The Gallery of Heroes: A Comprehensive Guide

by jjensen687

--------

When thinking over my submission for the thousandth issue of the Neopian Times, I was uncertain. Perhaps a comic? Maybe a list article? A short story? Should I strive for my usual tone, or go for something more heartwarming, more sentimental? One thousand issues is no joke. Well over two decades of coverage of Neopian news, stories, and art. How in the world could I possibly capture the massive milestone that is the thousandth issue?

I sat on it for a long while. Pondered and explored and poked around the wonderful land of Neopia. Finally, in a flash of inspiration, I found my topic: What better way to celebrate 1,000 issues of community-driven work than by talking about some of the heroes that inspire us?

Within the Defenders of Neopia HQ lobby- a building that itself resides within the plaza of Neopian Central- sits two books. One is a deep red, a frightening horned figure etched into the metal plate on its cover. This book is the Gallery of Evil, a detailed summary of the most nefarious villains to ever grace the Neopian landscape. This book, dear reader, is not the subject of this article; it is too evil, too frightening, to cover here. Perhaps another day.

Opposite the red book is a blue one. With gold filigree and an inspiring winged shield upon its cover, this book inspires bravery, confidence, and pride. This book is the Gallery of Heroes. Where the Gallery of Evil documents all of the villains in Neopia, the Gallery of Heroes documents the most heroic souls, those who live to defend our beloved Pets and communities. Without Neopia, there could be no Neopian Times; it is thanks to these heroes, perhaps, that these publications continue.

In this article, I hope to summarize each of these heroes, share their stories, and remind you- the reader- of their brave and selfless acts. Perhaps hearing of these heroes will inspire you to serve the Neopian community in your own way. Not all heroes wear capes, as detailed by some of these entries, and you are just as capable of changing the world for the better as Judge Hog or Hannah.

     Now, let’s start exploring!

     1 - Jeran

If you’re well-versed in Neopian history, you may recall the Battle for Meridell in Y6. The relationship between Meridell and Darigan Citadel has always been fraught. Tension reached a boiling point early in Y6, with Lord Kass releasing millions of frightening and evil soldiers upon Meridell. Jeran, a noble blue Lupe, led the pivotal attack on the Citadel. While his leadership led to the victory of Meridell, it was not without cost; Jeran slipped from the floating land mass and plummeted. Worry not, dear reader- he was saved by an air faerie. With the kingdom he so diligently served saved from Lord Kass’ evil grasp, he now resides safely (and, we hope, calmly) with his little sister Lisha.

(Inspired by Jeran’s story? A great deal of merchandise exists that is inspired by this hero. Decorate your pet’s bedroom with a Jeran Bed, Jeran Pillow, and Jeran Poster. Add a Jeran Usuki to your collection. Read about his battles and victories in The Battles of Jeran and Jeran My Hero.)

     2 - Space Faerie

The Space Faerie was previously a rather mysterious figure, choosing to operate largely privately. However, she has become much more actively involved in Neopian happenings recently- perhaps you recall seeing her during the Negg Festival? The Space Faerie is tasked with a monumental challenge: Defend the world of Neopia from spaceborne threats. Primarily, this involves stopping the evil schemes of Dr. Sloth, and protecting Kreludor and the Virtupets Space Station in the process. Her job isn’t an easy one, but she does it with pride, keeping everyone safe from what lies beyond the stars.

(There’s an ample amount of Space Faerie items to commemorate this extraterrestrial defender. When doing your daily quests, you might find a Space Faerie Doll as your weekly prize. Start your day with a bowl of Space Faerie Cereal or a delicious Space Faerie Donut. Add a Space Faerie Stamp to your collection- or its much rarer counterpart, the Inverted Space Faerie Stamp.)

     3 - Fyora

With all that’s been happening in Faerieland recently, how could we possibly ignore Fyora? Queen Fyora rules over the faeries, known for her kindness and generosity. She also runs the Hidden Tower, a place where she sells rare and powerful wares in an effort to raise money for her kingdom. Even the most powerful among us can’t escape the need for funding! Fyora represents peace, unity, and hope for many. Now if only she could inspire an Altador Cup win for Faerieland…

(Being a queen, Fyora has a great deal of products inspired by her. A Fyora Bobblehead, a Fyora Doll, a Fyora Gnome, a Fyora Homemade Ice Cream Maker… you can even buy a Fyora Toilet, which feels a bit excessive, no?)

