As the dirty dishes piled up, Truggdon the Grundo towered over
the sink and looked at all the slippery slime in the murky dish water. He sighed and wiped
the sweat off his large forehead with his stained apron. It was going to be another long night
of scrubbing caked on Spicy Chicken Curry and Duck Pate With Wild Rice off the pots and pans
and plates and forks, but luckily he had enough elbow grease to last him through the late
hours...

..."I might as well get right to it," Truggdon decided. "The longer I wait the harder the job
will be, and the longer I'll be here tonight, which I possibly can't do since I have a date tonight."
So he rolled up his sleeves and set about the task of washing the dishes. By the time he got
the 1,232nd platter done, Truggdon's mood had dampened with self-pity. "Why did I ever think
that being a dishwasher would be a good way to make a living?" As he sunk deeper and deeper
into self-pity, he paid less and less attention to the job at hand, until, when he looked up
two hours later, he realised that although he had finished the pile of dishes, none of dishes
in the huge pile were actually clean. It was at that moment that his boss, the owner of The
Grundo Chef's Restaurant walked in. "Hey, Truggdon, are you almost done? We're about to close
up." When he saw the mountainous pile of dirty dishes and pots, he paused for a moment, then
opened his mouth...

..."Truggdon, I thought I hired you to work! Not to daydream and dawdle!!! Tomorrow is a
very important day. Do you know what that day is, Truggdon?"
"Um, no sir, what day is it?" Truggdon replied.
"That day is the day that we have our annual 50 NP sale, and our customers won't want to
eat their food on dirty dishes or stick dirty forks and spoons in their mouths."
"Yes, sir," Truggdon replied gloomily. So he set continued to scrub away but as soon as
he finished he realised that it had already been another two hours and he missed his date
with Grundila! He knew she was going to be very upset, so he went by her house and tried to
explain what had happened, that he had to wash dishes all night and didn't realise what
time it was and that he was very very sorry. But she didn't understand...

..."I don't understand what's so important about that crummy job! You'd rather spend hours
washing dishes than me? Fine! Go scrub plates and bowls, I never want to speak to you again!"
she shouted before slamming the door in Truggdon's face.
Truggdon walked home after one of his worst days ever. He looked at his watch covered in slime.
He sighed as he saw he would only have four hours of sleep before he would have to go to work
again. Then he remembered the 50 NP sale! It's going to be extra busy at the restaurant. After
cooking, imagine all the dishes he would have to clean!
Truggdon wasn't paying attention to where he was going because he was so tired. When he looked
up he saw that he was...

...standing in the middle of an alleyway, the sun setting at his back and the lamppost lights
humming in his ears. His eyes drifted to the sky, where clouds were gathering ominously.
"C'mon," he pleaded with no-one. "I have to get to The Grundo Chef's Restaurant!"
In response to his begging the skies naught but darkened further, and Truggdon felt a warm
wetness on his cheeks. Tenderly, he touched a hand to his face to find tears of self-pity?
of sadness? of hopelessness? He knew not.
A distant clash of thunder snapped him from his trance, and as raindrops fell around him he
took off at a run to nowhere in particular; to anyplace that wasn't where he was.
The rain grew harder and dampened his clothing as well as his spirit, and each footfall jolted
pain through his fatigued body. As the blind panic and anger subsided and the red mist faded
from his eyes, his pace slowed to a tired walk and finally stopped all together. He leaned
against a flickering lamppost and slid down.
"You lost?" asked a calm female voice.
Truggdon, surprised at any sign of life, looked up to see...

...a miniature version of himself. "W-who are you?" he asked, a slight tremble in his voice.
"I'm your inner voice," she replied, "the one you never listen to."
Truggdon slid hopelessly into a sitting position. "Why should I listen to you anyway?" he asked.
His inner voice's eyes glared, "if you did listen to me, you wouldn't be here now."
Truggdon silently agreed but he still didn't how calm his inner voice was. It was sort of
spooky--that steady voice, female nonetheless. His inner voice drawled on and on what he
should have done. Truggdon brushed her impatiently aside and continued walking wherever his
feet lead him. The sun began to rise; the valleys and hills were touched with the golden rays
of the sun. The deepest corners brightened up, but Truggdon's feelings were as dark as the
night before. When he finally did look up, he was surprised to find himself walking to work.
A jolt of lightning went thought his mind. "Oh, no!" he thought. "Today's the 50 NP sale and
I'm late!" He rushed up the stone steps to find the owner of Grundo's Chef waiting already
on the steps looking down at him with hard cold eyes. Truggdon hurriedly tried to explain...

..."Really, Sir, I lost track of the time... I'm having a hard week... lost my date... made
contact with my inner voice... you understand, don't you?"
The owner made no reply. He was staring at Truggdon like a piece of rotten meat, trying to
decide what do with him.
So Truggdon tried again: "Please, sir? Take a little from my salary! Anything! I NEED this job!
Please sir! Please?"
The owner said two words before spinning on his back heel into the restaurant and slamming
the door: "You're fired."
Slumping, Truggdon walked through the bare streets; feeling like no one in the world gave a
care what happened to him. Truggdon sighed, and then thought, "What ever happened to my
inner voice?"
Suddenly there was another flash of light and the mini-Truggdon, his inner voice appeared in
front of him.
"So, little one, got any suggestions?" Truggdon asked?
The reply was in the inner voice's normal girlish, squeaky voice: "Go back to Grundila... she
is the key to your problems..."

