Patents of Neopia #1

by one_headlight

--------

In this series, we will be taking a look at various patents granted throughout Neopian history. What is a patent you ask? A patent is a type of intellectual property right granted by the Neopian Patent Office (NPO) to inventors of something new, useful, and non-obvious. A granted patent by the NPO allows the inventor the exclusive rights to make, use, and sell their invention in Neopia for a specified period of time (typically 20 years). Each patent includes a set of claims which technically define the invention that is being protected. The claims typically contain an independent (main) claim(s) and multiple dependent (sub) claims which further define the independent claim(s). The NPO examines each set of claims in a patent application to determine whether or not the claims are drawn towards a novel invention. Comparisons of the claims to the prior art are considered, and if no match has been found or determined to be obvious variants, then a patent is granted. These claims in a granted patent are what prevents others from copying your invention! As such, we will be focusing on the claims of each patent presented.

In this issue, we will be looking at the patents behind a couple of legendary items. These patents allowed the inventors exclusive rights to sell these items at the Hidden Tower!