     4 - Lisha

We talked briefly about Lisha earlier, mentioning her only as Jeran’s younger sister. This brave young Aisha was equally pivotal in the battle against Darigan Citadel, using her magic to help defeat the cruel Lord Kass and save King Skarl from the magical charms of the evil Court Dancer. Without her, it’s very possible that Meridell wouldn’t exist- certainly not, at least, free from the grasp of Lord Kass. Most well-known for her red glasses and magic wand, Lisha now resides safely with her brother in Meridell.

(Lisha doesn’t have quite as much merchandise available as her older brother, but there’s still some products on the market for Lisha superfans. Five trading cards feature Lisha’s likeness and a book titled Lisha Of Meridell exists to help you study up on her journey.)

     5 - Illusen

Participants in the recent Faerie Festival are likely very familiar with Illusen, the Earth Faerie responsible for protecting the forests of Meridell. She provides a place of peace and comfort for Meridell’s citizens while also providing an important source of work: Quests! Illusen provides the opportunity for Neopians to fulfil ingredient fetching tasks, with rewards including Rain Water Shampoo, Cucumber Eye Cream, and the ever-elusive Illusens Staff. Take note, battlers- that staff is a particularly promising weapon! Illusen is celebrated yearly on the 17th of the month of Awakening. Interested in more Illusen reading? Issue 486 of the Neopian Times was dedicated to her!

(A wide variety of Illusen-inspired treats and trinkets exist. Practice your makeup skills on an Illusen Beauty Bust, eat an Illusen Day Doughnut, or dress up in an Illusen Wig. You could try an Illusen Leaf Burrito, if you’re partial to eating… well, leaves.)

     6 - Kayla

Another defender of Meridell, Kayla the Zafara is an alchemist and potion-maker. She’s particularly notable for her defence of Meridell during the Meridell-Darigan wars, wherein she was able to use her knowledge of potions to transform several Turtums into behemoths capable of defending the kingdom. Kayla attributes much of her passion to her idol, Kauvura- a notable inspiration, as seen by the Zafara’s choice of fashion. Nowadays, this hero runs a potion shop in Meridell Castle, offering her wares to Neopians in need.

(A moderate selection of items exist for Neopians who idolize this particular hero. Learn alchemy through Kaylas Chemistry Set, treat illnesses with Kaylas Home Remedy, and dress in Kaylas Magic Cloak- which, of course, pairs perfectly with an I Love Kayla T-shirt.)

     7 - King Skarl

Perhaps you’re familiar with the notoriously grouchy King Skarl, ruler of Meridell. Skarl has led his kingdom through two wars, using both his knowledge and bravery to guide the Champions of Meridell to victory. Outside of his prowess as a tactician, Skarl is well known for his appetite. His portrait in the Gallery of Heroes does not feature King Skarl in a fearsome battle or upon a throne- instead, he can be seen touting a half-eaten turkey leg! You can try out your comedy skills on this grumpy old king in Meridell Castle. If you make him laugh, you might just get a prize!

(A great deal of food has been inspired by Skarl. Feast upon a Chocolate King Skarl, enjoy a King Skarl Mashed Potato Tribute, and treat yourself to an aptly-named Skarl Fruit. Prefer toys? Both the King Skarl Quiguki and the King Skarl Usuki will help satisfy your craving for fun!)

     8 - Psellia

Psellia is, regrettably, something of a mysterious figure. An Air Faerie, Psellia was responsible for saving Jeran after he was thrown from the Darigan Citadel. She was equally instrumental in assisting Meridell during their battles against Lord Kass, helping clear away dark clouds in order to light the way for the knights of Meridell. Notably (though not mentioned in the Gallery of Heroes), Psellia was also a protector of Altador, named The Dreamer by King Altador. Talk about busy- Psellia defended two kingdoms! She’s sometimes called the daughter of the wind and defender of the sky, both very apt titles for this hero.

(Pickings are slim for Psellia fans, though you can enjoy a Chocolate Psellia while playing with your Psellia Doll. The more battle-inclined among us can opt to use Psellias Fighting Fan in the Battledome.)

     9 - Jhuidah

Not to be confused with the less-than-heroic Jhudora, Jhuidah is a faerie that can be found on the tropical coasts of Mystery Island. Jhuidah is sometimes referred to as the “Cooking Pot Faerie”, using her magic to combine mundane objects into magically marvellous creations. Craving a BBQ Porkwich? Provide Jhuidah with Bread and a slice of NeoPox Pizza. Want an Ugga Chair? All this faerie needs is a Checked Kitchen Chair and an Uggatrip. Perhaps her most famous invention is the Everlasting Crystal Apple, the result of combining an Everlasting Apple with Jhudora's Crystal Ball. She’s also frequently associated with the Trading Post, helping to guide Neopians through the wonderful world of trading.