..."More like the cause of my problems..." Truggdon murmured.
"Hey," said his inner voice, "do you want your problems solved or would you rather
mope around town for the rest of your life with no job, no money, and no girlfriend?"
"All right, all right, I'll go," said Truggdon and he turned around and started to slowly make
his way back to Grundila's house. All along the way questions kept circling in his mind, 'How
is Grundila the key?', 'What will she say when I show up again', 'Will she think I'm crazy when
I explain about my inner voice', and mostly, 'Why is my inner voice a girl?' Before he knew
it, Truggdon had arrived and Grundila's house. He climbed to stairs and was about to knock
on the door, when suddenly he heard another voice, a quite familiar voice...

...His mother? "Truggdon I've told you a MILLION times, that girl Grundila is no good
for you! And here I find you standing in front of her house?" She grabbed his arm. "Come on,
my boy, we need to have a little chat." She tried to drag him away from the fancy stucco house.
"Mum, I like her!" Truggdon protested.
"No, you DON'T! You need a smart woman in your life, some one like-" she paused and put a hand
to her chest. "Me."
Once they were deep in the heart of the Neopia, Truggdon's mother pulled him into an alleyway.
Then she began to tug at the bottom of her neck. To Truggdon's horror, her whole head came off
in one piece.
"Wha...???" Truggdon opened his mouth in shock as he looked into the face of... His old boss?
That was when he fainted...

...When he finaly awoke he didn't know what had happened.
His old boss was leaning over him and was looking very glad to see that he was awake.
"I'm so glad that I caught you in time!" his old boss said, "Grundila was going to
kidnap you. She always has been trying to. And your inner voice is on it's way now.
She isn't your inner voice at all, she's helping Grundila kidnap you so they can get
ransom money."
Truggdon wasn't quite getting all this so he said, "Are you sure she always seemed so
nice and I loved her..."
"Yes, I'm sure," his old boss replied.
"But how'd you find out? I mean I didn't even know."
"Well there's no time to explain that now we've got to make a run for it."
"What's our plan?" asked Truggdon.
The two whispered together and came up with a great plan while they were jogging to Truggdon's
old work. When they got there, since the restaurant wasn't open yet there weren't any people,
they put their plan into action.
"We need all these things.... Rope, soap, and marbles," Truggdon's old boss replied.
"Okay, got all of the things that we need, let's head out..."

when they headed out the door, Truggdon's inner voice and Grundila were standing in front of
the door.
"How nice to see you, come here my darling," said Grundila.
"No, you guys tricked me into this and now you're planning to kidnap me right?" asked Truggdon.
"Why are you listening to your boss? Do you know that he is tricking you? Why? I'm your girlfriend! Don't you even trust your girlfriend? Trust me, your boss is lying, trying to trick you so you won't be able to talk or see me again!" yelled Grundila
"Yea right Grundila, you tricked me, and by the way, I don't trust you," Truggdon said.
"Your boss is really trying to trick you, trust me, I'm not lying!" yelled Grundila.
"Are you telling the truth?" asked Truggdon.
"Yes I am!"
"Boss, you tricked me!" shouted Truggdon.
"Don't listen to her!" yelled Truggdon's boss.
Grundila and Truggdon's inner voice just glared at the Boss, all of a sudden,
Truggdon's inner voice eyes went red. The glow turned into a beam and went right into
Truggdon's boss's eyes.
"You're right Truggdon, I did trick you."
"Come on Truggdon, let's go home," said Grundila.
"Ok, don't you want to go to my house for dinner?" asked Truggdon.
"I can't, my mom is taking me to the mall," replied Grundila.
"Oh," replied Truggdon.
When they went to the car, his inner voice made Truggdon to sit in the back on the middle seat.
And that's when it happened; Ropes shot right out and tied Truggdon up.
"Ha, ha, ha," laughed the two Meercas. "Now you won't be able to see your girlfriend ever
again!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"
The two evil Meercas took Truggdon to an abandoned house and tied him up, after a
few days, they turned him into a slave and had to work every minute or else he'll get
locked in a dungeon with witches and Nimmos. Two years passed until one day... there
was a knock on the door. Truggdon answered it and there standing in front of him was
his real girlfriend.
"Are you Grundila?" asked Truggdon.
"Yes," replied his girlfriend.
"Come on, let's go, those two brats are in the kitchen, hurry up and go home!" whispered
Grundila.
So that's how he escaped. Truggdon and Grundila had fun after he escaped. A week after,
the newspaper arrived, and Truggdon's picture was in it! It said: How Mr. Truggdon escaped,
and how the police arrested the evil Meercas! They went to jail and will never be
released until Truggdon said they could. Thanks to his girlfriend! We have a new hero! And
that was the story of Truggdon the hero!
The End
