat-boosting cupcake on your Neopet’s birthday.

     69. You remember playing AAA’s Revenge when it first came out.

     70. You remember when Trudy introduced item prizes in addition to Neopoints.

     71. You remember choosing between Candy, Marble, and Floral for the next paint brush colour.

     72. You remember when Kaia was introduced.

     73. You jumped for joy when the amount of pet slots per account was boosted from 4 to 5!

     74. You jumped for joy when the amount of pet slots per account was boosted from 5 to 6!

     75. ...And again, when the sale of additional pet slots in the NC Mall was announced!

     76. You ran outside screaming with joy when the sale of UC pets in the NC Mall was announced. The whole neighbourhood heard you, and your parents were giving you strange looks.

     77. One of your pets has won a gold PPL trophy with an exceptionally aged Petpet which you attached yourself when you were in high school.

     78. You remember impulsively bidding on a Golden Shell the day the Stamp Collector – Sea Shells avatar was released... and not regretting it at all, since the price only continued to climb.

     79. Speaking of stamp avatars, you were really excited when many of them were released, and they got you into stamp collecting! (Or maybe you weren’t excited. I was!) I would LOVE to see an Other III stamp avatar someday!

     80. You remember the Wraith Resurgence plot---and beating all the enemies with your buff battle pet.

     81. You made sure to log into the site every day of the Fiendish Formations part of the Wraith Resurgence so you wouldn’t miss out on the avatar.

     82. Your roommate wasn’t nearly as enthusiastic about your “Neopets obsession” as you.

     83. You remember the old format of Charity Corner... but you loved the perk shop so much better! (Or at least I did. Maybe you preferred the old format.) I preferred the perk shop because it offered useful perks, such as painting my Draik Robot or lowering the required scores for game avatars, and didn’t deflate rare items like the old format did. (Restockers, rejoice!)

     84. You were disappointed when the Zapped perk was changed.

     85. You remember when Neopets hosted a booth at Comic Con and an after-party nearby in Year 20, but you were bummed because it was too far away from home. (Or maybe you were one of the lucky few who got to attend! Enjoy your real-life Blue Vandagyre plushie.)

     86. You remember when Neopets again hosted a booth at Comic Con and an after-party nearby in Year 21, and again were bummed because it was too far.

     87. You rejoiced when the avatar from the Year 21 Comic Con was made available to all players, and not just those with a virtual prize code!

     88. You were exceptionally disappointed when Comic Con was cancelled for Years 22 and 23... and sat at home behind the safety of your computer monitor.

     89. You went hunting for Dragoyles.

     90. You sent your Neopet to jump through portals in Brightvale... and they promptly came back with an illness.

     91. You remember choosing between Steampunk, Origami, Toy, and Burlap in the new pet colour poll... and you were excited when all four were released due to popular demand!

     92. You downloaded Legends and Letters, and you had a lot of fun getting the crossover rewards on the main site.

     93. You guided Lyra through the Ruins of Thanyros.

     94. You remember Nick Neopia coming back and flipping pages upside down... or maybe you’ve been here so long that you even remember him the first time he appeared, way back in Year 5!

     95. In Year 21, your mom found an old, unused Neocash card in the cupboards that depicted Faerieland IN THE CLOUDS...That’s how old it was. (10 years old!!!) Apparently she bought it for you when you were in middle school, and then she forgot about it. She gave it to you, and you redeemed it, since they never expire. That shows how often the cupboards of your house get cleaned!

As you can see, the events referenced range from very distant to far more recent. Whether you are a veteran player or brand new, I hope you enjoy this game and become just as addicted as I am, if you are not already. Neopets is a healthy obsession! It’s something fun to work toward and pass the time. Just don’t show up late to your ACTUAL job in real life because you lost track of time playing Neopets. You need that job to buy Neocash! (Yes, I clearly have my priorities in the right place.) Anyway, enjoy!