(Perhaps you’d like to trade for a Jhuidah Faerie Doll or a Jhuidah Usuki Doll? If dolls aren’t your style, you can decorate your home with a Jhuidah Cabinet, Jhuidah Chair, or Jhuidah Table. You can even get a Jhuidah Cooking Pot- though it isn’t nearly as magical!)

     10 - The Soup Faerie

Noticing a faerie trend? Faeries are broadly known for their kindness and generosity towards the citizens of Neopia, and the Soup Faerie is no exception. This faerie uses her magic to provide those in need with warm, nourishing soup. If you have less than 3,000 Neopoints to your name, you can visit the Soup Kitchen in the Neopian Marketplace. Enjoy any one of her magical flavours- lamb broth, minestrone, turnip broth, and countless others!

(fans of the Soup Faerie can find some of her recipes in the Soup Faerie Book. If you’re a particular fan, you can pick up a bowl of Soup Faerie Soup from the Faerie Foods shop in Faerie City. You can even get a Stained Glass Soup Faerie Window!)

     11 - Hannah

You’re likely most familiar with Hannah from her recent appearance as the Daily Quests mascot. Before this, though, Hannah was one of the most well-known adventurers in all of Neopia. Her travels brought her from caves of Krawk Island to Terror Mountain to the Lost Desert- all the way to Kreludor! This brave Usul hails from Krawk Island. If you can think of an exploration-based Neopian plot, there’s a very good chance that Hannah was involved in- if not directly responsible for- the associated adventures.

(Bring along a Hannah Flask on your next adventure, alongside your Hannah Lunch Box and your Hannah Plushie. If you’re hungry, enjoy a Hannah Cupcake. Don’t forget to woo your loved ones with the Hannah Valentine Card Set!)

     12 - Master Vex

A bit of a controversial addition to the Gallery of Heroes, Master Vex is most well-known as the warden of the Darigan Citadel dungeons. Master Vex exhibited his heroism when he helped the Yellow Knight escape from the Citadel, enabling the Knight to warn Meridell of their impending peril. Master Vex was one of the few individuals who stood against Lord Kass, preventing a total and catastrophic takeover of the Citadel. If you work your way through the prisoners and guards of the dungeons, you can challenge Master Vex to a game of Cellblock- though it’s worth noting that he hasn’t once lost a game. Good luck!

(Your Mynci can dress up with the Master Vex Mynci clothing set- including the Master Vex Mynci Beard, Pants, Scar, Shirt and Cape, Shoes, and Wig. Any of your Pets can enjoy the Master Vex Puzzle, which is much easier to solve than a game of Cellblock.)

     13 - Galgarroth

Remember when I wrote that Master Vex was one of the FEW individuals who stood against Lord Kass? Galgarroth is the other hero who joined him in this fight. Advisor to Lord Darigan and commander of the Darigan armies, Galgarroth also helped to free the Yellow Knight, helping to defeat the Spectre of Darigan during the first war. His rebellion during the Kass wars was monumental in helping to stop Kass’ power from growing out of control. Without Galgarroth’s bravery, it’s very possible that Meridell might not exist today.

(Only two pieces of Galgarroth merchandise exist in Neopia- a Galgarroth Action Figure and a Galgarroth Plushie. Let’s hope this oft-forgotten hero gets the recognition he deserves in the future!)

     14 - Cylara

Cylara, a young Cybunny, is a perfect example of the power of fate. This otherwise normal Neopian found herself separated from her family on a vacation to the Space Station. When Dr. Sloth made his terrifying return, Cylara stumbled into the company of the brave resistance member Gorix (more on him shortly). The two helped to defeat Dr. Sloth, preventing a total takeover of the Virtupets Space Station- and, perhaps, saving all of Neopia. She’s also one of two stars of the arcade game Moon Rock Rampage, wherein you can attempt to escape Kreludor. Good luck, gamers!

(A Cylara Wig once sold in the NC Mall, offering Neopets the chance to tout this hero’s iconic bangs and pigtails. You can also enjoy reading The Life of Cylara while cuddling up with your Cylara Usuki.)

     15 - Gorix

Gorix the Grundo was no stranger to Dr. Sloth’s evil reign. While Grundos gained independence long ago, the fear of the past never quite left him- nor did it leave his fellow freedom fighters, who kept on their toes to prevent another disaster. When Dr. Sloth returned, Gorix was instrumental in defeating him alongside Cylara, eventually landing on the moon of Kreludor. Brave heroes like Gorix, who fight to preserve freedom, are perhaps some of the most important heroes of all.

