Neopian Profiles: The Gelert

by snow_wolf34

NEOPIA CENTRAL - As you know, there are many species of Neopets in the World. Forty-six, to be exact, with doubtless more to be discovered. At the time this article was written, there were a total of 56,921,660 pets owned. That's quite a lot. Every week, I will bring you a pet profile. This week, I will bring you a pet that is in the Top Ten--the Gelert.

At press time, there were 2,377,514 Gelerts out of 56,921,660 pets, ranking it as the 5th top pet. Pretty good, considering the number of species, and some of its contenders. Though it is in the top ten, there is very little press about these animals. Perhaps they don't like the limelight. Maybe that's why they're so popular. Let's get a little history on these animals first.

The Gelerts are some of the oldest species in Neopia. They were around when books were 10 Neopoints, there was only one world, and you couldn't paint your pet. They have gone through one name change and three 'facelifts' if you will. Originally they were known as Polypups. They had low-slung, fat bodies, with funny ears. The reminded one of something the late Dr. Seuss may have drawn. Polypups were aquatic animals; at least that's what their description read, so long ago. They were not very popular back then. Then, about two years ago, they under went a major change. They were transformed into cute puppies, with long ears and tails, thin body, and long legs. No longer were they Polypups, they were Gelerts. Immediately they gained instant popularity. Then, maybe six months ago, they underwent another change, though not as drastic. Their popularity went sky high, with their numbers climbing everyday

Their 'official' description reads: "Many Neopian legends tell tales of a Gelert's selfless acts of courage. Once you befriend one, you can guarantee you will have a faithful pal that will never let you down." Sounds like what a real-life dog should be. Could this be why they are so popular? Let's find out. Using the Neopet Chat board, I have asked these questions:

"What do you like best about the Gelert?"

Some answers to the question are as follows:

Pixieprincess002 - "I love every thing about them. That was the first Neopet I got."

Puppylovenyc - "It's friendly and cute."

Snow_Wolf34: Right now, I would like to share an interview with a Mr. Hunter Bryce34, who is a rainbow Gelert. Mr. Bryce, thank you for sharing your time with us.

Mr. Hunter Bryce34: Oh, no problem, and please, call me Hunter.

SW: OK, Hunter, do you like about being a Gelert? And what do you like most about being one?

HB: Yes, I do. Well, the thing I like most about being one are my long legs. I love being able to run.

SW: Well, that is important for a game of fetch. For our readers, when were you born?

HB: I was born on the 29 day of Swimming, Year 3.

SW: So you were after the Polypups.

HB: Yes, I was, but from my encounters with older Gelerts who were once Polypups, they generally like there new form better.

SW: So, as you may have noticed, there are few products available for specifically Gelerts. What do you think about this, and is there any plan for Gelerts to make some protest about it?

HB: I think it is unfortunate, but one must remember, we are generally peaceful species, and we don't really mind about the lack of Battledome items, but it would be nice to have more books and such. No, I don't believe there is anything being planned, but I will let you know. Also, there has not been a Gelert in any of the plots for new worlds, which I think is very racist.

SW: Well, thank you. One last thing, before you go, what do you think about the new world?

HB: I think it's going to be very exciting, but I'm a little confused about the obsession with marrows. But I think it's great that there are two new species!

SW: Thank you for your time. As you can see, not only are they cute, they're polite.

Perhaps some people liked the amount of colours the Gelert can be painted in: Checkered, Christmas, Cloud, Electric, Faerie, Fire, Gold, Purple, Rainbow, Shadow, Spotted, and Strawberry. A wide array of coat types assures that everyone will find something they like. Surprisingly though, Gelert morphing potions are not cheap, so this means that many people who want a Gelert either have to get rid of a pet, (something which I am STRONGLY against) or create another account, unless they want to shell out the 85,000 for a green morphing potion. Those of you who have four Neopets, I suggest complaining to Neopets to have Kauvara make more potions!

Although they are the 5th ranked Neopet, how come we don't see more of them around? For example, there are few specialty battle items available. And there are fewer books and no key rings at all! And in all the plots for new worlds, there has never been a Gelert character. Why is it that such a pet can be so popular, yet have no mention at all? Well, to this author, that is an unknown, and only Neopet Staffers can answer that.

Well, that about wraps it up for this article. I hope you enjoyed the first instalment of Neopian Profiles. Next time: Lenny - To Smart for its Own Good? Or Just Misunderstood?
