Mystery Island FAQ

There are some new Items in this set called Totems. How do they work?

You can discard a Totem from your bank to use its special ability. First, you have to bank a Totem the way you would normally bank an Item. Then, while the Totem is in your bank, you can discard it from your bank to do what it says.

When can I discard a Totem from my bank?

Most Totems tell you when you can use their abilities. For example, Wooden Kougra Totem says you can discard it after the dice are rolled for a contest on your turn. Wooden Nimmo Totem doesn't say when you can use it, which means you can use it on the main part of your own turn when nothing else is happening. This means you can't use it until after you've drawn your card for the turn, untapped your Neopets, and flipped over your new Basic Neopet, and there can't be a contest or anything else happening at the time.

There are some new Items in this set called Codestones. How do they work?

You can play a Codestone in a contest just like any other Item. If you win that contest, you don't have to discard the Codestone. Instead, you may attach it to one of your Neopets or Heroes in that contest. If you do, the Codestone becomes an Equipment and stays on that Neopet or Hero permanently.

I have a card that lets me search my deck for an Equipment. Can I get a Codestone?

No. While a Codestone is in your deck, hand, bank, or discard pile, it's an Item, not an Equipment. It's affected by cards that affect Items, but not cards that affect Equipment. While a Codestone is in play attached to a Neopet or Hero, it's an Equipment and not an Item. It's affected by cards that affect Equipment, but not cards that affect Items. After a Codestone stops being attached to a Neopet or Hero, it goes back to being an Item.

Blue Krawk
Neopet | Basic Krawk | Dark
This Neopet gets +5 to all stats while you have a Fire and a Water Neopet in play.

Do I need a Neopet that has both the Fire and Water Faerie types for Blue Krawk to get its bonus?

No. You can have one Neopet with the Fire Faerie type and a different one with the Water Faerie type. If you do have one Neopet with both Faerie types, such as Rainbow Pteri, Blue Krawk still gets its bonus.

Techo Adept
Neopet | Experienced Techo | Light
Before you roll for a contest this Neopet is in, you may have it use the stat of one of its rivals instead of its own. (The stat includes everything except Item bonuses and the die roll.)

When do I decide whether to use this ability?

During a contest, after Items have been played, but before dice have been rolled.

Can Techo Adept use a Villain's stat?

Yes, if it's in a contest against that Villain.

When Techo Adept uses a rival's stat, what does the stat include?

It includes the stat printed on the rival, plus any effects that give a stat bonus to that rival. This includes Equipment attached to that rival and other abilities (like Faerie Pancakes). It does not include effects that give a stat bonus to the contest, like Mutant Grundo or the Item your opponent played in the contest. Note that Techo Adept's stat doesn't change -- it just uses a different one.

Jhuidah
Hero | Faerie | Water
To play this, tap one of your Water Neopets.
When you play this card, you choose a card in your opponent's bank, and he or she chooses a card in your bank. Exchange those cards. (Don't do any effects that happen when these cards are banked.)

How long does the exchange last?

Until the end of the game. When the game ends, if you still have any cards owned by your opponent, you have to give them back. During the game, if a card owned by your opponent would move from your bank to your hand, discard pile, or deck, it moves to your opponent's hand, discard pile, or deck instead.

Potgatkerchi
Villain | Earth
To play this, you need an Earth Neopet.
This Villain's strength is equal to the total strength of all Neopets in play that aren't in this Villain's arena. Figure out each of its other stats the same way.
When this Villain loses a contest, untap all of its rivals.

How do I figure out this Villain's strength?

First, figure out the strength of each Neopet in each of the other arenas. A Neopet's strength is the strength stat printed on it, plus any effects that give it a stat bonus to strength. This includes Equipment attached to it and other abilities (like Faerie Pancakes). It does not include effects that give a stat bonus to a contest, like Buzz Bully or an Item played in a contest. Add up all of those strength stats. Potgatkerchi's strength stat is equal to that number. Potgatkerchi's other stats work the same way. Whenever a Neopet moves into Potgatkerchi's arena, moves out of it, enters play, leaves play, or has its stat modified, Potgatkerchi's stats will change.

