Inflation is Bananas!

by iwonder

--------

With inflation the way it is in the Neopian economy it can sometimes be hard to afford even the smallest of luxuries, for example some fresh exotic fruit. But what could a banana really cost, 10 Neopoints? What’s that you say? Bananas cost 60 THOUSAND Neopoints?! Well, that’s just… well, bananas. I guess it’s better than the temporary price of 996,000 last year, but still. Not everyone is lucky enough to be able to spend such an amount for a midday snack. For the less fortunate consumers we’ll need to look somewhere else for our daily dose of fruity goodness. Here are some suggestions on what you can use to substitute bananas with, for all possible banana uses. Hopefully you’ll find something that suits your tastes, and your budget! Prices listed are subject to price fluctuations, especially in this economy.

     Tchea Fruit

Ah, the trusty tchea fruit. You can taste both the blue and yellow! Funnily enough, the blue bits taste like bananas, and the yellow bits taste like blueberries. Strange, but it works. Especially as a substitute for when you’re making blueberry banana muffins! They’re cheap at only 8 Neopoints, but can also be won from the fruit machine. And it doesn’t even cost you to spin, that’s a win!

     Tri-Nana

This weird looking thing is actually three bananas mutated into one! For only around 100 Neopoints, this is a real bargain. Why pay a lot for one, when you can pay a little for three-in-one? At only 95 Neopoints, you could get well over 600 tri-nanas for the price of one regular banana. What a steal!

     Fuzzly Pear

A popular fruit in Tyrannia, this 85 Neopoint pear works well in warm dishes. Perhaps you could make pear bread, or some diced pears with white chocolate on top? Just make sure to peel it, you don’t want all that fuzz stuck between your front teeth.

     Brightvale Berry

If you’re looking for a yellow fruit to put in your fruit salad, look no further than the bright yellow brightvale berry. What it tastes like? No one really knows! It only grows in Brightvale, but since that’s a happy and bright place, the berry can’t be all that bad… can it? Give it a try, at least it has the same colour as a banana! You could win this berry from the Wheel of Knowledge, or spend a measly 13 Neopoints if you’d rather buy it right away.

     Cherimoya

This green fruit tastes like a cross between a banana and a pineapple! A wonderful choice for smoothies, fruit salads, and tropical drinks. It’s one of the most expensive items on this list, coming in at around 1,000 Neopoints. However, with the combination of banana and pineapple flavour, you’re basically getting two fruits for the price of one.

     Grenanna

If the yellow colour of a banana isn’t the most important factor to you, why not try a grenanna? It’s almost like a banana, only green. The taste is slightly more bitter, but that could be good for a grenanna jam, or more savory dishes, like a grenanna curry or as a side dish to a chicken and black bean quinoa bowl. Like the cherimoya, this costs around 1,000 Neopoints, so you might still want to use it as an additive, rather than the main dish.

     Fresh Fruit Surprise Omelette

Are you tired of chopping fruits, and spending time preparing a snack? This ready-made omelette is perfect for those days when you cannot be bothered with cooking, but also want to eat something borderline healthy. It’s filled with juicy pieces of fruit! Which fruits, you ask? Well, that’s a surprise! For only 45 Neopoints, this is a steal. Speaking of stealing, you might be lucky enough to pick one up for free from the Giant Omelette in Tyrannia.

     Furanga Fruit

Some people use banana peels as a cleaner. Yes, it’s true! The texture and oil of the peel is slightly abrasive, which works well to remove dust and dirt, especially on house plants. It also gives off a nice tropical smell. The furanga fruit can also be used this way, although its most common use is to wipe away chalk from blackboards. We love a multipurpose fruity cleaner! Hopefully it doesn’t make your house smell like chalk. For only 70 Neopoints, this multi-purpose fruit can be yours.

     Skeem

This purple and orange fruit is both tangy and sweet, which would go great in desserts. Just be careful, the seeds aren’t soft like the gooey inside of a normal banana, but unfortunately rock hard. Make sure to remove them before you bake any pies, or you risk losing a tooth (or two). It’s pretty cheap too, only 55 Neopoints.

     Strypedillo

Is your favourite dessert the oldie but goodie banana split? Who could blame you, the combination of banana and ice cream is hard to beat, especially when served with chocolate sauce and one of those tiny glittering sparklers. It might be hard to beat this wonderful combination, but why not try substituting the banana with a strypedillo? This fruit goes great with vanilla ice cream, just remember to get rid of the tough skin before you bite into it. It’s also one of the cheapest fruits on the list, clocking in at only 17 Neopoints.

     Can Telephone

If you have been using bananas as a toy and pretending to call your friends with it, you can replace it with a can telephone. Tie two cans together with a string, and put the can to your ear. Tell your friend to say something into the other can. You now have a working telephone! Much better than a squishy banana, and a lot cheaper. You could make it yourself from used cans, or buy one premade for only 11 Neopoints. Bonus points for being reusable, since it won’t rot if you forget it in your toy chest.

     Carrot Squirt Gun

Speaking of using bananas as a toy, if you have been pointing it at people and pretending it’s a weapon, why not buy yourself a carrot squirt gun instead? A great way to cool yourselves down in the summer months, and it even kind of looks like a banana. If you squint a little. Don’t worry, this won’t actually hurt anyone, it’s just water! Trying to make this toy yourself is a bit trickier than the can telephone, but luckily you can buy one for just 20 Neopoints.

Hopefully you’ve found some replacement for your specific banana needs in this short guide, whether that be a snack, a cleaning supply or a toy. Everyone deserves to enjoy life’s little luxuries, like exotic fruits, even on a limited Neopoints budget! For me personally, I think I will be buying some tri-nanas and making a tri-nana smoothie. Even if you did not find a good substitute, learning that a simple banana is so inflated might give you an idea for a side hustle. After all, there’s always money in the banana stand business.