(Back in Y20, you could win a Gorix Glass Toy from beating Abigail in Daily Dare. You can also tout a Miniature Gorix Spaceship- the perfect item to complete your Virtupets-inspired outfit!)

     16 - Commander Gormos

Commander Gormos is another controversial addition to the Gallery of Heroes. He was, in fact, the leader of Dr. Sloth’s armies. Without this Kougra, it’s possible that Dr. Sloth wouldn’t have been able to return at all. In a moment of clarity, though, Commander Gormos enabled Gorix and Cylara to flee. This led to the defeat of Dr. Sloth and, in turn, Commander Gormos’ entry into the Gallery of Heroes. This was not without strife; Gormos does not view himself as a hero, and perhaps looks upon his past with shame.

(If you believe that Commander Gormos is indeed a hero, your Kougra can dress in the Commander Goros Kougra set- including Armour, Boots, Cape, and Pants. If you’re in the anti-Gormos camp, you can get yourself a Defaced Portrait of Gormos to decorate your home.)

     17 - King Kelpbeard

A frequently overlooked member of Neopian royalty, King Kelpbeard is the ruler of Maraqua. Old Maraqua tragically was destroyed under his rule, leading King Kelpbeard to become something of a recluse. Who can blame him? His adherence to secrecy and silence is what allowed Maraqua as we know it today to resettle and repopulate. Defending “New Maraqua” from the cruel Captain Scarblade, he is now recognized by many Neopians as a brave and strong ruler.

(If you’ve got the budget, you can bring Kelpbeards Trident into the Battledome. Not that wealthy? You can pick up a King Kelpbeard Balloon or King Kelpbeard Bobblehead for relatively cheap.)

     18 - Swordmaster Talek

Another Maraquan hero, Talek the Draik is the swordmaster of Maraqua. His dedication to the training and maintenance of Maraqua’s army is credited as a major deciding factor in the kingdom’s victory over Captain Scarblade. Without Talek’s knowledge of battle and his proclivity for using Maracite, it’s possible that Maraqua, as we know it today, wouldn’t exist.

(Very little Talek merchandise exists. You can get yourself a Swordmaster Talek Balloon or a Talek Plushie- two inspiring additions to any young Neopian’s toy box. If those aren’t your style, consider getting a Swordmaster Talek Stamp.)

     19 - Garin

Garin is an… interesting addition, to say the least. When you read “Pirate captain who loves treasure”, you don’t necessarily think “heroic”. Garin, though, defies stereotypes. Garin, captain of the Black Pawkeet, is credited for leading his crew in the battle against Captain Scarblade’s own ship. Garin is another example of a brave Usul hero. Nowadays, Garin continues to plunder and sail. We were unable to track him down for an interview- “the high seas” isn’t a very specific address.

(Garins Sword makes a great option for your battle-ready pet’s arsenal, and a Garin Spinning Top is a great way to unwind after a long day of sailing. A Garin Negg also exists, though it’s perhaps a bit uncanny to eat a Negg with your hero’s face on it…)

     20 - Jaques

A member of Garin’s crew, Jacques the Kyrri’s heroism can largely be credited to a Maraquan named Isca. Isca saved Jacques’ life, prompting him to volunteer to defend Maraqua. He played an instrumental role in saving the kingdom, warning King Kelpbeard that Captain Scarblade’s pirates were en route. While saving kingdoms is noble, Jacques spends most of his time-saving Garin. If it weren’t for the Kyrii, Garin would be toast- his wild pirating antics often land the Usul into trouble, which Jacques reliably gets him out of.

(A Jacques Balloon and Jacques Plushie are great options for a pirate-loving young Neopian. You could also get a Jacques Stained Glass Window, though that might be a bit tacky… unless, of course, you live on a pirate ship.)

     21 - General Dacon

General Dacon is the leader of the Sakhmetian army, helping to protect Sakhmet City. Perhaps more excitingly, he’s also the direct guard of the one and only Princess Amira. After the evil King Jazan unleashed hordes of evil onto Sakhmet, Dacon took it upon himself to greatly improve the security of his beloved city- helping to prevent another devastating attack on Sakhmet. He’s perhaps most well-known for his flaming sword, aptly named Blaze.

