Dance of the Koi

The sun doth rise in eager light
ne'er but once a year,
To watch a vision of pure delight;
The dancing Koi performance here.

Rainbow light reflected
Off colour-covered scales,
Freely flowing fins
And softly swishing tails.

Dancing on the wave tops,
Singing to the seas,
Skillfully they twirl and loop,
A spectacle to please.

Spectators stare in wonder,
Eyes open wide as doors,
Gathering in their hundreds
'Round open ocean shores.

So special, rare, and wondrous
It is to see this sight,
The Koi won't dance for anyone
'Cept on this special night.

From dawning's amber waking
Till 'neath an opal moon,
The Koi will show but once a year
To dance on ebbing dunes.

Karpoh the Koi Adventurer

Deep in the gloom of ancient Maraqua,
Where silence drops slowly in,
Where treasure gleams in hidden chests,
Where bubbles catch the flick of a fin...

Karpoh the Koi swims swiftly on,
Searching in the ruins old,
Searching amid the rocks and clams,
Searching for that elusive gold.

A chain waves softly on the lid of a chest,
Rising upward like a fountain,
Rising toward the pirate ship,
Rising toward his captain.

But to reach that chest he must be quick,
Hiding from the eyes of the rangers,
Hiding behind the rows of bubbles,
Hiding to escape the dangers.

And then he notices something strange;
Gone are the spirits who haunt him!
Gone are the red, fierce Jetsams,
Gone are the dark fish who taunt him!

Confused, he emerges from his hiding place,
And faces the mystery of the dark.
He faces the void in wonderment, then
He's face to face with a shark!

He flails against the rocks in fear,
But the shark merely offers a toy.
"Let's take a break today, little one,
For it's the Day of the Koi!"

Faerie Fins

Pensive shimmer, silent sheen,
Soft glow beneath the glossy green.
Reflected colour, most serene,
Silken fins, a soft glimpse seen.

Solitary wave begins,
With velvet shift of faerie fins.

Koi meditate within the pool,
Each winged creature, resplendent jewel.
Adrift in cobalt, soft and cool,
An aqua kingdom, theirs to rule.

Solitary wave begins,
With velvet shift of faerie fins.

Slow the dance of Koi ballet,
Instinctive grace, each idle sway.
Like fragile fans the fins shall splay,
Enchanting, secret, soft display.

Solitary wave begins,
With velvet shift of faerie fins.

No ripple breaks the glassy blue,
Each fin will fan, but not break through.
Dancing sheaths, transparent hue,
Graced by the sheen of water's dew.

Solitary wave begins,
With velvet shift of faerie fins.

Tranquil waters softly flow,
With Koi in ballet, just below.
Colours pastel, forms aglow,
Conveying secrets they all know.

Koi of the Deep

A Koi drifts deep beneath the waves.
It lurks in darkest seaweed bed.
Shadows cross its scaly fins;
Two glowing eyes betray its head.

Unlike its kin, so full of grace,
This Koi is dangerous and strong.
His beauty is a sweet disguise.
His smile is wide; his teeth are long.

He never speaks, he says no words.
Alone, no friends does this Koi keep.
Instead, he lives in empty caves,
And haunts the waters of the deep.

Like wraith of pet that once had lived,
Now he is ghostly, pale, and gaunt.
Unlike his species, he doth hide.
No shine or beauty does he flaunt.

The Koi drifts to and fro in shade,
No company in depths of blue.
Days pass without a word or smile.
He swims alone, yet strong and true.