Snotbunny
Equipment | Petpet | Dark
To play this, tap one of your Dark Neopets.
When this Petpet is discarded from play, your opponent discards a card at random from his or her hand.

This card is attached to one of my Neopets. I trade in that Neopet, so Snotbunny is discarded. Does my opponent have to discard a card from his or her hand?

Yes. Snotbunny makes your opponent discard a card from his or her hand when it is discarded from play, even if you cause Snotbunny to be discarded.

Fumpu Leaf Medallion
Equipment | Charm
To play this, tap one of your Neopets.
When you win a contest this Neopet or Hero is in by 5 or more, untap it.

This card is attached to one of my Neopets. I win a contest that Neopet is in by rolling a 6. What happens?

Even though you win the contest automatically, you still check the contest totals to see if you get to untap your Neopet.

Ring of Weightlessness
Equipment | Ring
To play this, tap one of your Neopets.
When this Neopet or Hero loses a contest, your opponent may move it to an arena of his or her choice.

When the Neopet or Hero that Ring of Weightlessness is attached to loses a contest, which card does my opponent get to move to a new arena, Ring of Weightlessness or the Neopet or Hero?

Your opponent gets to move the Neopet or Hero. The Ring stays attached to it and will move as well.

Island Paint Brush
Item | Paint Brush
When a contest starts, if this card is in your bank, you may discard it to choose one of your Basic Neopets in that contest and replace it with an Experienced Neopet of the same species from your deck. Then shuffle your deck.

How do I replace a Neopet with a card from my deck? What if I don't have the right Experienced Neopet in my deck?

When a contest starts, you can discard Island Paint Brush from your bank. If you do, look through your deck for an Experienced Neopet that's the same species as one of your Neopets in that contest. If you find one, replace that Basic Neopet with that Experienced Neopet directly from your deck. (It doesn't go to your hand first.) If you don't find an Experienced Neopet of the right species, nothing happens. Either way, you don't get your Island Paint Brush back -- you've discarded it.

Salvaged Goods
Something Has Happened | Air
To play this, you need an Air Neopet.
When you win a contest in which you played an Item this turn, you may return that Item to your hand instead of discarding it.

What happens if I play this card after a contest I played an Item in?

Nothing. You don't get that Item back. For Salvaged Goods to do anything, you have to play it before a contest you play an Item in.
Remember that you can't play Salvaged Goods in the middle of a contest. Since it's a Something Has Happened card that doesn't say specifically when to play it, you can only play it during the main part of your own turn: after you've drawn your card for the turn, untapped your Neopets, and flipped over your new Basic Neopet. There can't be a contest or anything else happening at the time.
Note that Salvaged Goods affects every contest that happens on the same turn after you play it, not just the next one.

Tiki Party
Something Has Happened | Fire
To play this, you need a Fire Neopet.
Choose an arena where your opponent has at least one Neopet. Untap all of your Neopets and Heroes there. You may start an extra contest there this turn.

I play Tiki Party. Do I have to start the extra contest right away?

No. You untap your Neopets in the arena you chose right away, but you can start the extra contest there at any time during the rest of your turn. You can still start the extra contest there if your opponent's Neopet has moved away from that arena by then.

I play 2 copies of Tiki Party and choose the same arena for both. Do I get to start 3 contests there this turn?

Yes.

Footprints
Something Has Happened | Light
To play this, you need a Light Neopet.
Play this when your opponent moves one of his or her Neopets to an arena. Move one of your Neopets to that arena.

When can I play Footprints?

You can play it when your opponent moves one of his or her Neopets to a new arena, whether that player chooses to move it or a card tells that player to move it. You can play it when your opponent taps a Neopet to move it to a new arena, moves a Neopet that says it doesn't tap to move (like Poogle Racer), or uses the ability of a card like Chocolate Korbats. Note that the other card has to say your opponent moves the Neopet. If another card says that you move his or her Neopet, Footprints won't work.