(There are… absolutely no General Dacon items. What a shame! You ARE able to get your hands on a genuine Blaze, if that’s within your budget. The item was a high-end prize for participants of the Lyra and the Lost Heirloom plot.)

     22 - Nabile

We need some context before discussing this hero. The Desert Scarabs are a group of thieves that are found within Sakhmet. They’re generally a bit of a problem- stealing food, snatching treasures, and bribing guards. Nabile (now Queen Nabile) was a member of this group. She decided to target Prince Jazan, given his wealth. But in a shocking turn of events, Nabile was discovered to be a descendant of Sakhmet royalty! She was wed to Jazan, lifting the curse on Qasala and restoring a great deal of peace to the Lost Desert.

(A Nabile Balloon, Nabile Plushie, and Nabile Stamp are all great additions to your Gallery. Your Pets can also dine on Nabiles Qasalan Delight, a citrusy sweet treat.)

     23 - Tomos

Like Nabile, Tomos was a member of the Desert Scarabs. He was great friends with Nabile, the pair often teaming up on thiefly exploits. He was instrumental in helping Nabile, and thus played a very important role in freeing Qasala from their terrible curse. These days, Tomos has been struggling to find a partner in crime that can match the wit and skill of Nabile. He’s currently accepting applications.

(Two stamps exist bearing Tomos’ likeness- the Tomos Stamp and the Trapped Tomos Stamp. The Tomos Collectors Top was once sold in the NC Mall, perfect for young Neopets who aspire to be… a thief, I guess?)

     24 - Armin

Armin is, in my opinion, the most adorable hero on this list. He’s a sweet little Bori who played a major role in assisting Hannah through her plight through the Ice Caves- and, in fact, is responsible for freeing the Bori race as a whole. It was Armin the Small who delivered the final blow against the fearsome Bringer of Night, freeing Boris in the process. It’s my opinion that “Armin the Brave” is a much more apt name… though Armin the Small isn’t exactly inaccurate.

(Your Pets can cuddle with an Armin Plushie. If you’ve got a Bori, they can dress in the Armin Bori set- including a Dagger, Footwraps, Gloves, and a Shirt and Vest combo. You can also send out a Taelia and Armin Christmas Card- how festive!)

     25 - Judge Hog

Finally, a classic superhero entry! Judge Hog is the leader of the Defenders of Neopia, responsible for protecting Neopia’s citizens from everyday villainy. This Moehog dons a fashionable mask and cape as he stops evil dead in its tracks! While he’s strict about justice, he’s just as willing to encourage young Neopians to engage in their own heroic acts, helping to foster bravery and safety among all of Neopia.

(Judge Hog fans can rest easy knowing they’re able to deck out their rooms with heroic furniture- including a Judge Hog Bean Bag, Bed, Rug, and Poster. Judge Hog Cupcakes are a great addition to any hero-themed birthday party!)

     26 - Hanso

Hanso is yet another notorious thief. Lots of thieves in the Gallery of Heroes, aren’t there? This Ixi was responsible for helping to bring down Xandra, freeing the Faeries of Neopia from being turned to stone. He was, in return, named Master Thief by Queen Fyora herself. Thieves are rarely a celebrated position, but good for him, right? Without Hanso, we wouldn’t have any Faeries at all so perhaps a bit of celebration is in order after all.

(Battledome Pets can bring a Hanso Charisma Charm into the arena, a fairly powerful weapon that’s great for beginner fighters. Young Pets can also bring their lunch to school in a Hanso Lunchbox!)

     27 - Brynn

Full name Captain Brynneth, Brynn once served Brightvale. She had many, many run-ins with Hanso over the years- including on her very first day in the Brightvale army- and ultimately worked with him to defeat Xandra. Nowadays, she works alongside Hanso to help hunt down Faerie artefacts. She currently holds the title of Captain of the Guard under Queen Fyora’s rule. While she still technically holds the same title in Brightvale, she only actively serves in Faerieland.

(Studious Pets can read Brynn A Biography to learn more about this brave captain. Battling Pets can wield Brynn's Legendary Sword of Wraith Smiting, a prize from the Faeries’ Ruin plot. It’s not nearly as highly ranked as the Hanso Charisma Charm, something we’re sure Hanso takes a great deal of pleasure in.)

And… that’s it! Every single entry into the Gallery of Heroes. I sincerely hope that this overview has filled you and your Neopets with bravery, hope, and pride. Neopia is a land full of action and adventure, and these heroes help make sure it’s a safe place for Neopians to enjoy. Here’s to a thousand issues of chronicling the adventures of Neopia- and here’s to a thousand more!
