Petpet Name: Cubit Owner: noscete Pet Name: Zirakuna Breed: Cubett About Cubit: Cubettes have hard lives, always feeling like square pegs in round holes. They aren’t the cutest Petpets around, and most Neopians assume that Cubettes aren't very smart, either. I suppose I always knew that that was how they felt about Cubettes, and so I just figured that I would stay in that pet store forever. For a time in my life, I simply swam in circles in my tank at the pet store. That’s where I'd been for as long as I could remember, and that’s where I expected that I'd be staying for the foreseeable future. At least that's what I thought, until one day when a fat, clumsy, and rather excitable Tuskaninny bumbled in. She was as awkward as all get out, and for a second I even thought that she was uglier than a Spyder. “THAT ONE!” she cried, pointing a floppy paw my way. In that moment I swam one more circle before looking up at her, just to make sure that she was seriously pointing at me. She was. In fact, by the time I finished my little swim, she had pressed her wet nose right up against the glass, staring. I was frightened; my friends had all left the tank (they being cute little creatures, unlike me with my hard, geometric edges). I was alone, and I had grown to enjoy the solitude. I could think, I could observe; in short, I could forget that I was alone, and pretend that the other pets in the store were my friends. I tried to hide in the corner of the tank, hoping the loud flopping animal would think me too dull and leave. I was happy with the way things were. Just as I swam behind a little plastic castle, though, she thrust her paw into the water and pulled me out. Into a plastic bag I then went. “Isn’t she the cutest?” the Tuskaninny squealed. I tried to cover my ear holes, but alas my fins are much too short for such a dramatic gesture. Instead I sighed a bubbly sigh and tried to reconcile myself to this new fate. The Tuskaninny held me (well, stuck-in-a-bag me) close to her chest and bumbled out the door, as clumsily and excitedly and downright ridiculously as when she had arrived. It was a long walk back to her house, and unable to contain herself she chatted and chatted to me the entire way. “I’ve never had a Petpet before. Do you eat a lot? Gee, we should probably find that out, huh! Maybe I can take you fishing...” I was puzzled by that statement; apparently so was she, as she giggled and quickly added, “Oh, who am I kidding? You can’t take a fish fishing.” She kept babbling and I asked myself where had I gone wrong -- in what way was I adorable? How could she choose me? My questions, however, were then answered. She held the bag up to her face and spoke slowly, softly. “Let’s call you Cubit. You seem to be thinking so many things in that well-shaped head of yours.” My head is well-shaped, I thought conceitedly. “I’m so happy we found each other. Now I’ll have a friend, and I think... I think everyone needs a friend. Even a smart little Cubett like you.” She was quiet for the first time since we had met nearly an hour ago. As she walked along, I thought back on my existence thus far. I’d been a pet shop pet, pretending that life there was all that I needed. In reality, I had needed a friend all along. This outgoing Tuskaninny was just the friend I had never admitted was necessary. During my epiphany she continued to chat, telling me all of her lovely plans. "We'll go swimming together, because swimming is by far my favorite and, well, let's face it, that's about all you can do. Also I'll read to you every night, because you need the intellectual stimulation." It was adorable, and I felt myself beginning to like her. We arrived at the house. She put me in a large tank by her bed, and whispered, “We’re home, friend.”
